My hype only grows stronger as I push to finish work so I can start playing.

I really hope the dialogue localization is as silly and fun as MH4U's was. Being called "Doodle" all the time and having people making references to my character's eyebrows and stuff was so ridiculous and fun it made me actually read dialogue I would normally have skipped.

FINALLY.

Screw you, Mitama's paralogue. You can't just have all promoted enemies when I'm just getting promoted units myself. I tried a lot of times, restarting when someone died as is the norm because I AM NOT LOSING ANYONE TO THIS. Finally beat it. Turns out the solution is "Blitz it to the center, let them come to you, mop up the stationary Berserkers when the enemies stop spawning.

I don't care that I overused Ryoma and now he's level 10 promote, I don't care about Mozu being overused against the scary mounted units because of her Beastslayer, that map is *done* and I can move on with the game.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Many a restart
But at last you have conquered
That annoying map

Steam is currently having a sale on Supergiant Games... games. Bastion and Transistor are both real cheap, and if you fancy 'em both, you can get them at the same time along with their soundtracks for an additional (albeit slight) discount.

If you like artsy, isometric action games with cool-sounding narrators talking your ear off constantly, look no further.

I was fighting Seltas, a big insect thing which apparently exists solely to show me how awful I am at Monster Hunter.

In the middle of our battle, he just fucked off and left, and I hadn't thought to bring any paintballs. Then I wasted a bunch of potions looking for him again, and then he killed me for real.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
Ahh, Seltas. His "sneeze" attack (where he swings his mandibles and it sounds kind of like a sneeze) still catches me off guard when I fight him.

If you're having trouble with the game in general, the real tricks are: #1, be patient, and #2, roll out of EVERY attack.

Seriously, though. Monster Hunter isn't like most action games where you jam the attack button until you're about to be hit and then hit the counter/dodge button. You need to pick your opportunities to strike, attack fast and hard, then get the heck out of there, or you WILL be punished.

Side-rolling out of attacks with B usually shortens the amount of time it takes to recover from the attack animations, and gets you out of the way, so you should be doing that often.

It's not an easy game to learn, but it is very rewarding. I hope you stick with it.

Good thing both are fun games.
Indeed. Looking at my post in retrospect, I hope I didn't make it sound like the combat system rip was a bad thing. I fell in love with Arkham City's combat, and when it was tossed on top of a Middle Earth setting with swords, orcs and amazing slow-motion kill-moves, I was more than pleased (though I can't say everyone reacted the same way I did).

Assassin's Creed has no combat system. All you do is hold block and ocassionally hit the attack button.

There is pretty much no similarity between Arkham combat and AC combat, beyond the existence of fighting in the games.

All three are counter-driven systems punctuated by special ability use. Please don't act like either SoM or Arkham require more than clicking a button or countering, please. I've played more than enough of all three games across their entire series to feel comfortable saying that. They're all counter-kill combo fighting systems. SoM just has more "Fuck you" enemies that then invalidate said counters.

Christ, AC has heavies, Arkham has shield guys, SoM has guys just invulnerable to counters. The same combat system flavored three different ways.
Posting to back this up, because it's fact. Shadow of Mordor's combat system was pretty much ripped straight from the Arkham games. You hit X to do a light attack, Hit Y to counter, hit B to stun, follow up a stun with lots of light attacks for a flurry, hold RT and hit X to finish downed enemies... almost everything is exactly the same. Hell, you even have a rapid dagger throwing ability in Shadow of Mordor which is functionally identical to Arkham's batarangs.

It's pretty much Arkham Mordor. Anyone who denies that is lying to themselves.

I still died, but I consider it a win.
JFC blaze, you ALWAYS forget the game name
Pretty sure the game is Blacksea Odyssey.

Etrian Odyssey (4) and Cobalt.

You manage a squad of up to 5 adventuring robots on missions across sidescrolling dungeons, each robot with different abilities that you need to use strategically to succeed. Fights are half turn-based, half real-time; you command your robots one at a time until they have all been given orders, at which point both you and the enemies move simultaneously, and you watch in slow motion as the fighters exchange energy blasts and grenades until one side is left in burnt scraps on the ground.

You also have to map the dungeons yourself, of course, and there are FOEs (F***ing Overpowered Enemies) on every floor which will screw you hard if you don't run the heck away.

Since we're talking a bout Batman games I picked up Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and have been enjoying that. I've never played the Batman games but apparently the combat is very similar. Game seems pretty short though, my progress says I've already done 19 out of 20 story missions, but I already have 20+ hours in it just playing the game.
Shadow of Mordor isn't about the story, its about hunting down that asshole orc who killed you last time and punching him and all his followers in the face. With a sword.

Or branding them to serve you so you can send them at your other enemies. Fun game.
This is relevant.

I am very sad about switchaxe really. It's basically my main weapon, but I like being in axe mode. Kinda wish axe mode got some kind of a buff to make it more appealing than just 'the mode you use when sword mode isn't charged'. Like, if I did more damage when my sword gauge was filled that'd be really cool.
You still have ye olde jam-the-A-button attack which does remarkably good damage and is extremely satisfying when you land lots of hits with it. But yeah, I feel ya, the axe mode is really discouraged because of how much better sword is... which is odd, considering it's called the Switch AXE, not the Switch Sword.

Because I'm curious, what weapons/styles are ya'll thinking of focusing on in MHX/MHGen?

I'm gonna try out Aerial Insect Glaive because it looks silly, and I'm definitely going to be doing a lot of both Guild and Adept style Charge Blade.

Also, Sword and Shield, Guild/Striker/Adept, because of how absurdly good the weapon is now.

Now somebody needs to find some form of bomb-jumping so we can explosively and conveniently propel ourselves hundreds of feet into the air in order to glide long distances.

I know there are fire updrafts, but... those just don't have enough punch to 'em, ya know?
