DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Broken nose but no trip to the doc
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:08:01 am »
Medical care seems kind of random. Depending on your staff, hospital location, and dwarves, they may go see them for a scratched finger; or if they have broken limbs but can still move, they'll ignore medical treatment.

If you really want them to go to the doctor, you'll have to give them a worse injury. A couple of pokes with a menacing spike should do the trick.

Dwarf Fortress: Where the cure for a broken nose is a spear through the chest.

so new fort...and my embark party gets ambushed by a troll (cave embark) about a month in:2 dead...rest to follow from serious tantrum spiral.
I was resigned to restarting but thought id let it play out anyway....so down to one dwarf who's trying to beat up the last war dog: dwarf bleeds to death......waiting for the end.....

BUT it seems that migrants arrived at precisely the same moment...so here i am with 7 new dwarfs and bunch or corpse's.

I like to think as these guys as team B..that didn't get picked for the expedition..and they got there revenge by sabotaging the first team. mwhahahaha.

PS: this was a new world gen...and all bar 400 dwarfs are dead from a few random titan rampages....
i embarked as close to one of the two remaining mountain homes as feasible hoping this affects migration.

i recently had a fb (golden winged slug) chase a miner for about 5 min's. when he finally caught him the miner took two swings..severing a wing with each swing he then continued running...conveniently the reason he had caught him was he got chased into a basement...so whilst the slug was ko'ed i had the miner remove the stairs behind him... :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Getting Marksdwarves to train
« on: July 04, 2011, 01:12:17 am »
2) Equipment: Marksdwarf squad set to use "Individual choice: ranged." Fortress has plenty of crossbows, ammo, and quivers. Squad is set to 1000 bolts for combat, 200 for training. Only 1 or 2 dwarves actually have bows that they use (I used some goblins for target practice - 1 dwarf shot while the others stood there). What am I overlooking?

I find restricting hunters ammunition sometimes works. either drop it to 10 or restrict to wood or bone or something, moving the squads to metal. works quite often...not always but often, in getting them to equip bolts. x-bows...if they don't pick up from indiv. choice i move to specific weapon.

...or an arrow to the chest.... ;)

if fantasy fiction has proved anything its that a dragons natural enemy is the underrated fledgling adventurer....warrior kings may fail: but a peasant with toothpick wins everytime.

I think you can tweak the world gen parameters to get more volcanoes but I don't know how.

alter min number of volcanoes in the advanced parameters...be prepared for many rejections if you set it too high tho. (that's just how i do it...probably more efficient ways)

read somewhere earlier, as said above, the armies form nice neat queue's with the head of the ques fighting, when one dies the next takes its place and it starts all over again. hence why 1 dwarf can hold an entire army if he's good/lucky/dwarfy enough.

Hmm... I bet war Minotaurs with ☼Adamantine war-hammer☼s would be pretty awesome.

Oh yeah, I also caught an Ettin. Just saying. I thought they needed to be knocked unconcious or something to be caught in cage traps, but all these guys just walked into them.

semi-mega beasts don't all have trap_avoid (I think) cause i've caught ettin's before.
