Other Games / Guild Wars 2
« on: December 17, 2011, 08:58:26 pm »
The game I'm looking forward to most in 2012 (besides DF) and it doesn't even have it's own thread.

First character will probably be a Slyvari Engineer because who says salad can't use guns?

Mostly cinematic trailer
Gameplay trailer featuring a early/mid boss

Skill Loadout Tool Also includes a smaller character creation tool.

Before anyone even thinks about the term "WoW-killer", don't, because that term is just idiotic.

General Discussion / Installing New OS. Need Advice.
« on: June 08, 2011, 10:00:30 pm »
I'm currently using Windows 7 Premium on my desktop which I've had for almost 2 years. Over this time it's gotten bogged down with useless programs and add-ons that I don't use or can't find anymore or are outdated.

Therefore I'm preparing to wipe everything clean and replace the OS with Ubuntu.
However I can't decide if I should replace the OS completely or partition Win7.

The main point of me even wanting to install a new OS is because of all the bloat I've loaded windows with. In the task manager I can see dozens of process that perform functions I have no knowledge of and random files and folders everywhere on my harddrive.

Currently I am leaning towards replacement.
-Most of my activity on the desktop is web browsing and gaming.
-My graphics card is quite good and I'm not sure if it will be fully compatible with Ubuntu. I plan on installing Envy, which should take care of any problems with that.
-I know that I can use Wine to run games that are native to windows, but I'm not sure how well the games perform. I'm very much looking forward to Diablo 3 and GuildWars 2 and if I replace Win7 with Ubuntu I MUST be able to run at least those two games at decent settings without errors or lag.

If I do end up partitioning or even staying with Windows and not installing Ubuntu, I need to know how to "clean" windows to wipe the slate clean and return it to it's pristine, unbloated status. (which is why I'm doing this at all)

So what should I do? Replace, partition, or stay (I would need advice on how to "clean" windows)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
World should be made after the 35th rejection.

The world was generated with several races from the fortress defense mod and some modded creature and weapon files. It probably won't affect the geography laid out by the seed.
[HISTORY_SEED:]
[NAME_SEED:]
[CREATURE_SEED:]
Use random seeds for history, name, and creature. Using the default seeds will result in low megabeast numbers due to dieout.
You might also want to change the embark points, I set it to a high number to test firearm building.

Circled in Red.
Spoiler: Site Location (click to show/hide)

Red = Volcano
Blue = Brook
Green = My Wagon site
Spoiler: Embark Site 5x5 (click to show/hide)

Unfortunately, iron ore levels are relatively low.
The exposed lava is 2 z-levels lower than the surface.
Spoiler: dfprospector results (click to show/hide)
Results are according to the 5x5 embark.

There are actually 3 "volcanoes", 4 if you use the 5x5 embark
Volcano #2 starts in the 2nd cavern layer to the east of the main volcano
Volcano #3 starts in the 3rd cavern to the north of #2
Volcano #4 starts in the northwest corner of the map, in the 3rd cavern layer

DF Modding / Make magma versions of existing workshops
« on: June 01, 2011, 05:15:32 pm »
How do I make a workshop into a magma workshop?

Currently these 2 buildings (from the black powder firearms mod) require fuel for reactions. I could just remove the [FUEL] tag from the reactions correct?
But I would like to create a magma-powered version of both workshops.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

[NEEDS_MAGMA] is what you're looking for in the building file, and then just remove [FUEL] from all of the reactions.

I want 2 separate sets of buildings though, one that is magma powered and another one that's fuel powered.

Would I need to create a duplicate set of reactions that don't have the [FUEL] tag and a duplicate set of magma workshops?

Yes.

So I added the following:

And created a separate set of non-fuel using reactions that take place at the new magma workshops

I backed up and overwrote the raws but I can't find the new workshops anywhere in the build options. Is there something I'm suppose to change to add the new workshops somewhere in there?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Game Freezes on Ghost Haunting
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:01:51 pm »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My game has been crashing consistently whenever this ghostly miller appears to haunt my fortress. He wasn't one of my dwarves and I'm certain he wasn't part of a caravan either.

Any in case my game stops responding either right after the haunting message or right before, when I assume, it's about to appear.

There is literally no time to carve a memorial to advert the haunting since I saved too close to "zero hour".

What can i do to fix this?

I use the Gem Warfare, Black Powder Firearms mods along with ~4 races from the fortress defense mod and I use Ironhand's graphics pack.

DF General Discussion / Why Spoilers?
« on: May 30, 2011, 04:55:18 pm »
Why do we have spoilers?
Why are hell and adamantine and demons spoilers?

In advanced world gen there is an option for demon types, there is an article named Hell on the wiki, dwarves in-game already know what adamantine is.

Why we do keep up this charade? It's like saying the inside of a twinkie is cream then people warn you you're spoiling.

Then there are the people who so ardently defend it, as if spoiling was some crime and they ask persistantly that people put SPOILERS in their thread title.

People talk about forgotten beasts and titans openly, why not hell?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Wandering Elf
« on: May 29, 2011, 12:14:52 am »
The Elven caravan arrived as usual and just in time, because I was running out of booze.

However a siege arrived at the same time. The caravan had 2 traders and one of them along with a horse fell to the invaders.
Now the other elf is safely inside my fortress walls but he is just wandering the halls, and not trading as usual. I can't just magmafy him since he's constantly moving, will he settle down eventually and start trading or do I have to wait until he starves to death?

DF Gameplay Questions / Why doesn't this ramp work?
« on: May 28, 2011, 05:09:55 pm »
Thread title question.

My dwarves refuse to walk up/down this ramp. Depot is listed as accessible so the game thinks it works as a 3 tile wide ramp.

excuse the bad cropping this was done in a hurry.

DF Modding / Need help with dfprospector

Moving to dfhack thread

I've been trying to get back into DF again after a few month long hiatus and I've spent the better part of 8 hours trying to gen a world with either:

A volcano near a canyon with a river. (As in the volcano mouth is near-ish to the river, or in the cliff-side)
or
A volcano without a steep rise in elevation, with or without a river

Flux would be nice in either case, but not strictly necessary. Savage/Evil would be ideal. Vegetation and temperature doesn't matter.

If anyone knows of an embark with these details I would greatly appreciate it. Or if you know certain parameters in the PerfectWorld tool that would help generate this, it would be appreciated too.

I was hasty in reading and I didn't notice the op talk about materials.

Materials do affect bolts/ammunition. It behaves similarly to weapon materials.

Wood/bone can damage unarmored enemies, but metal ammunition is recommended against armored enemies.

AFAIK quality does not affect bolts. High quality weapons grants a boost to the abilities of a dwarf using the weapon. The bolts fired out of the crossbow don't rely on a skill so quality won't boost anything.

General Discussion / Vitamin String Quartet
« on: December 27, 2010, 04:05:19 pm »
They do covers of songs in string instruments. They are amazing.

Samples
Take Me Out
Through the Fire and Flames My favorite
Knights of Cydonia
All Along the Watchtower
Viva La Vida

They covered many many songs, bands, musical genres. Not rap though, thankfully.
If you can't find a song, they can also be called Vitamin Records String Quartet.

Add a link to covers of theirs that you like so we can all point and laugh.

Is there any way to tweak the worldgen to create surface magma pools or volcanoes without cliffy terrain?
But the thing i want to avoid is my dwarves hitting magma a few z levels underground because the magma sea is too close to the surface.

I'm trying to play a flat map and I like volcano embarks, but I don't like a towering volcano in the middle of my desert/wasteland/savanna.

I use the PerfectWorld so any info regarding how to use that to do this is good too.

DF Modding / Eliminating Cats as Pets
« on: December 19, 2010, 05:30:20 am »
I don't know much about modding so I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

Is there any way to mod the raws so cats are no longer able to become pets/adopt owners?
Also, along with this, remove any possible preferences for dwarves admiring cats for "aloofness"

Basically I want my cats to be vermin hunting machines and nothing else.

On an unrelated note, whats a simple way to nerf whips? Either by changing the weapon size or attack attributes. I heard something about multiplying/dividing it's size by 10?

Creative Projects / Need Help Making a .gif (Read Details)
« on: December 05, 2010, 04:08:27 am »
Ok, so my avatar. I love it.

The thing is it's way too tiny. I used an online gif maker to create it from an mp4 file.

I'm trying to make a bigger one. at least 424x240. hopefully 848x480

I need a program that can do it with many jpegs (149), or directly from an mp4 file.

I have found programs that "claim" to do this. Problem is, these programs cost 50$, are often laden with malware, and I am unable to find......c_R-a~c*ks for these programs. Free programs exist, but they cycle through the jpeg frames MUCH too slowly, making the resulting gif look. like. crap.

Does anyone know of a program that can do what I'm looking for?
something not involving GIMP or photoshop or anything with a command line.

Had no idea what forum this was suppose to go in. I guess this is "creative" and a "project" or maybe it should be moved to life advice.
