Roll To Dodge / Re: Mall Fight: RTD-ified: GTA: Canada?
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:59:21 am »
It's interesting how no one seems to be really killing anybody much...
In my case, it's because I've finally been given an opportunity to use the mad-scientist aspect of my character I've been planning since the beginning.

Which reminds me.

Greenstar: If I turn Coel into some kind of cybrog minion, what would happen? Would I get a kill point and the original would respawn, or what?
I'd advise that. If I succeed, I would have lost a little something by not killing him first and making a zombie cyborg servant, and Avis would have nothing to do.

((I...
I don't exactly want to run it tbh. but I want to have run it, and to have done a decent job at it.
So I'm doing it anyway, mostly as a kind of pride thing. I don't feel like I'm a good GM, but I know the only way I could become one is to practice, so I'm trying to make things work anyway.
((Practice is good, but the rest of that sentence fills me with dread. I've tread that route too many times. Don't run games you're finding you don't enjoy running after a few turns.
Also don't have 20 characters running willy-nilly everywhere, but you seem to have that down pat.))

Quote
as for the party's viability, in several ways the hardest part is past. the biggest danger to you all was your lack of information, now that you know what you're up against, and what triggers what, and so on, as well has having a sheltered place to return too as long as you don't reveal its location and get them all, including the healer, killed, you should be ok if you're careful.))
((We have a party? I thought we were a bunch of refugees in a basement.))

Try to locate one of the newcomers who doesn't look too scary. Talk with him/her.
((And that's the cue of one of the other characters to chat with Angel. Here's hoping I'm online when they do.))

A bluenette kid
Bluenette?

Also, I can't place it, but I think I like your character less now.

8329
I wish we had more aptly named weapons here in the east like you west-folk...
I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

8330
Hm. Still slightly better than Big Rigs, if you can't walk through walls and off the map. And at FTL speeds in reverse.

8331
((Angels, demons, and dragons are "young" races?))
I was talking about the character being young, not the race.
There are young demons and angels?

8332
Acupuncture.

8333
Hey dudes, remember Vornar?

I don't know what about this situation could POSSIBLY have reminded me of him.

Any ideas?
That occurred to me, too, but seriously. Killing 40 people?

Think about this logically. You have discovered that someone you met yesterday is a mass murderer. She shows no remorse for this, and in fact tries to flimsily justify her murders by claiming that accidentally wandering into an unmarked, invisible enclave is a crime which deserves to be punished by death, because this enclave cannot (say) incapacitate the people before wiping their memories and dropping them off outside, or if that's too complex put up a freaking sign. Also, she has revealed herself to be lying, because when you consider the numbers she's given to make it sound less bad, they don't add up. What do you do?
A. Ignore it and cheerfully accept the serial killer into your circle of friends!
B. Call the police!
If you chose A, congratulations! You have not thought this through.

(Also note that I'm not saying "WE MUST ALL KILL HAI ALSO AKROMA IS A SOCIOPATH," I'm just saying "WTF? Will's calling the cops, by the way."

I think it's more that Akroma and GWG have very different ideas as to what constitutes reasonable statistics and so on and so forth.
Look at the numbers. Either Hai is a major Mary Sue warrior who is almost single-handedly responsible for keeping the humans out of her enclave (meaning she shouldn't have left, and should be kicked out of the game and replaced* before the Sueness gets out of hand), or she is lying big time about how many people her people kill.
*By another character of Akroma's, I mean. Just because your first character is a serial killer possible Mary Sue doesn't mean you should be banned from the game.

you seem to have a problem seperating IC and OOC.
Oh? I'm pretty sure Will is IC as opposed to murder as I am OOC.

Quote
note how my my character description clearly mentions that she is swanky. boastful. In other words, she pads stories out. Those 40 might be 10, might be 4. The stories become more lively with every itteration. If in a week she retells the story of laying needles on Esters father, by that time the car that hit him might have become an auto-bot, and laying the needles might have become him being torn in half and being stitched together.
Well, how is Will supposed to know that? Now, that would be mixing IC with OOC.
Not to mention, she's still definitely a murderer.

Quote
for someone with "super intuition", Will sure has a nack for taking everything that is said, ever, at face value.
Intuition requires something to go on. Besides, he's as much tearing down Hai's claims as anything.
Also, it's pretty clear that she has killed people. Four or forty, this is a felony.

Quote
note also how the effects of her needle work where in the character description from the very start, and I have heared no word from Elf that this is unapproved off. The problem is that super-accuracy is the name elf came up for it, but I have always made it clear from the start that my intention was to hit accupressure points and sensitive parts of anatomy in a small cause, big effect fashion.
Well, I'm sorry I don't automatically sense the intention of everything you try to do. Maybe you should have made this more clear? Especially since enhanced accuracy is already a pretty useful power?
Also, acupressure is acupuncture with massages replacing needles. You're not doing that.

Quote
you say it didn't have the effect I wanted, but Elf said no such thing.
Look at the scene again. You attempt to remove the drugs from Marten's system, but USEC continues to have MArten act as though he was under the drugs' effect. I'd call that a pretty big failure.

Quote
I say again, that from my first post to know, *this* has always been and will remain the kind of power I had in mind for Hainuwele, anything else is a misunderstanding. For the future, refer to the post above as to what Hainuwele does. She is a very agile, but frail, status-slinger. Compared to all the gods that are running around, that is hardly an unacceptably broken power. Judging by how people immediatly suggested I should use a weaponised form of ebola that turns cells into CF3, I take it is actually a rather weak power.
Well, it may not be overpowered, but it would help if it was explicitly stated.
Consider Angel/Nuriel. Fire sounds usefully dangerous, but really, it isn't. Its only applications that will be useful often are combat, and there are plenty of foes immune or resistant to it, plus the constant risk of collateral damage. Am I trying to find some implied power that I never said Nuriel could do?

Quote
The accupressure
Acupuncture. Stop using words you don't know what they mean.

Quote
becomes increasingly difficult (higher DC to beat), the further removed the target is from human anatomy. Fingerling and Human anatomy are, except for the difference in scale, incredibly similar as far as the lay of the meridians go, as is the case most, but certainly not all, humanoids (two arms, two legs, one head, one torso), and becomes increasingly difficult the further removed the general built of the target is, requiring a bit of time, planning and a decent portion of luck to properly extrapolate(though mind 30 helps).
Guess what? You're never going to be using acupuncture on non-humanoids. That's slightly more of a limitation than saying that Nuriel's fire can't set stone on fire.

Enough.

GWG, Akroma, settle it in the PMs or I will lock down the OOC. I refuse to let this thread be shut down because of another Vornar incident. Am I clear?
I'll post this, because of how much time I spent and the fact that I couldn't see your request until after I had invested the time (seriously I got ninja'd like a dozen times), and I refuse to stop trying to get Hai in jail for killing however many people, but if Akroma is willing to let the argument stop there I'm fine with it.

On that subject, now that my annoyed warning has been deployed.....huggles?
I'm willing to huggle anyone who isn't a serial killer.
(P.S. This is referring to Akroma's character, not Akroma. Should be obvious, but it doesn't hurt to make that clear.)

8334
Plans and preparation are good.

Spoiler: Angel Carlson (click to show/hide)
Will fluff later.

8336
accupuncture IRL is only good for pain relief. we are talking about accupuncture in a world where kindergardners get possessed by burning angels
Demon, actually.
And if you wanted magical acupuncture, you should have taken it for your power. Which kinda explains why it didn't have the effect you wanted (ie, removing the drugs from Marten's system).

Selina wonders if she'll ever be able to give Nuriel and Demons Run their gifts.
Maybe if you reminded Nuriel about the gift? She has a short attention span at times.

"It is why I favor the earth realm."
But not fitting in was a close second.

-snip-
There are many problems with this.
The proposed numbers don't add up when you add in that Hai has claimed to have killed 38 or 39 (I forget which) humans herself. Either barely anyone else ever kills a human, even the warriors who are defending the town--which makes your character heavily Mary Sue-ish--or your character is a bald-faced liar who is hoping neither Stella nor Will realize you're asking them to put two and two together to get 0.01.
And seriously, she murdered 40 fucking people, what the hell?

((Let's just say stop whining or something! *insert other lazy attempt to shut up conflict here*))
Which conflict? Because if it is people arguing with Ms. "It was right to kill the nearly 40 people who wandered onto my people's territory without knowing!", then no I will NOT stop arguing. SHE KILLED (one or two short of) 40 PEOPLE!

((No conflict here, I'm just in my usual morning agression mode that comes whenever I read GWGs posts. At such a time, it's rather annoying when once again my actions are declared faulty because all the information of the setting is neither listed nor implied. I detailed my action to fit accordingly, and that's it, Elf is the one with the authority, if he sais everyone is fighting crime at all times, I guess that's that.))
Like Reality Unless Noted. Chief among those: Killing people is fucking wrong. Seeing you try to justify so many murders, and then make up numbers that make it not sound so bad, while admitting that the people you killed were just in the wrong place and were normal people, sickens me.

"Hm... I'll up the cash the more you show while you do your thing. Five hundred is where I'll stop and I'll tell you when."
Bethany may notice something is up with Kyle's eyes but it's not really much to worry about.
Will facepalms.
((Care to explain the look, for Will? I'm pretty sure his previous comments on the situation show he was present.))

Kyle smirks and gets close to Bethany.
"Get me one of up your skirt... I'll double it."
Annnnnnnd that gets a punch in the face.
"Excellent choice. Kyle, seriously, be a gentleman."

"In the last 100 years, we have killed less humans than how many of us a human has killed in a single day."
"You claim yo have killed almost 40 humans yourself. Even assuming this is twice the usual number for a warrior, that warriors are only 1% of the whole population, and that you have been a warrior for a solid 20 years--around how long I believe you have been alive--that implies that an average warrior kills one human per year--one dead for every hundred people. Overall, a society of merely 500--the approximate minimum for sustainable breeding--would have killed 500 people over that hundred years. Therefore, the whole community of 500 would have been more than wiped out by a single human in a single day. Therefore, in order for this claim to be true, either some other lie would have needed to be made earlier, or you are an impossibly proficient warrior."
(And a bit of a Mary Sue.)

Quote
"Less than humans kill other humans in a single day."
"Hardly fair. Humans see each other every day, you see humans barely ever. Of course we kill more humans--that's like saying more murders happen in America than Antarctica. Moreover, with a handful of exceptions, humans do not kill other humans on sight; your kind do. In other words, humans kill only the tiniest fraction of other humans they come across, but you kill damn near every human you see."

Quote
"As a whole, there is a bigger amount of fatal snake bites each year than what we kill in a hundred years."
"Again, there are more people being bitten by snakes each year than finding you. Besides, that means you kill less than a thousand people per year--not terribly reassuring."

Quote
"I'd take a guess, it might very well be less than the amount the average dragon would kill in a hundred years."
"That's racist. It implies that dragons are human-killing savages."
Will is glaring at Hai right now.

Quote
You say we underestimate the giants capacity for compassion? You underestimate the giants capacity for cruelty. They don't need to be combatants. All it takes is a young boy who likes to play with insects, or a man who takes a bit of a drink and gets offended at a bad joke, and we have a catastrophy at our hands that can lay waste to entire districts.
"And you use this to justify killing every human you come across?"

Quote
I find it remarkable how much you can blow up the death of less than 100 humans over the last 100 years--"
"So, less than a hundred humans have been killed over the past century, and you have personally killed almost 40?"
((Seriously, what the hell?))

Quote
"--to be a war crime without example, and at the same time can not fathom just how much of a threat even a single human can pose to our kind. If single human spreads the details of our location, soon more will come, and even if those are kind and compassionate and only genuinely interested, they will leave spreading the stories, and every year more will come, and with everyone that comes, the risk rises. You call it unreasonable that we judge humanity over one drunkard? We are judging the potential risk. A single drunkard to us is an attack of what you call a Kaiju to you. It is no laughing matter. The sheer damage done is enormous. All because he had a little drink, as so many humans do, and took offense in a joke and got angry. The chance is almost 100% that will happen again if we allow humans to freely come to our land and then go back home to invite others. Even if the amount of humans that would do us no harm is the overwhelming advantage, a single bad egg can poison the entire cake.
"Have you considered the possibility of, you know, talking with the human governments? We can deal with drunks in our towns, we can protect you from other drunks. Or, you know. only attack people who are actually destroying your town, and don't fucking kill people just because they're drunk. Or, hell, a simple 'Do Not Enter' sign or something would do wonders. Why didn't any of your kind think of something like that?"

Quote
Your own reaction proves my point - giants can not see us as equals."
"I see you as an equal, deserving to be tried in the same courts."

Quote
"I am telling you about the havoc mankind has wrecked upon us, bringing us the brink of extermination, and all you see is the handfull of people we have killed to prevent that from happening. That's not the viewpoint among equals, it's the viewpoint a man has upon the dog that has attacked a human. Nobody cares if the dog had a reason, they all just call to put him down.
"Your species is killing uncounted numbers of people--you claim only a handful, but you have personally killed nearly 40 so that is obviously a lie--and you claim that every one of them deserved to die?"

Quote
The unfortunate ones that stumble into our territory, small at it is, were prepared for danger. It's far away from trails and camping spots, they'd have to go where there isn't a human being in every direction along the horizon. Anything could happen there. As I have said, the risk of being bitten and killed by a poisonous snake on the way to us is higher than actually stumbling through the glamour.
"Then how do so many people do it? Even the one-a-year you have claimed is too high for that."

Quote
If you fancy yourself a champion of justice, try and come to perspective. If you are a defender os humanity, ask yourself, does humanity need a defender? And if so, from *what* does it need to be defended from? That we have to make sure they do not leave to spread our secret among the world is unfortunate, but the only responsible decision. It's not an easy decision, mind you, but just have a look around. Just last year, about 10 species have gone extinct because of giants. And the efforts giant activists made to prevent that were half-hearted, and by the majority of humanity, was just smiled at."
"You are condemning the whole for the actions of a few?"

Quote
"The only problem is, the number of people who encroach on our territory has been increasing over the last decade."
"It's almost as if hundreds of people have been vanishing in that area, and people want to know what happened to their loved ones...OH WAIT, that IS what's happening, you murderous mouse-sized bitch!"
(The dragon comment was the straw that broke the camel's back. Especially since Stella was the only dragon-blooded creature Will had any reason to think Hai had seen, since no dragons had been seen in recent history.)

Quote
"It has become almost impossible to keep up. and frankly, I see no solution to that problem, other than to earn the respect of humanity *before* the location is unveiled."
"And I'm sure killing hundreds, if not thousands, of people is a GREAT way to earn their respect."

Quote
"Esters father was just the first, though I fear my own effort will go entirely unnoticed when there is freaking gods all over the town, that make my own efforts, as well as the efforts of anyone else just pale. If need be, I could have saved that man myself, and neither the surgeons nor that quack would have been needed."
"With what, acupuncture? We have that, too. We've moved on because it doesn't work."
(If you want magic acupuncture, choose it as your magical ability. I'm not asking for Nuriel to spontaneously develop the ability to cover areas in darkness, or to turn people into demons, or anything like that.)

Quote
"And I will continue to jump at every chance to prove myself and through that my kind as equal to humanity. Through valor. Not as a beggar, not as a threat, but as an equal. All that it takes now is proper opportunity."
"I'll give you an opportunity..."

AfterHai flies away, Will calls the police station.
"Hello, Northdale police? I have a strange report to give, but if you'll trace the call you'll note that I am in the worldwide heart of strange. There was a four-inch woman showing up yesterday, who claimed to be from an enclave of other such individuals. She boasted that in the defense of said enclave, she had killed nearly 40 humans who were just blundering through. Further stories explaining these encounters suggested that the individuals were killed on sight after an unfortunate accident involving a drunkard. If you want, I could bring the woman in for questioning at some point."

P.S.
"...Oh! That reminds me. Selina, could you pull these out?" Will removes the slightly crumpled copy of the plans of the parts for his server thing.

Spoiler: Battle map (click to show/hide)

Each hex is five feet across. If you go straight at the enemy, the lines of meeting hexes are five feet also. I know this might be a little wonky, because Hexes can't be five feet across on both, but we're going with it.

You might want to rethink some of your actions, you have a little time before they get close enough to charge. :P
((We get a cheesy--but concrete--tactical advantage from this setup.))
((There's nine of us, not counting my future arrival. We do not, in fact, get a tactical advantage from this.))
((I don't think Corfax, Drakruldus, or Skitter would be terrible enthused about melee combat.))

I'll be a Crystal with an Auto Shotgun.

Also, I'm fairly sure I came up with the abbreviation "ASG". To see it in popular usage makes me feel a bit more cheerful, as though I've accomplished something.

If anyone's working on a TWoOtA game, slap together a half-working version, call it beta, and release it tomorrow.
It would end up being more of an alpha than a beta.
That suggestion was as much a joke about game companies releasing absurdly incomplete games as "beta," or even incomplete games as the final project! The worst offender being, of course, Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing.

Also, happy TWoOtAversery!
