DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: King of the Beasts Tournament
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:51:58 pm »
Titans and Forgotten Beasts have the tacky tendency to be made of gasses, it seems, which makes combat all-but laughable.  On the other hand, megabeasts like dragons and hydra can get interesting.  It mostly depends on if that first burst of flame is lethal.  If it's not killer, then the opponent can get in close, and then it gets Fun.

What? Dragons are too dumb to fly out of their enemies' reach? Clearly these are not true dragons, and are no more than large, flying (occasionally), firebreathing animals.

It's a weird fact. If a groundhog is being pounded by your Armok's Chosen Legendary Warriors and their war elephants, your woodcutter will flee, even if he's a retired axedwarf. However, a green hunter with a cruddy groundhog bone crossbow (courtesy of the aforementioned Armok's Chosen) and a half-dozen wooden bolts will gladly shoot the local wildlife, even if it's the wild cousins of those war elephants. This gets messy.

Since it's early in the fort, everyone should have unworn clothes. They're less likely, at least, to claim clothes if they're already wearing things on those body parts. There's no certain way of stopping them from claiming the robe, though.
There should be some way to prevent it though, an order to the effect of "The clothes we're making are for the traders, you morons, so don't claim them," or else a designation for individual clothes.

I bet the best mega will be the dragons.

Well, yeah, I'm biased, but their flying and fire will let them melt bronze colossi and burn hydras at their leisure while the enemies shake their fists and...some appendage that hydras have...in fury.

Ideally, you'll make a robe out of the leather. Robes have a base value of 33.

Of course, since your idiots dwarves might decide that they like the look of that fancy new robe, preventing you from selling it, it might be more beneficial to make waterskins instead. You always get 3 waterskins per piece of leather, and at a base value of 10 each, that's a total of 30 base value.
Any way to stop 'em from taking it, short of forbidding the robes?

I recently tried to freeze an aquifer...but failed to consider that it would also freeze my miner with my only pick. Oops.

The upshot is, no stone. Only wood. I decided to use my war grizzly bear and his owner (a Legendary fighter, Master wrestler, Skilled biter, Legendary striker, Talented kicker, Professional armor user, and Novice dodger due to failing to kill a camel before I had the bear trained) kill a camel to turn its assorted parts into assorted products, because I need wood for my bedrooms.

Anyhoo, I need to know what to do with the leather for the best value when the traders come. What do you suggest?

Dear Urist McWoodcutter,
Next time you abandon a fort, don't stick around to kill a heavily wounded adventurer when he can't burninate you.

Sincerely,
Gonna destroy your whole world or at least give you a very unpleasant death if I ever find you

You do realize there's an 'edit' button, right? There are only a few scenarios that warrant a doublepost.

I hadn't noticed no one else had posted.
My bad.

--------------
Dear Urists McEveryone:
Maybe you're stupid. Maybe you're not.
Please be predictable, at least.

EDIT:
This goes for you, Urist McMason. I thought that designated walls would stop you from building from THE INSIDE OF A MURKY POOL. Next time, if there is one, it's fine to stand on the nice, neat, unfinished farm plot, 'kay?

I NEED IDEAS!
Pit of magma surrounding an island (artificial, of course; bonus points if made of ice!) on which the dragons are placed. Have a sacrificial pit a z-level or two above the island. Drop nobles and goblins down there. Maybe figure out some way to drop elven traders into the sacrificial pit without losing too much building materials.

Dear Urists McStarving:
I know you think you should spend your time trying to hunt rats. They, as well as all other creatures, like that dragonborn kobold* ex-adventurer that killed Urist McWoodcutter when he approached him, are being kept out, and you in, by a wall.
One that is designated for removal.
It's not hard, morons.

Sincerely,
Siding with his old adventurer.
*Not vanilla.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP! YOU ACTUALLY REMOVED THE WALLS!

Dear My Old Adventurer,
The dwarves will be better sport if they're not starving.
Sincerely, The fore unknown that guided you.

Dear Urist McEngraver:
Please stop engraving long enough to eat.

Dear Urist McMason:
Please stop idling long enough to make tables and chairs for our dining room.

Dear Urist McMiasmacausing:
I know I shouldn't have told you to cut wood right next to that retired adventurer with dragonfire breath, but please stop generating miasma from the refuse pile. You are in your coffin across the hall, and there is nothing else that can cause it.

Dear Urists McStarvingandtryingtohuntvermininthesealedcavern:
Next time, don't lose the 76 units of food you embarked with.

That is not actually unrealistic at all. Have you seen the size of a tiger? Now compare it to an average male/female. A tiger could EASILY bite off a humans toe.
And that's the realistic part.

Quote
Also, bleeding heavily from your fingers and toes is also not unrealistic. If you lose anything like that, you will bleed heavily, although it MAY stop sooner, compared to other things. It bleeds heavily because you have a lot of blood circulation in your fingers, and such. You can't expect to just get a bead of blood if a whole toe is torn off.
And THAT'S an example of why I'm not an anatamologist. And yes, I know that's not a word.

I recently got attacked at night by a tiger. I'm a human peasant lasher. The tiger bit my toe and tore it off. Unrealistic, but I'm not complaining.

The unrealistic part I'm complaining about is that I'm now bleeding heavily. From losing the forth toe on my left foot. Crazy?

Shops are only found in human-style Towns. I haven't seen them in hamlets.
Where are the towns?
