DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sieges & Floor Hatches
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:37:06 pm »
I think something in Siege AI is broken sometimes.

This may be intended siege behaviour.

Traditional (successful) sieges through history mean making a blockade around a fortification, until the inhabitants die of starvation, disease, or surrender.
Even if the gate is wide open, you wouldn't charge, because the defender has the advantage.
"Attacking" was typically more along the lines of taking pot-shots, slinging diseased animals & bodies over the walls, and the like.
Full assault was only done due to other mitigating factors (attacker running out of supply, time requirements, concern about reinforcements, show of force, politics).
A smart sieger knows that you win by forcing the defender to come attack you.

So, really, the Goblins are acting like smarter siegers.

Would be nice if they take tribute, or have other diplomatic options which I'm sure are coming in the Military Arc.
Until then, it would be nice if they were more aggressive attackers again, please, Toady.
Or, y'know, add more siege-ey things like flinging dead bodies into forts or setting things on fire or...
Actually, unless they get inside, they couldn't do that to most dwarven forts.  :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Giant axe or serrated disk

My weapon traps usually have one rotating disc, one axe blade and one set of spiked balls each. I like to hedge my bets.
No, THREE of each. And a training spear for irony. If irony means "like iron," that statement is even more ironic!...in a human's sense of the word.
Also, this forum needs a better stealth color.

Yes, anything with functioning eyes will do.
But kittens are the best choice, I assume?
I suggest Russian bears. Unicycles make things much more fun.
Oooh. He's good.

You forget something:

Yes, anything with functioning eyes will do.
But kittens are the best choice, I assume?

Ah I see you're new to DF. See, nothing can be "the best" until you add a substantial amount of magma. I suggest flaming kittens.

Next, make a mangrove.
You'll need a big ocean embark...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most insane forgotten beast incident?
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:14:38 pm »
Granite quadraped with a dust attack that caused lung rot tore into my cavern dwelling fortress. Many died, some hid behind a forbidden, locked artifact door, safely inside.  Then a moody dwarf walked through it, into the cavern, and others pathed through it, and dropped glass bricks in the doorway, and it ate them all. the end.
...Doors can eat dwarves now?

Actually, it was mostly tallow. Not sure if there was any meat at all.

And, of course, it's called "forgotten beast foodstuff"...

...I never even got a human diplomat.
I...I really don't blame him.

feathered wtfbeast
No, that's "feathered wildebeest."

In one of my first forts while i was paranoid about caves i trapped iron humanoid with poisonous gas and 2 other forgotten beasts (between bridges in channeled hole). Fleshy beasts were happily rotting from gas for years until i had magma flooding accident. It burned bridges bounding  forgotten beasts, fleshy ones burned and iron thing just stayed in channeled hole in magma not trying to get out.
How is this an "accident?"

Sadly (?) I have never had an interesting FB incident.

Seriously tho, why not just mod cats not to be pets?

Er-Est
This, once again.
Ee-dee-uht.
This also has metaphorical merit.

« on: April 04, 2011, 05:10:33 pm »
BTW do you mean conga-lining badger men, or the horrible Giant Badger boar/sow?
etc
Badger...
Men?
And I thought conchmen sounded strange...
(On an aside, do badger-men like mushroom-men and are afraid of snake-men? And, regardless of those answers, did anyone get the reference?)

Did the Yak land on the camel?

That's probally it, but it doesn't matter, the yak's already faint from starvation.
Also...WATERfall. Drowney.

I would actually be more interested in seeing a Brit or Australian trying to transcribe an American accent. I feel like I'm transcribing my (lack of an) accent right now, even though an Englishman or somethingone would likely disagree.

Dear Urist McCarpenter,
Please do not go on break. We need you to build those floors and walls and such.

Dear Urist McFisher,
Please do not go on break. We need you to build those floors and walls and such since the normal carpenter is on break. You're the only one left who does nothing useful and is not on break.
P.S. If you get relieved from carpentry duty, and start to fish, actually catch something. There has been nonstop fish or whales in the ocean since a few days after we arrived.

Dear Urist McButcher,
Butcher the rotten corpse without complaining or don't dawdle so much in constructing the butcher's shop (finally) and butchering the beachfall. Ugh.

There are...problems with this.
You have to carve it out of natural rock-constructed walls and floors crumble. Even cast obsidian or somesuch will discover chunks of it destroyed or melted if it hits SMR.
If you have it closed-topped, it will likely squish your dwarves. If open-topped, magma displaced on top will drown and burn them.
I can't think of how to do it in DF.

When you consider it, having some aquifer/river and the magma sea...

INFINITE OBSIDIAN

You can construct your 2000 z-level tower now. Dwarfmade space elevator, to show that you don't have to rely on adamantine-based bugs? Heck yes.
If you mod the game to have 2000+ z-levels of empty space above ground...

Wow, tons of good ideas!

Decided to give a Goblin a Hug recently.
Why else would civilians stay outside during a siege? They're hoping to find some nice goblin wrestlers!

http://img41.imageshack.us/i/fsdfr.png/ This is a link to a picture of the flying stone. I am playing in .25 with a save that has been around since .18.

There appears to be a floor and a staircase supporting it. Things can be supported from above. Like disco balls.
