DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Kung Fu Dwarves
« on: February 06, 2020, 02:44:23 am »
Sounds pretty great. Unarmed combat can be surprisingly brutal.
I'm actually quite intrigued by the idea of having everyone do everything...

Question, though: how do you reliably get dwarves to spar? I thought I knew the trick to it, but my current fort has no sparring happening so I must be misremembering.

Dear Ingish Nishromek,
I greatly appreciate all your hard work beating troublesome dwarves into submission in your new role as Captain of the Guard, but did you really have to jump that performer in the mayor's bedroom? The mayor's been through enough lately without his room getting some impromptu blood-and-teeth redecoration. Hell, it looks like when you kicked her teeth out blood sprayed all the way across the room onto the bed! I notice you didn't put your hand up to clean up after yourself, either.

On a brighter note, this incident has made me realise that the performer in question actually lacks any performance skills whatsoever. It seems I may have accidentally given the tavern residency to the wrong dwarf entirely. Whoops. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, Ingiz. Now carry on.

(Edit: my bad, I somehow had 'misc' labours turned off in the skills screen.)

you're moving because of the fires or...?
Oh no, nothing like that. My housemates have just decided to move on after being here three years and, seeing as I'm not even on the lease, I've little choice but to find a new home myself. They gave me plenty of notice and all that, it's just kind of my thing to leave stuff to the last minute, especially when I have open, non-time-sensitive options as I do in this case.

I'm thinking the most sensible option is to just go stay with my Dad (who is driving down to take me and my belongings wherever I decide to go) in rural New South Wales, at least for a while. He has suggested as much, even clarifying that I could just stay for a couple of months if I wanted.
Then I'll be sort-of in between the two other places I'd like to live (Brisbane and Melbourne), so whatever I decide at a later date I could go from there. I dunno... it certainly seems to be the most logical option on paper. Not sure what I would do for work (or lack thereof) in his little town, though, and to get most anywhere I'd either need a lift or to catch a bus, since I don't drive - and who knows how frequent or reliable the buses are up there.
Actually, that's something I should look into now.

Still, I am loathe to leave my social life and the widely-varied, healthy music scenes of Melbourne. Also a good friend very kindly offered to rent me an affordable room just on the other side of the city, which is a pretty amazing opportunity not to take up. And of course I could always move back in with mi madre, who is currently looking to move to a new place herself, but of course whenever I stay with her I lead a horribly sedentary lifestyle and we end up quarreling quite a bit. She has cats and a dog, though, all very cute, so that's a plus.

Anyway, I'm rambling here. Going to drink this Monster, maybe google those bus times, procrastinate for a bit (always) and then hopefully throw myself back into packing.

So bloody stressed. I now have two days in which to finish packing. Naturally, in a time like this when I have such important, pressing stuff to do, productivity is at an all-time low and I have gotten back into DF.

I still haven't even decided where I'm moving to out of the various options available to me.

Well yeah, reading about that was how I made this discovery.
'Twas in a Reddit thread about worst movies and someone mentioned how Travolta made it as a tribute to his favourite science fiction author/prophet/cult leader. I really want to watch that hot mess now, in any case.

Preeeeeetty funky.
I once saw this dude headline this crazy rave on a boat in the Maribyrnong River. What a time. Not sure I took in all that much of his performance at the time, but for some reason I looked him up recently and his musical output is often pretty great. This EP alone has a whole bunch of bangers.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father, or mother, or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest
For he’s with you, clear to the end
And you’ve passed your most difficult, dangerous test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
Phwoar, that's quite a poem. Seems like words to live by.

I looked the man in the glass in the eye, and he told me to eat my mushrooms.

*Days pass*

Eventually, the mushrooms bloom. It is beautiful. Serene. Colorful.

Tasty.
I'm a little annoyed that this is labeled as "kids content", forbidding me from adding it to a playlist.

I found out the other day that John Travolta is a scientologist.

Finally digging into Shogun by James Clavell. I found a copy in my father's house and read the first chapter - I was a bit dubious at first, but past that I have really started getting into it.
Oh, I have a copy of that somewhere, unless somebody got rid of it. Not sure it ever especially grabbed my attention (I guess I was dubious, too), but maybe I should read it sometime.

Started reading Grandes Sertões: Veredas.

It's a bit hard to read due to the style, but it's a classic so I'll give it an honest chance.
That looks kinda fascinating! It's a shame that, from what I've read, its style doesn't really carry across well upon translation, but I wouldn't mind tracking down the best English version and giving it a try sometime. Also, I was reading about that period of time and the activities of cangaceiros not long ago and I'm pretty sure I'd planned on reading a book about Lampião at some point.

Oh, Lovechild, that was wonderful!
I clearly don't check this thread as often as I should, but well done. I hope you recovered nicely from any resultant alcohol poisoning.

Now, who's going to bring Drunkfort into the new version? Or shall we just continue on in the old one?

I'm reading The Shipping News, by... Annie Proulx, I believe the name is.

Pretty sure I've read other stuff since I last posted in here, but I'm a li'l drunk and I just want to rave about this book. I was loving it pretty much from the first chapter.
It's like a perfect book for me. A mixture of the often-bleak minuteae of everyday existence, presented in abstract prose that is beautiful in its starkness, adventure in a strange, sometimes inhospitable foreign place, a deep delve into human nature, family and emotions without ever waxing philosophical or dragging on in the least, a fascinating setting (described in just enough detail) whose inhabitants keep memories of their land's past close to their hearts and tell stories of it even as the modern age forges ahead leaving them behind, and, well, a relatable, hopeless goof of a protagonist with a good heart and a smooth brain.

I don't know, a lot of these words of description I came up with when I'd first started reading this book and I probably didn't get my points across nearly as eloquently as I'd hoped to, but still.
It just keeps getting better, too. Can't believe I'd never even heard of this author.

I often have kidney beans+chickpeas with pasta. Mainly because they (along with 'fu) are my go-to ingredients to make a decent meal out of instant noodles or rice.
