DF Suggestions / distinguishing artifacts from artifacts from artifacts...
« on: February 14, 2021, 02:11:58 pm »
The pool of artifacts has become a muddy swamp of keepsakes, trophies, heirlooms, relics, etc. How can you tell which ones are the magnum opus of master craftsdwarfs which ones have significant properties, which ones are powerful only to archeologists, and which ones were whimsically named by off-duty soldiers or mercenaries adventurers? How do you tell which ones have personal or factional meaning from the ones that were imbued with the blood, sweat and mania of a determined producer, or the ones imbued with arcane, spiritual or divine power?

DF General Discussion / questions about in-game movies
« on: August 11, 2017, 01:04:22 am »
I tried to capture a sequence in adventure mode with the game's movie utility, but playback only displayed a few flickering rows of characters in a disarranged interface. Are there some requirements taken for granted by those who use this, or does nobody use it because of such requirements?

Can this be used in adventurer mode?  Can this work with graphical tilesets? Does it require a certain resolution or window size?

DF Suggestions / smells like a biome
« on: March 08, 2016, 07:00:23 pm »
A creature with sharp olfactory senses should be able to have a whiff around to determine what fauna resides in the biome. Is there prey worth hunting? What predators already hunt it? They all leave their trace scents. For best results, the creature would need to be on a natural tile, with improved clarity for each natural tile around. Domestic animals in a settled site would be much easier to identify, and tiles with construction or building on them wouldn't reduce ability by as much. If a site contains a predator's (inc werebeast's) natural prey, that predator would hunt or rampage there longer.

DF Suggestions / Troubles that aren't
« on: March 07, 2016, 10:26:36 am »
When the topic of a pesky bandits is fresh in the air, there's no more opportune moment to explain that those bandits won't be troubling anyone anymore. Should there be a need to fish through rumors or histories when a dialog menu referring to the individual already presented, full of options that no one yet has a need for?

Life Advice / jammed burr mill coffee grinder
« on: March 05, 2016, 02:21:26 pm »
After grinding ~2 lbs of beans, I decided to fill the rest of the airtight container I keep it in with a finer grind of the cheap emergency coffee I've been drinking. I apparently underestimated the quantity, and kept trying to grind when the chamber was so full that the coffee was compressed in the chute. After I cleared the chamber and brushed out the chute as well as I could, the grinder wouldn't restart.

I've ground pre-ground coffee in this before, so that can't be a problem. This is only a little past warranty (18 months) but I've seen this model last up to 4 years in a friend's kitchen. How much of this should I clean, how much of it can I clean, to potentially get this working again?

DF Suggestions / guide to structure location
« on: March 05, 2016, 01:17:15 pm »
Could ask creatures to guide your character to a structure, either by name or by general type. Citizens would be more willing to show you around their site than to guide to other locations, though less willing than mercenaries or scouts to lead into a dungeon. Having a guide to a city would make it less tedious to locate temples, taverns, sewers, particular types of shops, markets, warehouses, and libraries. If the structure doesn't exist within the site, you at least learn that.  You could even request a guide to obvious structures like the keep, or wherever the site's seat of power is.

DF Suggestions / manipulation
« on: February 29, 2016, 03:03:08 pm »
If a creature tries to convince another of values they don't share, wouldn't that increase the speaker's Liar skill and the listener's Judge of Intent? This could also satisfy the need to "Cause trouble".

DF Suggestions / descriptive adjectives for voices
« on: February 26, 2016, 08:31:13 am »
To vaguely identify speakers when they can't be seen. Can also add the speaker/singer/chanter's vocal characteristics to a performance.

DF Suggestions / practical prognostication and divination
« on: February 23, 2016, 08:02:58 pm »
I mean prognosticating weather and divining the location of groundwater. They're more an art than magic or science, but valuable skills for prospectors and adventurers nonetheless.

DF Suggestions / hammocks

Easily installed cloth or leather bedding, preferable in some climates, and more practical in certain housing types. Elves would probably use these exclusively.

DF Suggestions / formal duels
« on: February 22, 2016, 02:33:07 pm »
A high respect for law and/or courtesy makes an enraged character less likely to attack a non-hostile without first challenging. By challenging, the initiator isn't attacking out of the blue like an unhinged person, but has the consenting participation of an opponent.

For brawls this doesn't need to be any more formal than one guy saying, "You want to fight?" and the other guy saying "Yeah! (Your mom!)"  The law would be less involved than the values of the participants and observers. Owners of public establishments, such as Tavern Keepers, may have varying house rules: no fighting at all, clean matches, organized sparring, etc.

Higher levels of engagement, up to and including fights to the death, would become more formal, though how these are formalized would vary by the civilization's values. At one extreme, goblin civs may consider all killings, including murders, to be fair duels. Others would require rules of engagement; the conditions required to initiate and conclude the duel; and referees to enforce them, either one agreed on by participants, or a public official required to be in attendance.

DF Suggestions / The value of hospitality
« on: February 22, 2016, 09:17:20 am »
This is actually one of the big ones in world traditions. Greek morality myths in which the gods get pissed enough to smite people for hospitality failure are probably the best known examples, but not the only ones around the globe.

Do you pick up your microwave to put frozen burritos in it?

DF Suggestions / anthologies
« on: February 20, 2016, 08:10:58 am »
To publish multiple unpublished compositions. Could be typed by author or form. If no works are left unpublished, then random selection.

The leaves of a turnip should be cookable.
