Roll To Dodge / Re: Roll to Rougelike
« on: May 31, 2014, 06:24:59 pm »
Anyone want a free hat?
"Hats are fun!"

"Barkeep! Do you have pink lemonade?"

((Quick question: Do I have a limited number of scroos or a limited amount of sol'daar?))

602
((also gwg, just look around a bit, I made two longer posts, they are easy to spot. it's not gurps))
First off, saying "it's not gurps" to explain why it's better than a GURPS-based system is a painfully obvious example of circular logic and I hate that you stooped to that.
Second off, yes you wrote two long posts. My post was requesting a summary of the long posts made by you and others plus the changes others suggested that were agreed on.

I also just checked whether I could vote multiple times, turns out, I cannot. So unless @KJ got other people to vote or circumvented it, which I doubt simply due to it seeming unlikely he would go through all that effort just to tamper with a poll, I would presume he didn't. Perhaps people voted for the old system at first but then changed their minds?
It checks IP addresses.

also I will point out that the Poll started yesterday, while the idea of the system I proposed started today, Between the old system and gurps, of course everybody would want the old system. nobody voted other because at that point, we had no other
I'd also like to point out that you're the only one who's been showing any venom for GURPS. Remember all you were saying about kj objecting to any changes at all?
Also, that there were other options, so your argument is invalid.

I will write up a complete summary once the remaining points have been adressed, mainly the problem that as it stands with str vs def going up straight, physical damage is too low, or even nil. Unlike magic, you can't just dump more mana into a spell to get damage.

my suggestion is that the quality of armaments, whatever they may be, grants a bonus to the damage roll, so that damage will almost always, unless the rolls are very unlucky or someone has very high defence, the damage will out-do the damage absorption. unless there are different ideas, or suggestions regarding what levels of quality there are and how much damage they deal, I will think about that and put it out in the full post tomorrow
If we're going with that system, then that sounds good.

So... what's the problem with people putting more energy into their punches to hit harder? Because that's basically what putting mana into a physical attack is. I don't disagree with equipment giving stats but I just think that's a bit silly.
Mana =/= Physical energy, usually.

603
So in other words, he's even more paranoid than Cyrielle.
Cyrielle's not paranoid, she just doesn't really want to be a hero.
I'd call her paranoid seeing as she walks around checking reflections and shadows to ensure that she isn't being tailed. Along with keeping virtually all her programs unconnected to herself.
Oh, that.
Yeah, that part's paranoid.

"Where are we going next?"

605
And you never adressed my point. Why can't you just keep health and mana the way they are instead of shaking the system up this much.
Because it's easier to fit them into a new system rather than shoehorning the old health-and-mana into the new one? Aside from all the issues with the system itself, of course.

Remind me, what exactly is this "new system" everyone's going on about? There's so many scattered posts filled with commentary and changes that I kinda lost track.
Also, why is it all better than a GURPS variant?

The language is a bit more complex then simply cutting words it seems. Use of proper nouns seems to indicate respect; High ranking people are never referred to as "He" or "She" or "They", but always by their name and, in extreme cases, their entire title as well. Likewise, it seems that using your own name when with someone of higher rank is seen as rude or presumptuous.  In fact, it seems like equals refer to each other and themselves by pronouns unless they're friends or more intimately involved.
Huh. More simplifications. Who guessed that pieceiwse was just wanting to make us speak dumb?

"... Well, it probably would have been more subtle to just ram the APC in..."
Kyle says watching the scene with a look of near awe.
Wow. This guy really isn't the RotMG-Kyle. Making snarky comments instead of being the butt of them?

"So uh... everyone alright? Do try not to do that again. Let me know if you need the APC moved closer, or anything. "
Jobasio speaks through the comms, watching proceedings from the driver's seat.

Grab a cold one from the APC's built-in bar fridge, sit back and relax. Oh, and uh, keep an eye on things. Yeah.
Rummage about between the seats for a convenient music cassette or equivalent, left there by a previous owner.
what.

what.
+1

((Wait, I could jump down the whole length of it without trouble? How?))
By channeling Alex Mercer?

I dunno, somehow i think its far more likely that youll be forced to build your own ant farm.
You have shown a marked dislike to me and my ideas in the past. Pyro has been much more supportive, however low the bar for that may be. I don't think you're the best judge of what will be approved or disapproved.

Quote
Also no stealing my ideas.
It was an example.

Yeah but if you get bitten and die you forget everything again including what you were doing and why.
Grate had the pill machine before being squashed. Besides, if people would friggin' post, it wouldn't take too long to get things back on track. Not to mention that the chance of venomous snake attack mid-experiment is pretty much zilch.

On the rtd-out-of-control: what are the plans for the gm? Will you have 1 gm? Will the players govern themselves again? A rotating set of gm's? A few people that only step in when things go out of hand? A permanent team of gm's?
I suspect that the single, active GM or something like that would be best. Heck if I know what's going to happen.

Quote
No, do it once, let the word spread, then drop regular pills with sugar that look exactly the same. Just to screw with their heads.
No, sabotage UWM shipments of stuff with manipulator pills. Or maybe things that would let the news get out.
Say, if the UWM is shipping food to colonies with ARM sympathies to try and get them to their side, we can lace the supplies with poison to make it look like the UWM is trying to poison potential allies of ours. Boom! Instant PR.

*slides in on butt*

Hijack?
Will you be an effective GM and not drop out after a month when the burden's too much?

Logically, shouldn't the strength requirements for weapons be reduced in low gravity and eliminated in zero gravity environments?
Depends on the weapon, but for most it would be more from inertia or recoil than from weight.

Almost 24 hours and no other posts for Hephaestus? Huh. Turn soon I'm hoping?

Quinghai awakes when the volcanoes erupt.

Quinghai chuckles to himself as he gazes over Creation.

("Neverborn microbes"? What the heck are those?)

I vote the former because it would be an amusing break from the expected.

Also, yay, I'm in!

609
I dunno, as we were technicaly hoping to power the PCs down a bit to a more managable level. But I suppose since Kyle *is* going into hiding, building some sort of flying base of operations may be feasible.
We...need to define "hiding".

Quote
as far as the hacking goes, this is a game of superpowers...
Call magic magic, and call hacking hacking. If it's magic, it isn't hacking.

Quote
Also hey, if this plays about 5 years in the future, there's probably a whole lot more computering going on as it is today.
Absence of computers isn't the problem. The problem is access. You can't hack a computer that doesn't even have any connections to computers outside its own motherboard. And for most of these things, connecting to outside sources gives no benefit; it's less like a backdoor and more like the people designing the computers knocking down a wall.

f people can hack in that way, then what's to prevent an antagonist form just hacking into ICARUS and deleting everything she has?
I like the way you think.

If it ends up being you who takes over, I wish you much luck sorting through the bullshit we filled the game with. :P
Ditto.
It was Hercules's thirteenth labor. He died before he could complete it. Granted, that's mostly because he had to wait a few milennia before he could start, but still.

not all that much bullshit. For the foreseeable future, plots will be handled by Projeck and Me for the most part. All that the GM really does is look through and approve things ((I guess before the reboot, everyone would have to fill a new, more detailed character sheet explaining stuff)), settle arguements and answer questions regarding the setting when they are not answerable by the plot-GMs
Isn't the absence of any strong central authority part of what got us here? We don't want to replace one rope of sand with a slightly more active one.

well, I'd say that mag should be used to roll magical attacks, not dex. Endurance should give you less health, while strength factors a bit more into health.

anyway, looked over gurps, and gurps seems to entirely lack any magic related stats. Meh. For a game with magic in the title, that is a bad start
So?
Magic has no single stat because there is no single "magic". IQ is used for (mechanically1) wizards, along with FP, magery level, possibly some kind of spell talent2, how many points you sink into various spells, and any other related advantages. Psions (of the mechanical variety1) have the level of their Psi Talent and how many psionic abilities they buy. Stuff like that. If you want to be better at magic, put more points in magic-related stuff.

1: I mean in the mechanics of the game. The rules for psions work as well for sorcerers, for instance.
2: By rules-as-written, the legality of having the Talent apply to spells or subsets thereof is questionable, but between simple houserules and the fact that Magery provides the same boost to magic skills this isn't a problem.

Okay,  something that has been bothering me...

WHO THE HELL HASN'T BEEN USING MIND TO RESIST MAGIC AND AIM MAGIC CAUSE I AM GOING TO KICK THEIR ASS. Also, mind is the stat that persona attacks use for power instead of magic, superpowers do to for some ungodly reason.
This is one of the problems that comes up when we don't have any kind of standardized system.

No. I don't want a new system. It seems like the big problem was people not actually using the stats right for some odd reason. We don't need this overly complicated system.
We get it. You hate change. Change killed your favorite grandmother. The fucked-up game is ay-oh-friggin-kay in kj's book. The fact that no one knows how it's supposed to work, or how horribly unbalanced it is, or how easy it is to accidentally make indestructible bosses or impotent characters? Apparently not problems.

You act like no one will try to minmax their stats anyways. It's a symptom of playing games where you can control your stats. It doesn't matter if the game suddenly has more focused stats.
Actually, it does.
Split the One Stat that Rules Them All into multiple stats, and you'll need to pay extra to get bonus accuracy, dodging, and thievery. Keep it together, and people who want to make sharpshooters, acrobats, or lovable rogues will end up with unbalanced characters through no fault or intention of their own, while clumsy oafs (oaves?) and mobile statues are impotent.

Fuck off.
I'm out.
Good riddance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You have superb timing.

It's kind of a major thing to the FE thing Akroma wants to use. It deals with with a good bit of things.
Oh hey, he's back.
Predictable, I guess.

Why did the health and mana system need revised? If I remember right it was just fine without revision and this only make a problem come back. We use d50 and keep the health system from before and boom no problem on that front.
We get it. You hate change. I already made this joke, but seriously.
You're being that old conservative grandpa everyone tolerates. You're being the Arch-Conservative that the Republicans try to shut up to keep him from discrediting them. You're being the one-eyed green troll who showed up at the end of that one episode of Yugioh: The Abridged Series. Literally everyone else thinks things need to change. Deal with it.

The results from my last poll are, at this point: Five votes that the system remain the same, and one each for GURPS, a GURPS hybrid, and borrowing ER's system. Judging by the thread chat, kj somehow voted five times. As for the others...well, could everyone vote? Please? And if I'm wrong about kj voting five times, could y'all speak up?

610
Because he's a famous magic user who would inevitably be given a deal he doesn't want by some government and if he tried speaking out against this idea he would probably be made out as a villain and have a fall from grace and really it's just simpler over all to fake his death or go into hiding.
What, Kyle's against being registered and such? He's starting to sound like those crazy people who live in the woods and blame everything on the government.

Quote
Yes, he goes into hiding because... well have you seen the Incredibles? something like that would probably happen.
Ignoring for a second how no one's suggesting anything remotely like that...remember how Mr. Incredible was separated from all of his friends from his superheroing days? Neither do I. He lived with Elastigirl, hung out regularly with Frozone, and it's implied that he kept in contact with other supers before they got, you know, murdered. Spoiler alert for a ten-year-old extremely popular movie, by the way.

So in other words, he's even more paranoid than Cyrielle.
Cyrielle's not paranoid, she just doesn't really want to be a hero.

Donations from big companies.
Who and why?

Anti-magic generators for one.
Lots of data on magical threats, some purely magical weapons, and the schematics for Kyle's power armor.
They're sharing all that? News to me.

They use a completely custom coding language, if people attempt to take it by force the base is nuked, and if the employees take something that could be a real problem they are put on d-class duty. Less severe punishments are given for less severe or more beneficial deals.
Wait, hold on a sec. How does that work, exactly?

And D-class duty puts you with the mean stuff. Not deadly. Just painful.
Said like a true non-SCP-Foundation-reader!

How the hell was magic unknown by the general public prior to the Layar invasion if major corporations knew about it already?
Because kj doesn't think things through? Ever?
I think the question is, What were Yuri's family and IRIS doing before the invasion?
See above.

Fairly certain this is falling into GM jurisdiction since Scapheap was the one that let Yuri's thing go on and Elf is the one who was okaying the lore for IRIS.
Don't blame Elf for anything, we all know he never does any GMing. (Sorry.)
As for scapheap, I don't think Yuri's family originally did much except exist and keep the one thing bound.

Quote
And really now's a bit late for you to bring that up.
It's when it's coming up. And smaller parts have come up before.

How did Cerberus from Mass Effect do it?
I assume lazy writing. Or the threats weren't secret. Or crime. I dunno, I haven't played Mass Effect.

...I also said something somewhere about this NOT being Puella Magi, I'm sure of it.
So, you want it to be based on magical girl shows (which almost no one watches), but not all of them, just specific (unnamed, unwatched) ones.

And @SmurfingtonTheThird has now given a takeover bid hijack offer. Not entirely sure if it's still considered a hijack if he politely offers it :P
Interesting.

611
Everyone.
Are we talking about a Kyle who isn't surrounded by friends at his castle, most of whom actively try to make sure he doesn't feel isolated and whatnot?

You gotta get past Simus first.
somehow i think that she will want the flesh pits to be used to make actually useful sods, so good luck with that.
Pretty sure I can get something for testing something so potentially powerful. It's worth the investment, if it means we might someday get, say...
6 foot tall bulletproof termite/mantis hybrid with monorazor scythe arms and the capability to disguise themselves as a guy wearing a raincoat by folding their wings over themselves and covering their face with a two part bone mask.
...to replace the current sods we have at nearly zero cost.

Quote
Oh and in before grate gets bitten by a snake and dies again.
He'll just respawn.

Second off, if I have to design a first-gen-testing homunculus, I'm going to be accelerating the growth process quite a bit. It doesn't have to be as clever as a sod, nor as tough; it just has to be humanoid, have a hominid biochemistry, and ideally be capable of movement.
Don't forget size. We don't know how size affects the results of the pills, but if it's a nonissue or can be compensated for, there's no reason you'd need them any larger than convenient. Mouse or cockroach-sized sods are probably quite a bit quicker to grow than slightly-larger-than-normal-human ones.
That should indeed help. If nothing else, I should be able to shed a good chunk off of them easily. After all, if the sods can go through what would be fore a human 15-20 years of growth in 90-100 days, I should be able to get a small child in three weeks or so without any other factors.

How about testing partial doses as well? Like half a pill? Or a bit of powder?

Who knows? Maybe a tiny bit of manipulator pill powder mixed with something else could function well as a suicide/kamikaze pill.
I'd not testing that specifically, but that's a good idea.

613
Actually, trying to get people to rebel against the govenrment for trying to regulate magic users like that sounds exactly like something Kyle would do. I'd do it to since I think it's stupid and would be way to expensive and impracticable to put into effect.
Congratulations! Kyle is not most citizens of the assorted nations of the world.

Digital piracy also isn't the same as registering yourself for something you can't control.
Digital piracy also doesn't grant you the ability to set people on fire with your mind, precognitively screw with the stock market, or summon demons. Better believe that there's gonna be more enforcement if that somehow happens.

This is sounding like a combination of Worm, and X-Men.
That's not a bad thing.
Assuming this doesn't end up like the Marvel Civil War, that is.

Isolation.
Isolation from what?

614
Is it as crappy as everyone says?
Everywhere's as crappy as everyone says Chicago is, if you look in the right place.
Except Gary. That's worse, these days.

First off, the first substep is going to be comparing the results of known pill types' effects on humans to those on the fuzzy rat-ants (rants?) that I found and any other vaguely mammalian creatures I can find to see if they're applicable. If they are, score!
Second off, if I have to design a first-gen-testing homunculus, I'm going to be accelerating the growth process quite a bit. It doesn't have to be as clever as a sod, nor as tough; it just has to be humanoid, have a hominid biochemistry, and ideally be capable of movement.
Third off, if I have to wait a few months to get my test subjects, then I will wait a few months and get test subjects.
