Everything was going fine. Hyper Tetsucabra #2 of 3 was about half dead, I was adept-evading everything easily...

Then he pulled a rock out of the ground. I wasn't worried. I mean, he'd done this a dozen times already. I adept-evaded his charge, laughing at his obvious telegraphed attacks, and then BOP - I was suddenly dead.

It took me a second to figure out what had happened, but then I realized I had walked into the rock he'd left sitting there and it had randomly shattered while I was next to it, somehow eviscerating my entire health bar. What.

This post ended up being a bit more long-winded than I expected, so it's getting spoilered. Read if you're interested in opinions on MHGen and the changes it's made to the series.

As someone who plays Adept Longsword 70% of the time and Adept Charge Blade the other 30%, I can comfortably say that Adept style is pretty insanely good. It won't stop you from getting greedy and being punished for attacking too much, but it does allow you to get out of really dangerous situations that normal evades could never save you from, which enables you to be a lot more aggressive.

That said, it's not always the most fun style. Thanks to the addition of hunter arts, I find myself playing Guild Longsword at times, too, because I like to have both Sakura Slash and Critical Juncture available just to feel like a badass.

Additionally, the adept evades don't work perfectly on some monsters that have combo attacks. For example, against Brachy, if you dodge the first punch on his two-punch combo move, he'll often punish your adept evade with the second punch while you're stuck in the adept evade running animation.

tl;dr - it's not the end-all be-all, but it is extremely powerful.

The Azure Rathalos is dead! Long live the nul-fire gems!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You're making pretty good progress. Make sure to come back and report when you get to face Golden Rathian, yeah?
As a word of encouragement, Gold Rathian isn't actually that hard. Even though the jump in difficulty from Rathian to Pink Rathian is fucking ridiculous at first, Goldie doesn't seem to behave much differently aside from being armor-plated and having some more explosive fireballs.
The reason I single out Gold Rathian is because of the particular phenomenon that occurs when you fight it...

I think there was a wild dog simulator, so perhaps it's not too far-fetched.
I see what you did there.

Battling Urugaan with a friend. Critical Juncture had just charged, and I retreated to sharpen my weapon. Urugaan saw my moment of weakness and decided it would be a good time to roll at me. But alas! His timing was too late, and I stood up and activated my hunter art.

His body collided with my longsword and he fell past me, his tail flying off in a flash of blood and petals.

Epic counterattack ability is epic.

As it would turn out, the trick to beating the Black Gravios is to shank it in the back until its back breaks. After that, you can slash him to pieces with impunity when he's firing his laser without fear of being assaulted by burning gas, as breaking his back causes the laser-cooldown-gas to be vented out his back.

He is now in a million pieces in my storage closet. Good fight, Gravy.

Tips for Smurfalos:
- He likes flying. Bring flash bombs to knock him out of the air.
- He also likes to spam fireballs. Eating for fire resist should help you stay alive.
- He might make use of the dreaded roar->360 noscope fireball combo. Again, bring fire resist, and if you can get your hands on some earplugs, even better.
- As with all monsters, don't get greedy. Jump in on openings, attack, get out of there.

Good luck! *Salutes*

Fought Glavenus for the first time, accompanied by my long-time hunting partner and friend. He went ham on its face with his hammer (haha) while I skirted around it like a madman, trying to hit its tail with my longsword. It ran to another area, and I pursued it closely, trying to get free hits on the tail.

I was practically inside him when I crossed into the next zone, so I booked it forward, only to get a tail-slam to the back which knocked off half my health and sent me sprawling. Said slam was immediately followed by another, bigger tail-slam while I was still getting on my feet. Ow.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I got my revenge shortly after that by lopping off his tail with a stylish roundslash, so it's all good.

Just fought the Fated Four (MHGen's four flagship monster's, if you don't know). They're pretty cool, and they each have their own nifty battle theme, too.

I was pretty impressed with all of them, aside from Gammoth, who was just a giant punching bag that occasionally throws out massive AOE attacks. Astalos is really, really cool. It's like Seregios and Zinogre had a badass baby. Glavenus is a giant sword-tail T-Rex, so... 'nuff said. Mizutsune, affectionately known to me as "Bubbles," is okay. A bit evasive and annoying, but the monster design is super cool.

Edit - Also, Astalos armor glows. Glorious.

I think the devs' thought process was something like this:

Dev 1: "Hey, Switchaxe is a pretty aggressive weapon. We should give it some Hunter Arts to encourage that aggression."
Dev 2: "Sword mode gives pretty amazing DPS. How about we make arts that let people stay in sword mode as long as they keep hitting?"
Dev 1: "That's great! And easy to implement, too!"
Devs 1 and 2: *High five*

My theory is that it sounded good on paper, but in reality it was completely and utterly broken. Why they didn't nerf it during playtesting, I have no idea.

Edit - Then again, they also buffed SnS massively with oils, which was completely unnecessary, considering it was already a solid weapon with great elemental and status damage and good survivability. Seriously - playing with a friend who uses Switchaxe and SnS as two of his main weapons, I sometimes feel like I'm not contributing much at all. I work for ages trying to break a part or cut a tail, and he just comes in with destroyer oil and esplodes everything. Then he stuns the monster with his sword.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, I guess? Maybe I should invest in a sword and shield.

Pretty much. The only style which somewhat encourages axe mode is Adept, from what I've heard.

I'm not too upset about a little unbalance, though. As long as all the weapons are viable, I'll play whatever I find fun to play.

Is it just me or does the camera seem more zoomed out in Generations? Not a complaint, just an observation. Haven't played enough to know how much Imma like the game yet, but honestly, the series has taken up more of my life than anything else, and I doubt this'll rid me of my addiction.
I was curious, so I just did a side-by-side comparison with the help of Youtube videos, and nope, it looks about the same. I dunno if you got a New 3DS recently, but if you did, that might be affecting how you perceive the game.

Prowler mode does zoom the camera in quite a bit since you're smaller though, which also might affect how the game feels when you switch back to hunter.

I haven't played in some time, has anything changed to make true kins more appealing or on par with mutants? If I'm not mistaken all they had last time I played was some bonus starting stats and access to 4 cybernetics of dubious value compared to mutations.
True Men seemed to always be on par with Mutants to me, just because of the large increase in stats. You trade the ability to have a number of powerful gimmicks for greater strength and survivability overall.

It's especially noticeable early-game, where a True Man can squash most enemies without suffering too much while a Mutant will have to rely on their abilities and scurry away if they take too much damage (unless you're playing a tanky kind of mutant).

Haven't gotten a True Man to late game myself, mainly because I have more fun with Mutants, to be honest, but they seem perfectly viable as is.

Been playing online with a friend, just the two of us, and I can say that some of the Low Rank online monsters are decently challenging.

Of course, if you get High Rank armor before even tackling online, I'm sure it would be a cakewalk...
