DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DF2010 WorldGen "Cookbook" Thread
« on: February 04, 2011, 09:11:23 pm »
Deepest apologies for keeping you all waiting,it's definitely worth it though.

- Obsidian EVERYWHERE
- Flux(marble)
- Waterfall(drops a dozen z levels)
- Volcano surrounded by enough flat land
- trade with all civilizations
- Half untamed broadleaf,half untamed conifer(all warm)
- All of this within 4X3

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Location of site EDIT cursor doesn't show up in the image, but the location is in the palm tree tile that is diagonal bottom right to the volcano tile near the water(you are relatively near the site when you open up the map),also,I genned this in 31.16 if it makes any difference(31.18 is very unstable for me and causes massive lag after a couple of years)

Just genned a world with a volcano surrounded by flat land(untamed wilds temp broadleaf/conifer) and,get this,a river with a waterfall that drops a few Z levels into a large basin.Contains flux and obsidian, all civs. Can't get any better than this.Post if you want it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dragons and worldgen?
« on: January 20, 2011, 05:19:49 pm »
The wiki states that "Dragons are the largest creatures in the game, and grow into their adult size of 25,000,000 after 1000 years"

Does this mean that genning a world at year 200 will yield smaller/weaker dragons?Because that's what I did,and a dragon was easily dispatched with a single spear blow to the head. Will genning a world after 1000 years get me full sized, powerful dragons?

DF Gameplay Questions / Region Wildlife?
« on: January 02, 2011, 05:54:39 pm »
I have a question about the wildlife that occur in different regions(savage, calm, etc.),the wiki is not too clear on it.As an example, the wiki states that unicorns appear in good tropical shrublands. My question is,will ONLY unicorns appear?Or unicorns in addition to the standard wildlife?

unless you put a hatch over the pit, they'll see the cyclops and be afraid of it.

What if I chain it?
If that does nothing,if I put a hatch over it,can I somehow rig the hatch to open as soon as something falls on top of it?I've never actually used a hatch.

If I make a pit of cyclops below my moat(to eat up all of the goblin/clumsy elephant corpses,or to finish off those unlucky enough to survive the fall),will the dwarf going by the pit be scared?Would it trigger the "run away" response and cause them to drop whatever they are doing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Kill order not canceling?
« on: December 17, 2010, 08:42:13 pm »
Alright,so I sent all 4 of my dwarfs in a squad to kill a giant. They do it,but after they kill it they just stand around.I look at the squad, there is a flashing red "kill [insert giant's name here]".The cancel order button is shaded out,and so does nothing.Dwarf respond to other orders(move, kill other creature) but always go back to the giant's corpse and display the flashing kill order. How do I cancel the order?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Changing borders for visible space?
« on: December 10, 2010, 05:54:28 pm »
Started a new game, but the mountain I want to mine is all the way to the right of the visible gameplay map.I mine about 20 spaces, but can't mine anymore due to being unable to scroll to the right(edge of map has been reached). How do I shift the visible/playable area of the map?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Zoo?
« on: December 09, 2010, 05:23:13 pm »
What if you dug your zoo so that only exit is an up ramp blocked by a locked floor hatch.
You could then have another floor hatch with no ramp underneath that was marked as a pit zone.
You could then pit your collection, then they can pathfind unseen by your dwarves.

That sounds like it might work.Anyone every tried it?I'm going to attempt it anyways. Thanks for all the responses.

hmm..OK so it is impossible to have the creatures roaming free without causing some serious disturbance?

I don't have useful answers for you, but just so we're clear on one thing:

If you CAN put goblins in a zoo? It is no longer a Zoo.  It is an amusement park or carnival.  Zoos don't have games like 'betcha can't hit him with a rock' and 'poke the POW with sticks'

So dwarves would be hostile to the goblins?I'd rather do this for my own collecting/catologuing purposes anyways,so is possible to make the wildlife containment center forbidden to dwarves?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Zoo?
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:47:12 pm »
Just started getting comfortable with the actual mechanics of this excellent game yesterday.I'm in my second year, and I notice about a dozen animals in my meeting place, along with goblins and wild animals in my animal stockpile(caged,of course).I want to make a zoo,but I ask myself how I would do this.Do I create an enclosure out of blocks for each animal? How would I get them into this enclosure in the first place? Can goblins be safely put into a zoo,or will they scare all of the dwarves? Thanks in advance.
