General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: February 09, 2020, 03:06:11 pm »
So, as I've mentioned once or twice, I've had to move house.
Ended up deciding to drive up from Melbourne to northern NSW with my dad, and so much of yesterday was spent driving through fire-ravaged rural Australia. Crazy to see how many buildings were lost, crazy to see how close the fires came to many of the surviving ones, and crazy to think just how touch-and-go the defense efforts would have been.

Now, though, the rain has come, forecast to continue heavily for days - sure, it should be enough to put out the last pockets of bushfire, but it's also just in time to wash away all the loose soil left around tree roots that have burnt away.
Sydney's flooding, various other places are flooding, and it's anyone's guess if we'll be able to get north today. Haha, fun times.

Nooooo it's an opportunity for conversation!  Well, once (if) the banal back-and-forth runs out.  If my Gma tolerated her husband despite being a very different kind of Christian, surely we can agree to disagree with our loved ones about things?
That is a good point. Social media and its constant voicing of opinions certainly can put a spanner in the works when it comes to relationships.
I'm pretty sure there was a time within living memory when two people could discuss their differing views and beliefs without their conversation being a predetermined disaster from the start.

This post may not make much sense, but oh well I'm tired. Various things have made me mildly upset today but I haven't time to list them all.
Good night Bay12!

Hot and uncomfortable under the doona, yet the parts of me that aren't seem to be cold. I have a sniffle. Ugh.
I had hoped to get a bit more sleep.

My dad is here and has busted out his guitar, and now my housemate is jamming with him. That's pretty cool and all and I actually feel rather proud to have such a talented father, but I still loathe myself for not playing an instrument.
No real reason not to, either. I'm just useless.
Should be happy times but instead I'm having a Big Sad.

Best translation I found is: cling together, swing together (from a rope)
Wow, that got dark. Hahaha.

When you think you've acquired a new romantic interest, but then a quick glance through their social media page(s) reveals some rather dumb political views.

Still cute, though. Argh.
Maybe in future I just shouldn't look at the social media of anyone I'm attracted to...

Honestly, sometimes it feels like half of bay12 is on the spectrum, most undiagnosed.
Buncha tards. Myself included.

So, today I'm supposed to be moving house and my plan was to spend yesterday and today finishing up my packing, buuuuuut... turns out Bastardizer were playing last night.

Couldn't not go, ya know?
Ended up writing myself off quite thoroughly. Spent about a hundred bucks, which is a huge amount even by my standards. Hot damn. Also I'm not sure my peepee worked when its services were required, but I got a friend request afterwards so it can't have been too bad. The gig itself was friggin' great.

Most importantly though, holy shit I am hungover.
Surprised I even made it home, but I'll be even more surprised if I get anything done today.

Well, there was at least one bushfire in Melbourne's outer northern suburbs, Greensborough and such, that I believe fell under the umbrella of the recent fire crisis.

But yeah, the amount of Australia directly threatened by the fires has been greatly exaggerated by the media. I doubt we'll all have to "flee the country by boat" as I've seen some folks joke, haha.
People who've been affected indirectly by the fires, now that's a lot more common. Whether you know people who lost their homes or the smoke and ash affects your breathing (asthma squad represent! Maybe that's part of the reason why mine has been getting worse lately...) or you just weep for the huge loss of native wildlife, well it's pretty common to be affected in some way.

For me personally, I think one of the worst parts was seeing photos of some destroyed town and, amongst the rubble, a beautiful old brick chimney standing as a last reminder of whatever historic building it was attached to. :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 06, 2020, 08:26:16 am »
Oh, crikey.
This fort has been slowly falling apart for quite some time, since my main goal was to dig out this big impressive tower/castle from the rock with a chasm around it and as such I didn't pay too much attention to other, more temporary concerns.
Unfortunately I screwed up my semi-megaproject beyond repair, so I cobbled together a really crude little mini-fort up on the northern edge of the map and my dwarves divided their time between that and the outbuildings from the intended castle.

I'd been meaning to retire this shambolic excuse for a fortress for a while, but I always got sidetracked dealing with something else. Just when I was about convinced that it was time to leave these poor dwarves to their own devices and start anew, a Vile Force of Darkness arrived.
Uh oh.

Looking at the attackers with the game paused, though, their force didn't seem too threatening. A couple of goblins, an elf... yeah, even my cruddy makeshift military could probably take them on, I thought. I stationed my two melee squads sort-of in the centre of the shacks and hovels near the abandoned construction site, with the tavern between them and the invaders. (I also intended for the militia commander - a skilled marksdwarf in a squad of her own since I hadn't got around to training or equipping any others - to be positioned nearby to fire on them as they advanced, but the lazy b**** decided it was a good time to go update her outfit on the other side of the map. Probably a prudent move on her part, as it turns out...)

As they came slowly towards us, a few more attackers filed onto the map behind them, and my heart skipped a beat - an ampersand!

Tl;dr: seemingly underwhelming goblin raiding party brought their much-tougher friends and swiftly stomped the absolute bejeezus out of my unsuspecting dwarven rabble just as things were looking like they might work out in our favour.

I actually feel kinda bad for the visitors showing up to visit this tavern they'd apparently heard good things about, only to find themselves wading through piles of splattered corpses to find the doors locked tight from the inside - and that's if they're lucky and don't catch the attention of it!

Edit: after saving everyone by digging the aforementioned tunnel, said miner (my favourite surviving dwarf by far) decided to just wander out in the open and get inevitably killed, even ignoring my orders when I drafted him and told him to gtfo. Ugh. I wish there was a way to actually restrict dwarves to their burrows!

I've been lazy as heck lately for various reasons I doubt I could even list, but I seem to have had an unexpectedly intense leg workout yesterday in the process of doing some weeding along the side of the house.
Not entirely sure how it happened, I guess it's because of how at times I was crouching down, grabbing a particularly stubborn chunk of plants at the base and then extending my legs as I tugged them out? I have pretty sore arse/thigh muscles today in any case, and I can't remember having done anything else unusual with them, so yeah.

Probably not a muscle group(s) I exercise very often, apart from the occasional set of squats which are unfortunately among the exercises I've been neglecting the most lately. My arms did their fair share of pulling and digging during the experience, and they aren't noticeably sore.

Now, hopefully I can find the time and motivation to do some actual, intentional exercises tonight before dinner. We'll see.

Hope you manage to get some rejuvenating sleep! That does sound lovely, and don't beat yourself up about "failing" your family - that's absurd. Everyone needs to unwind sometime. Else they'd wind up gradually fraying their nerves or cracking entirely, and that's a much bigger issue than getting drunk every so often.

Anyways, I still have a lot of packing to do, but I kind of want to go grab another bottle of ginger ale to go with the last of this cheap whiskey. Or, there is also a gig on tonight with a couple of my favourite local bands, which I believe is free - but I don't think I can justify going out when I still need to get my stuff packed and my room clean in preparation for moving the day after tomorrow.

General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol thread

Perhaps at this point the only thing I can hope for is the old "No wars have ever been fought between two democracies" maxim to kick in, when all the other democracies of the world realize that America is no longer a democracy, and they come to the conclusion that having the world's hegemony be a shitty corrupt dictatorship is too large a risk to take, and so just team up to gangstomp us into fucking dust.
Now I'm not defending the ridiculous concept of democracy by any means, but saying the country's "no longer a democracy" because of this is a bit of a stretch.

As for your second paragraph... well, I'm not sure why you'd want to miss out on that, assuming such an event is going to happen within our lifetimes.
