DF Adventure Mode Discussion / New to adventure mode

So I have played df fortress mode on and off for years. This patch and the last one seems to have added quite a lot to adventure mode and I'd like to take a stab at it finally. I have a few questions going in though.

1.Is it better to Gen a world with a lot of history or little history to make my own?

2.Should I play a fortress first or something to add to my adventure? I've read you can revisit your past forts in the same world.

3.Is it possible to do an adventure, and maybe retire him and start a new fort in the same world, and then retire that and resume on that adventurer and find the fort? If not can I make as many new adventurers as I want on a world?

4.once I start a character what's the best way to go about starting? Do I find a settlement and try to find a quest or something? Or is it more just wandering around and killing to improve stats?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Government questions

So is there any point to becoming a barony, or getting a king/monarch? Also how do you go about getting a king and baron? I read on the wiki you need to donate extra crafts or a certain wealth to the traders for it to happen, but is that all you have to do and it happens automatically or? If there isn't much point atm does toady plan to expand on that system somehow?

DF Gameplay Questions / What is the difference betweeen quern and millstone?

This probably sounds stupid, but both buildings on the wiki say they grind things into flour, etc. So what is the difference between these two workshops exactly? What's funny is I have I played this game a lot, but never really used either building in my forts. I was just glancing over the workshops and figured I would try using some stuff I normally don't. Thanks for any help!

I'm just curious to see what is being added or changed in the new update that's due soon. I don't see a list anywhere, and I don't really want to scroll through all the news posted on the site for the last year since I played. Or if someone is kind enough to let me know here that would be great :).

So for some reason it says my trade depot is not accessible? I am following along on Captain Ducks tutorials, and his is accessible and looks the same?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So any way to attack goblin strongholds?

When embarking I see massive goblin bases, and after sometime they obviously siege and attack your fortress. Is it possible to attack them from your own fort somehow? Or is it possible to embark on a goblin stronghold with military dwarfs and few essentials to make an outpost and slowly take over or something? If not that would add an interesting dynamic to the game and history :).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Any way to slow down immigrants?

I am working on my first fort since a very long time ago, and I don't remember having an issue with tons of immigrant dwarfs. I am already at 58 in spring of year 2? I have half of them just standing around 90% of the time with nothing to do, and more waves just keep piling on. I was wondering if there is a way to slow down immigration to my fort before I can no longer keep them fed?

I see the name for the dwarf Urist referenced a lot around here, along with that lengthy thread above full of funniness. I was wondering where that originated from? I would post this in that thread, but it seems to be a game so didn't want to be off-topic.

DF Gameplay Questions / Returning player looking for updated tutorials

Hey all, I played DF a bit in the past but never really got into it to much(made a fort that fell to goblins and melancholy from what I remember, and did some adventure mode quests along with some other forts a long time ago I cannot even remember). After playing Gnomoria for the last few weeks and basically beating it I have a desire to give DF another shot because of the depth of gameplay, and I noticed a new version should be coming soon. I figured I would try and get a jump start and relearn how to play. I last played on version 31.25(still have it on my HDD) over a year and a half ago, and would like to watch some updated tutorial videos if anyone has made any? The videos above I remember watching through when I started playing a few years ago lol(have come and gone a few times other than just the 31 patch). I also remember having some trouble understanding the video creator. Obviously there has been a few updates since then, and I would love to watch through a set of current video tutorials(or even a playthrough with good in-depth descriptions for things). I am thinking about just downloading the newest lazynoobpack to get started as well, as I would definitely want to use a good tileset and a few mods to help out.

Thanks for any guidance to the right direction for my new adventures :).

*edit* I just noticed that the text tutorial author above has written a book that seems to be $17, is it worth that price? Seems a little steep for a guide, but if it's kept updated and walks you through the game it may be worth it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Zoom to

Is there some way to turn off zooming to when traders or migrants arrive? It's very annoying, as it takes me 5-10 minutes to find where my fort is again. Or if you can't is there a way to zoom back to my fort easily?

I am having issues with making enough food at the moment, I keep getting migration waves and cannot make enough farms(for some reason out of all 9 waves I only have the one farmer I started with still). He is busy on 3 plots of farmland and I cannot make anymore with no more farmer dwarfs. So I noticed I have a ton of animals running around, have no clue where they all came from but they are all tamed. Is it possible to set a few dwarfs to slaughter some and cook them? I assume that's what the butchery would be for, but how do I set a dwarf to kill certain excess animals and take them to the butcher after I build it? I want to keep a few cats, and my war dogs around but don't much care for anything else.

I have lost about 8 dwarfs so far due to hunger and thirst, so needing to boost up my food/drink supplies quickly. Thanks for any tips :D.

Hey brand new here, and following along a tutorial. While following along I have a decent fort going, with a farm and workshops. However dwarfs are starting to die from dehydration? The tutorial has not explained anything about getting or needing water, how do I go about correcting this?

Well been following along in the written tutorials to figure this game out, got to the end of chapter 4. While working on my wall my fortress was apparently invaded by kobold/goblin thieves, at this point in the tutorial it has not described anything like this or how to remove them? I even looked ahead a bit(a chapter or two), and don't see anything about it. How do I remove them, they keep interrupting dwarves working and stealing stuff from stockpiles?

Alright this is going to sound really stupid lol, but I have been following along with the video and written tutorial and made it to chapter 5 or so. I have already learned a lot and so far am already addicted lol. But when I try to exit the game I only have one option when hitting esc, "Abandon Fortress." After selecting this I get:

How do I exit without deleting my saved games so far lol? Those symbols make no sense, and I cant use like alt+arrow key or shift+arrow etc to highlight other options. I have been quitting by just ending the task in task manager, but surely there is a better way?
