DF Gameplay Questions / Terrified Animals

Okay, this is hilarious.

I embarked on a cave. A draltha wandered out. No biggie, because it gets spooked and runs when it comes close to my...well, kobolds. The hilarious part is that it keeps trying to come up to my fort, then running away...and that it and a fox TERRIFIED EACH OTHER. Hilarious.

Is this supposed to happen?

I think my first death was when I decided to train up swimming but stepped into "open space"...It ended badly.

Not much you can do except for assigning them all to a military squad that requires them to put on clothes.

31.18

How do I get my woodcutters to take their axes into combat?

Alright... after reading all of that, I'm feeling vaguely inspired.

Requesting a dwarfing, and sign me up for a turn. :)
Are you sure? The current life expectancy of any given dwarf is about... uh... well, just think: there are thirty insane midgets stuck in a fucking tomb with skeletal horses above them and four forgotten beasts steadily carving their way up to them from below. Now add the fact that they prefer dragging the socks off their friends' backs to stockpiles instead of building walls or taking up weapons. Fruitflies ain't got shit on our dorfs.
FAILcannon seems to have been a good choice. Not to insult you personally, but...geez, that's a lot of problems.
If you survive to the next migrant wave, I'd like a dwarf. Ideally a mechanic, but as long as he's OK and not previously claimed, I'm fine. Name: Urist McLost.

It might be a bug, but certainly not an exploit.

No. A bug is a bizzare thing that makes no sense. An exploit can make no sense, but it's using DF's rudimentary physics in a way that's normally fine but that at times breaks away from reality.

This is an exploit.

Did Toady just release another update, and if so, what's in it that makes it more ideal than, say, 31.18?
Ideally it'd be like .19 without all the bugs. Most notable are grazing, vermin biting & creatures spawn chance, all of which I already have plans for.

And if you dont like picks just dont use them.
I wasn't sure if there was a specific bug/feature in .19 or .20 that would be required for his idea of this fort.

If you're getting forts to run for 3~4 years after only 10 days of playing, you're doing pretty good. After you get the hang of things, you'll figure out what playstyle you want to use.

I read about DF for a year or two on the wiki and forums before downloading, and when I started I still had lots of stupid deaths.
So yeah, the OP is doing great.

I almost lost a fort to one (and DID lose my pick) and then another flooded my dining hall and kept flooding the bedrooms and the hall because my engraver was too dumb to engrave from inside the room. THEN I couldn't use the aquifer to flood the caverns!

The low population makes raising a military unfeasible right now though, as I've had 0 idlers since we embarked.

0 IDLERS?!? For that long? Wow, I usually have to deal with lots of idlers for a while and a few after that. Especially miners.

55182
immigrant miners do bring picks with them.
...That will complicate things...

What do people think about a Dwarf succession fort where:
Stuff
Cool! One thing:

You cannot embark with a miner or a pick, and you cannot purchase a pick from caravans. EDIT: You must also forbid and/or destroy all picks immigrants arrive with. Maybe kill the offenders, too.

Notes:
This means no stone or metal that you don't trade for, and that trading with elves is harder. Embark on a forest and don't bother with underground seeds. Military is important, and you might consider finding a cave.

And if anyone tries this challenge, let me know please.

FLOOD: Temporarily raises water and lava levels in  natural sources. Alternatively, turns all underground soil tiles into aquifers.

CAVEIN: All tiles over a certain wideness of open space collapse.

UUDDLRLRBA: Something nasty. Maybe a pit under your highest-ranking noble leading straight to the HFS?

WINGAME: Displays message, "Congratulations! Your dwarves are still here, though, so keep playing."

55185
Did you remember to buff chickens?

Also, will this work with 31.18?
