DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most Anticlimatic Battles Ever
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:34:29 pm »
I wanted to make a epic battle between a Dwarf and a Goblin in Object testing mode. So I spawned both with good skillz and weapons, only to discover that, instead of a dwarf, I had spawn a Demon. There was no fight.
I would like to inquire as to the methodology you employed in order to produce such an effect.
I used the highly utilitous resource commonly referred to as the Object Testing Arena.
But that cannot be! I am familiar to a certain degree with the Object Testing Arena and am at the conclusion that such a feat as spawning demons is impossible within the aforementioned Object Testing Arena.
Is that so? I was previously unacquainted with that conclusion.
I would like to take this propitious opportunity to shout in a very loud tone indeed, "LOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER THE GATES!!"
I outright refuse! I and the entity of prior quoters whose opinions I represent would greatly prefer to continue speaking in this fashion.
I am frustrated that you did not recognize the reference of which I was producing. I would also like to take the opportunity to promote the continued extended quotation of this structure commonly referred to as a "quote pyramid".
I will comply with what you have requested, and I am delighted at the notion!
I am in shock and horror at this monstrous structure. I would like to inquire any readers as to what action I have just committed, and what the ultimate consequences of said action might be.
I shall respond to your inquiry, Niggy. My response is to a highly approving effect. You have committed the action of producing a quote pyramid, one of which I appraise as possessing a masterful quality. I would also like to add that it simply bristles with tremendous javelins of glorious awe.
Now that's more like it. Roundin' up the neighborhood quote pyramidsts, Gnauga-style.

In hindsight, this is astonishingly appropriate for a discussion on anti-climatistic events.

I would've sigged that, but it's way too big. Also, seems there's a second-generation pyramid here.

Nah, still good ol' first. But your summation is one of the funniest things I've seen lately regardless.

Buy all their rare animals. All of them.
When they bring cloth steal everything.
They will come back with more animals.

Or that.
You see, elves regard animals as low-value, and cloth as high-value. If they like you, they will bring more cloth. If not, more animals.

It's your own decision. You can attack them and other caravans and get into a war with elves, or just to steal their stuff. Or just steal their stuff by deconstructing the depot (which still counts as stealing, and will still provoke war sooner or later, as far as I know).
Alternatively, trade with them, buy barrels, booze and lots of wood and cloth from them, as well as rare aboveground plants, in exchange for stone crafts or other junk you may have.
If you hate elves, well, the choice is obvious.

I remember seeing the Hills of Vomit while checking around a newly-genned world. Sounds like a swell place.

Try keeping your dwarves indoors for a few years, then let them out. You will have a mini-version of those all for yourself.

THIS IS A MASTERPIECE PYRAMID BY NIGGY. IT MENACES WITH SPIKES OF AWESOME.

My first ambush, all the goblins rushed my woodcutter... right into my cage traps, a few seconds later that same woodcutter is shived by a goblin thief.

Hilarious. Bloody hilarious.

Just had a huge Anti Climactic battle...

The Fifth Battle of Cloisteredwood.

The Army is under strength, replacements have still not been found for the six dead at the fourth battle of Cloisteredwood. A huge great Goblin force arrived, about 55 total, up against my 38 dwarf soldiers. In the Fourth battle of Cloisteredwood, if it hadn't been for a mad war dog the fortress would of been over run, and that was only 40 goblins.

The goblins approached in 4 groups.... the first was ambushed by the north tower, three go down. The rest run away. Kind of set the tone. Another group was fired at by the walls, two died, the rest ran away. Another group ran away BEFORE it got to the walls. The last group was the only one that managed to get near me, but my champion swordsdwarf killed all of them. End of siege.

Seriously, I was expecting like a huge battle..... stupid Goblins. Excluding the group that attacked the gate I count 8 dead goblins, and at least 1 was wounded. (With the group at the gate that'd be 21 dead Goblins).

Chicken goblins are the best kind of goblins, after the ones plummeting to their doom.

Especially since magma is available everywhere via magma sea.

Random fortress name: "Longcat"

Now I just need to find a way to build fortress Tacgnol on the other side of the river.

I tried to do Ceilingcats. the best I could get was Catceilings.

'One does not simply drive Tankcat into the Goblin fortress...'

anyway, I have these as river names:

Lunchnightmare
savage tummy (I lie how this one was right nearby the one above)

Gerbilskewers
Floodpolished the dangers of Dating
Amuseache the Ears of Sucking
Violentbarb the Tactical Lard

these two seem to go together as well:
The Cruel Girdle
Crevicetugs

Floodspoiled the Dangers of Dating should've been right next to Inkstunt the Convenient Baby.

... I just got a dwarf worshipping... something that could very well be the epitome of this thread.

Orrun Clawdrilled the Awe-inspiring Mine, a rotting female hoary marmot goddess of mountains, death, war and fortresses.

A gal in my newest fortress is named 'Sackbored'. Ironically, she has every labour that my fortress needs enabled.

It's been 7 years and I've still got no magma. :D

Just dig straight down. 100 z-levels after, you have magma all set up for the forges and smelters and furnaces. Just make sure to build the impassable tiles over access halls, there're some very !!Fun!! creatures down there.

Just breached the third cavern layer for the first time, and found the magma sea through a magma pool - the third level is only 2z higher, at -105. It was the magma sea I was looking for, since I embarked on an area without a volcano, and I can't bear preparing/using fuel for something other than steelmaking. And yes, ever since I started playing DF I never tried to dig deeper than a few z-levels, or generally much deeper than the ground level; most of my fortresses've been dug into hillsides or mountainsides or were stacked inside mountains at varying z-levels.
Dug straight down, and managed to breach all three cavern layers on my way. Had to circumvent the second (went right through the wall of the first) and will now have to circumvent the third, but I think the magma sea is worth it. Time to set up the industry.

Added: And thank goodness that I breached it through the ceiling. There's a blind cave ogre in the cave next to the one I breached.

Avoiding a doublepost:
I re-embarked on the same site through force-quitting after finding a more-or-less uninterrupted pillar of rock down to the magma sea, and dug straight for it again. Then I dug out a hall for the magma industry... but it was very slow due to 'Digging designation cancelled: warm stone located'. And tiresome. But now it's done and I will soon have magma forges and smelters up and running.
I decided to build the fort somewhere around the 50 z - there's an underground lake not far below that, which is great as I want a water source, and a walloffable part of a cavern not far away for the farms. Closer to the smelters and not far from the surface, too.
The caverns are presenting their contents to me pretty quickly. I've already seen a cave crocodile in the planned water source, a reacher (a thing I've never seen or heard of before) and a giant olm. Also magma crabs in the magma sea. There's more to come, I'm sure.

Edit: yeah, the original text should go to another thread. Moved it to 'What's going on in your fort?'

The new text:
Breaching a cavern. Period.
