I'll agree that some of the mechanics for combat/Units don't make a lot of sense, partly because this is a game based on giant robot animes, and partly because my mechanics can be shitty at times. Still, that's what GR@W 2 is for, eh? And if you have any suggestions/ideas on how to improve things, I'd love to hear them.
If we're going to be making this scientifically accurate, we can't have mecha. Therefore we shouldn't worry too much about scientific accuracy. (Which was the point of bringing up that this was a mecha game.)

I am going to disagree about the correlation between land size and research capacity though. Europe is only a small part of the world, but they (more or less) managed to surpass everyone technologically for a couple centuries.
By sheer chance. Eurasia as a whole was always ahead, due to factors like axis direction, availability of domesticable species, and (believe it or no) size; the fact that Europe was ahead of Asia for a while had mainly due to (Warning! Generalizations ahead!) with the fact that the Asians conquered up to Europe before having their warlord die and so everyone had to go home to vote, then the Chinese emperors went on a conservative streak letting Europe leap ahead. Eurasia's size was one of the big factors in letting it get as massive as it did; no region of the New World optimal for advanced civilization was the size of even Europe, which meant they could support more people even if they had the same animals and such.
More importantly, while it doesn't matter much if we're contrasting between, say, Europe and the Midwest, it matters a lot if we're contrasting, say, North Korea and the entire democratic world. Or a handful of colonies totalling up to maybe a couple million, and the entire Earth of several billion. Little places simply can't support as many researchers, as many labs, as many particle accelerators, etc.

Besides, I'd rather not have research related to empire size due to balance issues. If the largest empire had the most research, then it's obviously unstoppable since it can produce large numbers of Units that are several levels above everyone else. It's not terribly fun when it happens, trust me.
True enough. Which is why I brought it up in "realism issues" and not "balance issues".

Spoiler: More X-Com Stuff (click to show/hide)
Ninjedit: There was a new post. And X-Com related one. Thanks for the advice!

I take it you won't let me go, then?
Bismillah, no! We will not let you go.
I love you guys.
But I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me...
That's the first one I did.

"I don't know, Angel, that seems awfully expensive for just a couple more hours each day..."
"Aw."
"If I bought this, you wouldn't get anything else until Christmas."
That encouraged Angel. She left the store, looking for something else to get. Maybe something that would let her make gifts for people? She didn't know when Derry's birthday was, but it could be soon...and he couldn't argue if she gave him a gift on his birthday!

Look for a shop for something like enchanting or magically crafting/summoning stuff or something.

A couple things there GWG, you could get a tidy sum of coins from him with the fact that that Minotaur might have stolen some money from other people, also that horn might be useful for upgrading your weapon.
Noted. Shame I didn't skewer him, though. What's he wearing, steel mesh? Spider silk?

"What're you wearing? Chainmail? Enchanted silk? Should make up for this trouble."
Use my grip on his horn to vault atop his head. If he proves able to support my weight, sit between the horns and grab ahold of the other one. If successful, quip that I have the cow by the horns (minotaurs presumably hate being called cows) and smack him in the nose with my heel.

Well, since magic damage seems to be directly tied to strength for some reason Twink charges into the fray ears first.
Kick Twink in the face, because he's an asshole.
"Now this is a party!"
Grab the closest elf and beat the second-closest elf with him.
That would be Markland and Rom, respectively.
Beat Rom because of bad language
"God damn it all to hell, now there's... hm. Well, my standards ain't that high, really..."

Suck up as much eggnog from the ground as possible. I've drunk less sanitary things before. If I can, be wary and careful of any others using me as an impromptu bludgeon.
[Initiative: Twink 2-1(4-1), Rom 2+1, FedUps 4(3), Raron 2-1(6-1), Mark 1+3(1+3)]
[Order: Markland, FedUps, Rom, Raron, Twink]
[Drinking: 5+1] You suck up the eggnog greedily. Um, for future reference, few potions work well in one's lungs. [4-1] This one has partial effect, thankfully...not that you know what it is. FedUps swiftly discovers, however...
[Picking up Markland: 4+3]
[Aiming Markland: 6+1v4+1-1-1]
[Rom Resistance: 1+3v2-1]
[Markland Resistance: 1+3v4]
[FedUps Resistance: 1+3v3+1]
[FedUps Grip: 2+3-2]
[Markland Grip: 1+1]
FedUps lifts the thirsty, choking elf above his head before smashing him into Rom, who seems dragged into the blow. Rom's head is smashed by the elf-wielding elf, dazing him, with worse to come. Like, brain damage worse. Markland and FedUps are comparatively okay, although the former slips a bit out of the latter's grasp. Pudding also escapes grasps, but of Markland.
Twink is not here yet, and you don't feel like running right now.
[Raron attack: 5-1v3+1-1-1]
[Raron ouchies: 5+3v4-1]
[Airplane Attack: 4v6+1-1]
Raron charges at Rom, breaking some ribs. His airplane zooms past, whistling sadly.
And, finally, Twink shows up.
[Twink Attack: 2v2+1-1-1]
[Twink Damage: 3-2-1v2-1-1]
[Rom counter: 5-1-1v5-1]
He body-slams Rom, who kicks. The two fall down before being dragged apart.

A Judge drags Rom and Twink apart. "Ye arraght?"

[4+3] Another elf, looking made of granite, enters the fray, tearing open a white Nintendo 3DS that has a couple highlighted buttons, one silver and one lime green.
