Oh, and just making sure... does anybody have any sort of gender or personality trait or prefstring preferences for "their" dwarves in this before I actually hit the commit button?

I can keep aborting until the starting seven have traits people are happy with.  Migrants would take some annoying savescumminess, but it's theoretically possible, if we get enough migrants, to just hit upon some dwarves with the right traits.
If it's not too late, and if my position as leader noble isn't going to be migrated, I'd like the dwarf with the most manageable tastes.
If my dorf is being migrated, then I'd still like him (or her-I don't care, no difference) to have the most manageable mandates and demands you can spare from a dwarf.

As to the poll: Dwarves are the greatest nuisance to a fort. When they're smart, they're great, but who ever heard of a smart dwarf?

But what happened to the Gibbon?!
It got killed by one of the critters before the Badgerman got there.

At this point it's my firm belief that bronze colossi are invincible in the arena mode against adamantine 90% of the time. Unless  you get lucky or use a tonne of archers.
The only thing I can find that routinely kills bronze colossi is another bronze colossus, and even that takes a while.

DF Suggestions / More non-metal weapons
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:31:23 pm »
I can imagine dwarves, lacking access to metal or fuel, making stone maces or bone spears or something.
Now that metals are rare, wooden training spears, axes, and swords backed up with crossbows firing wooden or bone bolts just won't really cut it, since there is no "just wait until you hit hematite." If you're really unlucky, you might end up with nothing but gold, platinum, and cobalite, and not even be able to make copper hammers or whatever on your own.
Maybe it's trying to make trading more useful, but if stone or bone weapons were less effective than metal ones (not unrealistic), then there would still be about as much pressure to trade -gold goblet-s for steel bars or *cobalite mug*s for iron maces or whatever...but the player could survive sieges until then without simply sealing out the invaders, leaving you as helpless as a tortoise hiding in its shell, waiting for the eagle to go away. Or whatever.
In fact, not only that, but as a side benefit, it would give maces purpose! They're what you use until you get a decent military and can afford <<+silver warhammer+>>s.

What do you think? Good idea or bad idea?

If you want a reaction to make wooden nest boxes:

[PRODUCT:100:1:ITEM_TOOL:ITEM_TOOL_NEST_BOX:PLANT_MAT:{TREE ID here, such as "FEATHER"}:WOOD]
I seem to have done pretty well.
First reaction! Whoo!

NEVER assume dwarves will act intelligent. If you leave a random chunk of outdoors, as in undefended area, "indoors" by digging into a mountainside mineral deposit or building a ceiling or something, expect that outdoor dwarves will go there. If the dumb dwarf isn't going to such an area...and neither is his family...Sounds like Toady put in genetic stupidity!

So...No one knows how to stop people from eating their own eggs?

I'm not sure I understand what is going on? Did you mod giant eagles as fortress race and now they are picking up and eating their own eggs from the nest boxes?
Oops, no. I modded in another race, which lays eggs, and I heard reports of egg-laying races eating their own eggs, so I wanted to know how to fix that before I had to deal with it. Maybe it's been fixed in 31.25?
The giant eagles are just tame.
Guess a low-info question is confusing... :-[

Forbidding the eggs should do. Also remove them from food stockipiles and disallow cooking. Afaik, a sentinent female egg layer needs to be married for something to hatch out.
Excellent!

DF General Discussion / Arena Awesomeness

I made a badger man in the arena. Grand master swordsman, swimmer, armor and shield user, and a few other skills. All-bluestuff gear except for a silver shield.

Tore through normal critters easy, even an elephant. Then a dragon. Then...a bronze colossus.
The giant knocked me (badger man) into some water I'd set up lower down, where I had had some skeletal cave fish men against a carp, a cave crocodile, and a bull shark, all also against a gibbon that someone had previously knocked down there.
I survived all of this, losing one paw only. After a while of hitting the B.C, I got bored and let the arena take its course.
After a bit, the BC had several wounds, but the badger man had healed all of his except the foot.

A bit later, the bronze colossus was fleeing the badger man.

I have had an awesome arena fight.

EDIT: Now they're fighting. Neither can seem to land a blow.
EDITEDIT: The BC strangled the Bm until the latter suffocated.  :'( :'(
It took eight pages of combat,  of the bronze colossus strangling the badgerman's throat and tearing apart the hair.

DF Modding / Trying to mod in a free nestbox reaction
« on: April 13, 2011, 07:20:40 pm »
Without going into details, I want to create a reaction that creates a nest box for free.
Being a minor modder, I am slightly boggled on how to do this.
I think I understand most of it, but...here's the product line as I have it now. As soon as I decide what material I want to make it out of, I'll add the RAW name for that.
[PRODUCT:100:1:ITEM_TOOL:ITEM_TOOL_NEST_BOX:{MATERIAL}]
Do I need anything else? Aside from an idea of what to make it out of, of course. (In case you want to make suggestions, the nest box is for giant eagles.)
EDIT: And how would I make it out of feather wood, or some other kind of wood?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Two questions

Alright, one of these involves a little modding, but I already did all of it and when I asked on the modding forum the response was MORE modding, which I don't feel ready to do.
First question, is there any easy way to prevent an egg-laying race from eating its own eggs?
Second, what, in your opinion, is the coolest and/or best not-cotton-candy-or-undiggable material to make a giant eagle nestbox out of?

54972
yeah, you need to designate. designate EVERYTHING.

Your topics so far seem to imply you're not doing enough micromanagement. Do not expect a dwarf to do anything you don't tell it to do in very clear terms, and then only expect them to do as you ask maybe 30-50% of the time.
Actually, they always do what you tell them to do, they just do it wrong 30-50% of the time if they can.

They also do all sorts of things without you telling them to-eat, drink, sleep, complain, take breaks, throw parties, throw tantrums, make mandates, kill legendary dwarves for not fulfilling mandates, go into moods, go insane when you can't find silk or whatever, run from insane dwarves, get killed by goblins, tantrum some more, get killed by the mlitia for attacking another dwarf, get emo over their friends' deaths...

This.

Although, after four pages, it's possible that no one is still on the original topic.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is this...normal? (Spoilers)
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:39:13 pm »
Perfectly ordinary. Even before you discover the various underground layers, creatures can wander in from the map edges on those layers. There's usually one group of animals on each of the 6 layers (surface and 5 underground). You're just seeing some wandering monsters from the bottommost layer trying to path someplace they can't go. Nothing to worry about; wandering carnival monsters don't even seek to swarm you like the ones that are spawned when you breach a HFStone tube.
A.) Ah. I wonder what they're pathing to.
B.) Spoilers, demons, hell, and you still find it necessary to refer to adamantine as "HFStone"? Some people refer to it without spoilers even! Why does secrecy matter so much to you?
