DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?

Yeah, I couldn't wait for the answer and tried one in the arena. "Too large for vegetation" and extremely large profile.

From what I can see, Elephant Men don't get any better or worse attributes than humans, but they get worse gaits. Their greatest advantages are mass, base size 201.8k urists, and about that amount in total blood volume. Extremely tough to kill. Gore attack and SWIMS_INNATE are pretty minor compared to those.

My favorite use of stealth is climbing up on top of a roof, laying on my tummy, and sneaking up on bandits until they start to rob someone so I can jump up and tackle them out of nowhere.

Noone expects the Adventurer Imposition!
There's an idea; how much does crawling improve an Elephant Man's visual stealth, and what's their crawling top speed?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Best Misc. Weapon for an adventurer?
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:42:35 pm »
The pick isn't misc weapon, it uses and improves Miner skill in combat. The density of wooden crutches is to low to be good for anything other than cherry tapping someone for fun and humiliation. A player fortress can produce metal crutches, but if worldgen forts produce them, it's probably at a very low frequency.  Bronze and iron shields are solid, heavy and easily obtainable, and they're near enough in impact strength that you can take whichever you find the higher quality for.

If you can handle the encumbrance, there are plenty of high density instruments and furniture. If you're willing to start a fortress to produce something, or use adv-fort, you should try trap components in the best quality materials you can find. From my experience even glass ones are bloody good fun.

1. It certainly does. What's more, if your feet have scratch attacks, using them increases kicker, and they attack as fast as hand attacks. It's slow to increase until your strength comes up. With higher damage output it becomes more conspicuous. If you get a powerful wereform, you'll notice the increase pretty quickly.

Deposited all the books I discovered and authored with scholars at the civ's library. I hope that means they store it in some historical sense, so that instead of having to repeat my stories personally, historical figures will peruse them their damn selves. Yet for good measure I headed back to the only keep my stories wouldn't be interrupted with a bombardment of bloodshed and horribly broken bodies, and related my greatest chronicles. Due to lag, it took ~2.5 RL hours to finish telling about all the megabeasts I killed, but I also inserted peaks I'd climbed, masterful meals I made out of mega meat, and some of the better works I'd authored. A little after I segued into all the night trolls slain by the whole party, everyone passed out simultaneously. So I finished up in a nearby tavern and skipped town. This civ is now a closed chapter.

One disadvantage of being so large is that my visual stealth is horrendous, and the Bandits I've been facing run away screaming for mercy the moment they so much as glimpse me. That doesn't stop me from being able to Sneak up behind them if they're facing another direction however, which brings funny images of a gigantic Elephant Man creeping through forests and quietly sidling up behind people just staring off into space.
That reminds me of an old riddle that's only supposed to be funny to children: "Why do elephants paint their toenails different colors?" "So they can hide in a bag of jellybeans."

So if you don't see an Elephant Man in your jellybeans, that doesn't mean he doesn't see you. You could be seconds away from death.

Life Advice / Re: FDA and antibacterial soaps
« on: January 30, 2016, 12:28:34 pm »
Plain old soap and hot water with scrubbing for at least 20 seconds is your best bet. It's what everyone in the medical fields can agree upon. That and disposable barriers and autoclaves.
It's never 20 seconds, not unless you have a water tap directly connected to a water heater. Realistically, doctors rarely have time to wait for water to heat up; that's why there are Purell dispensers in every room and hallway at the hospital I go to. And I similarly use anti-bacterial soap only when I need to disinfect my hands to handle something quickly.

After a surgery I asked my doctor about using Neosporin for more than a week, and he didn't seem to think it could be either beneficial or harmful. He told me if I was getting good results, which I was, then I should continue.

Paid a visit to my lady former companion in her new meadhal, shared stories, danced and sang. She was still carrying all the gear I left her, but she also still had all her injuries. But when I had seen her in wereform, she looked completely restored.

Also settled into the meadhall was the famous Goblin Swordsman I had tried to recruit earlier, but he couldn't be deterred from his duty. Which was there. Where I tried to recruit him from. But here he was, wandering in search of adventure, and adventure is what I had. I stalled on inviting him while I considered which companion I should dismiss in order to recruit him. I already have four characters crawling up my ass so hard I get knocked over every time I turn around, and with a band so large, what glory can I get? If the companions menu didn't cause a riot in the ranks, I wouldn't be so hesitant.

I know I'm going to lose someone in the savage lands, far away from any potential recruits, so ultimately I decided everyone should get a chance. Let's see how long I can put up with keeping five alive and in functional leathers. Hunting for skins should be a lot more fun in savage lands.

I always sneak and pick the lock. These last 13 tombs, I left my companions in the entry to chat amongst themselves, certainly not being sneaky. Then I locate the sarcophagus and figure out how to lure a companion across its radius and get to the exit before I'm surrounded by animated corpses. Then I bring a companion in, mostly navigating around the traps but some are unavoidable and some pathing AI is bizarrely self-destructive. Then sprint across the room, avoiding the coffin while leading my companion into it, and getting as near to the door out as possible.

If no active mummy, we travel to the next tomb. If the mummy rises, my companion gets the curse, dies pathetically, gets reanimated, and then the mummy homes in on me with my late companion not far behind.

Life Advice / FDA and antibacterial soaps
« on: January 30, 2016, 12:21:02 am »
The FDA had been talking about this for awhile before they announced last year that they were investigating the effectiveness and risks of antibacterial soap. I can guess what they'll say about their effectiveness vs. any other soap. But coming to a conclusion about the potential danger of fostering resistant bacteria has been slow to progress.

Could someone more familiar with the medicine/chemistry explain the likelihood of risk that a topical antibacterial could pose? And what implications would this have for bacitracin?

Not, and it must be stopped by all means at our disposal.

HERESY

I think he means that the inactivity must be stopped. Therefore, it must become active.
@Amperzand: He clouded your mind with a double-negative!

While I was futzing around with my earlier experiments in architecture at this camp, instead of tanning the 40+ skins in my pack, the head of a gray langur animated and stalked my companions. I have no idea how to kill these things, maybe take off every possible facial feature, but those are almost always Impossible to hit and even harder to excise. But it wasn't capable of doing anything other than giving my companions cheap target practice even unto exhaustion. 4 dozen silver bolts, wasted. I hastily tanned the remaining skins, heads first, and traveled off the nearest edge of the site. There's a camp I need never return to.

Passed again through the good desert, and this time got my feather egg contained right. Last time I mistook them for food items, so when I dropped one on the ground, I didn't notice it was liquid until it was all a smear under the pile of of my equipment that emptied out with it. It's a liquid that eats like a meal, so you can use the pool exploit to keep yourself perpetually fed. I'm going to cook with it and see what it does to the meal value. I don't even need to carry jewels and jewelry now, I can just cook something and trade that for anything, everything, and your daughter.

EDIT: I was mistaken about it being a food, but it does add a lot of value to meals. So instead of carrying cash I could just pull one off the stack.

@uzu

I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, since she drops even her own old shoes.
Huh. I assume she has feet if she's wearing socks. If you have dfhack you could try using the companion menu to make her drop everything to sort it yourself. Try taking socks away and putting the boots down, then get her to equip everything from the ground.

I haven't tried this yet, but it would be fun to build a big minecart track through those long rows of werebeast lairs. Just use the 'lair' command so it'll stay put.

Wind power might be available, and if there's a river or brook just offsite of one, you could dig a trench into the site proper and build a waterwheel.

@uzu

sorry, i guess i'm not making myself clear.

she's wearing neither boots not shoes. all she is wearing on feet is socks. if given any other outer footwear be it shoes, sandals, boots, etc. she drops it.
Ah, check if they're the right size for her. If the description doesn't have fitting info, then it's fit for your race.

]Shoes and boots are shaped clothing items, so they both occupy the same layer. She can wear socks or chausses with boots, but not shoes. See here for more detail: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Armor

To clarify, she is not wearing shoes, only socks. when given any shoe type item she jusy drops it.
But the boots are worn, as you stressed in your earlier post. This is why shoes won't be. Shaped item are mutually exclusive per body loc.

1. Again, Does hitting a giant tortoise after it has retracted into it's shell not grant weapon experience? It doesn't seem to for me.

2. Almost all of my deaths are from when a beast larger than I latches on firmly with a bite. What are good ways to escape bite from larger than
1. Obviously not.
2. Break its teeth with a blunt attack. This is easier done before it bites you, afterwards it's kind of a desperation move, but if it's able to bite without teeth it naturally won't work at all.
If you don't have the Observation to predict when it's about to bite, or the defense to evade it, or the accuracy and power to smash its teeth out, then you might should avoid fighting biters bigger than you.
