DF Suggestions / Should Toady One include mods?
« on: April 20, 2011, 06:02:43 pm »
There are a few little mods floating around that add neat little benefits to the game, such as the display case mod and the bonfire workshop mod. These already work fairly well and would not affect most gameplay much.

Should Toady One include such mods in vanilla DF? Why or why not? If so, what mods should be added?
EDIT: Huh, you can't select "yes" more than once. That didn't end up like I hoped it would. Ah, well. If you disagree, choose the two "no's" that you agree with most, and anyone reviewing the polls should keep the greater number of nos in mind.

Is:

WWWWWWW
WFFFFFFFFW
WFFFFFFFFW
WFFFFFFFFW
WWWWWWW

airtight or do I have to build a floor tile (F) over each of the wall tiles (W, one z-level level down)?

FFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFF

You do not need to build floor on top of walls to seal out rocs.

Possibly. Dwarves can detect unowned socks across the map, but not a goblin ambush before it kills the first dwarf and makes his socks un-owned.
Why is it always socks?

Most annoying thing? Building. I hate how it auto-selects the closest item. I try and make a granite wall, yet it auto chooses bauxite. Repeat repeat repeat repeat GAAAAH
Don't hit enter twice.

They are otherworldly beings, being immune to all of the petty concerns of mortal beings. So maybe they just wanted a vacation. Slaughtering entire armies of mere dwarves and elves takes a lot out of a soldier; I'd want some R&R after a while, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Armor Equip Limit (In-depth Question)
« on: April 19, 2011, 05:49:22 pm »
I believe it is considered a robe for that purpose.  In the same way, an iron bed is still a bed, even though iron can't be made into a bed under normal circumstances.

Hopefully that one guy who seems to know everything about the way the game is coded will see this thread, though.
lol

Yeah, I figured that would be the case, which I was hoping for. I'm having issues right now with my guy actually putting the armor on properly. I'm currently stuck in a terrible equip loop where he keeps dropping his plate, then picking up some chain, then walking over to the meeting hall, then going to drop his mail, then picking up the plate, then etc., etc., etc.

It's really kind of stupid.
Emphasis mine.
You're playing DWARF fortress, dirty foot.

Hmmm... you know. Water freezes. Could this be weaponized?
Yes. It has been done.
Of course, everything's been weaponized, so...

After getting his foot cut off in a battle against a lion, losing his wife to a lion (connection), and being drafted to (fail to) kill said lion, a potter has gone insane.
He is "Crawling around babbling!"

It's this attention to detail that makes me love DF. Among other things.

It does reflect real life somewhat, but trees also survive being completely submerged in magma, and that does not happen too often in real life  8)
Trees also don't get submerged in magma very often...

DF Modding / Make creatures self-fertilising?
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:44:34 pm »
If you add the [MALE] and [FEMALE] tags to one creature/caste, will it fertilize itself/its eggs or what?

[geekytrivia](Don't laugh; in addition to creatures that reproduce by mitosis, there are creatures who reproduce by fission, budding, and even some reptiles and other creatures who can lay fertilized eggs without a male being present-at least one species of lizard is composed entirely of females, reproducing asexually in this manner. So while they aren't male and female, they do reproduce without another creature's presence. This would be a sensible reproduction strategy for sea serpents, cave dragons, and other rare beasties.)[/geekytrivia]

If a civ is composed of such creatures, how does marriage and birth work? Also, are creatures that are both male and female reffered to as he, she, or it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Two somewhat related questions
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:29:04 pm »
AFAIK, once a dwarf takes a lover (prerequisite for marriage) they are monogamous for life.  They will never remarry, they will never take a new lover.  Dwarfs will never "get over it".  You can confine the 2 dwarfs in question to a 1-tile burrow, with all labors turned off.  Or make a bedroom with 2 beds, and assign overlapping rooms from both beds.  Or lock them in a room with food and booze and no one else for company.  But if one of them is already married, they will never be more than just friends.

...Magma it is.

Bucket brigade, Hyndis already explained it.
How do you get them to dump water closer to the map edges than constructed walls are allow...oh.
Can you do it in a a flat biomes without a lot of channeling? Or at all?
Bridges probably

Yes, bridges or floors if you want. But really I just let my dwarves stand on the icewall they just created. Go to a tundra/glacier and build an upstair+downstair anywhere. Now make a long 1 by whatever pond zone starting from that stairway you just made. They'll make an icewall next to your stairs, and then after that will use the icewall to stand on and dump the water for the next section and so on. You don't actually have to construct anything on the map edges.
You DO, however, have to find a large source of liquid water that can be accessed from a glacier bi...oh, wait, caverns. Duh.
