DF Modding / All attributes in Dwarf Therapist
« on: September 05, 2012, 06:09:50 am »
Hi,
I've been wondering - is there a way to write a custom script that will show other attributes in Dwarf Therapist besides strength, agility and toughness ? What about creativity, endurance, spatial sense,...

Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How Do You Deal With Forgotten Beasts?
« on: August 28, 2012, 11:12:44 am »
*UPDATE*
While I was pondering I've noticed some job cancellations - interrupted by forgotten beast. Luckily it did not run away, rather it was stuck inside the corridor that was supposed to be flooded, but the water level dropped to 2/7, so some hunters decided to make it a target practice, and since they were all standing in the water, the toad was powerless. And soon enough it was dead.  :'(
Thanks for the trap idea thou

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How Do You Deal With Forgotten Beasts?

I've just stumbled upon a forgotten beast:
Quote
A towering one-eyed toad. It has a pair of branching antennae and it undulates rhythmically. Its lime skin is rough and cracked. Beware its fire!
So after it appeared I've just sounded the alarm and sent all my military units to quickly dispatch it (about 15 melee in steel armor + 8 archers) well... they looked very fierce. Because of so much fire and smoke I did not make out much about who is winning... until I've noticed only 3 melee and 3 archers remaining. And that's when I've decided to retreat.
I've sealed the beast between two staircase choke points. After that I've designed a way to drown it inside that staircase which is sealed. Well... after some time it dawned on me - it's a toad - it's not supposed to be drowned - right?
So, instead of a simple DAS or cave collapse, what do you recommend how to make use of it's fire breathing (and might I add it looks as if it's shooting fireballs. If i put it in a pit and make it a "must-see-for-all-enemies" (and hippies) - will it fire on goblins and kobolds?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why doesn't this silk farm work?
« on: August 16, 2012, 09:39:00 am »
Hi,
I've just made perfectly the same design as is described in this Wikipedia article http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Giant_cave_spider to farm GCS silk.
For some reason - it does not work.
This is my design:

Now, I've tried dropping there a goblin thief, and now troglodyte and still it does not want to fire.
Honestly, I don't know how this GCS came into my fortress. I have a lot of traps in the cavern beneath (not just a single row) and maybe it could be from caravans. Anyway - with a hostile creature any GCS should start fireing, right?
Is it possible for animals to calm down?
I don't know - what am I doing wrong here.

I'm sorry you don't see it as funny... I think dwarves even have elf-jokes.... they... don't hate them as much as they pitty them...  :-\

Will do :)
Now what about other were-beast attacks? What about claws for example, maybe it ripped it off using claws?!? I don't remember any notification of him being bitten.

well... it's not in any burrial receptacles, so I guess the most possible answer is that it is this other werehyena... however, it was not imediatelly the following full moon that the second one appeared, there was one full moon that nothing happened whatsoever...

You might have the first documented survivor of a were-bite EVER (well in terms of the dwarf not getting infected, in my fortress being a werewolf is a death sentence)  . Congrats.
Now that you say it like that, I do feel a bit sad for wanting this fortress to be destoryed for being very boring... hmmm... Now when you mentioned it... what did happen to that arm... As I recall, it was dragged to the refuse pile. After some time, I was not able to find it... I should check if there are some +dwarven upper arm bone bolts+ laying around (if marksmen did not already shoot them away) :D

Ok, my humble addition to were-science: Around half years after by great axedwarf got his hand riped of by were-hyena and he still did not change (even though there was once some other random hyena on the surface, he did not change).
So, I conclude, that it is maybe enough to have your dwarf quarantine for one month and then to release him if he does not change.
Only I am not sure if he needs to actually SEE the full moon? After all.. he was down underground - maybe that's why he did not change?

Thanks anyway... I've decided after all not to risk any loose cave cravlers to link separate cages to one lever and then to deliver some nice presents.
Oh, yes, I've almost forgot, in case they suceed in killing all my presents, I'll pump in 7/7 water, and after few minutes I'll pull the drain :)

Thanks...
well - that was something i'm planing to do. Got all flood gates ready and linked to levers. Now only thing that is still on my mind is how to most effectively release them ahead of time into that pit.

well... if I am supposed to link cage by cage with a lever, it would take some time... i thought about some quicker way... do cave crawlers and elephants escape when I move them from one cage to another?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Surprize for elves
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:47:47 pm »
So... I've started this game in a on an aquifer (was fun digging trough it) good-calm biom... Now - it is boring, so I am planing to bring fun to a higher level.
Any enemy that happens to come to lvl3 cavern gets killed, any poor elephant that stumbles to the outside gets killed. No goblins! No wars - only occasional vampire (that imediately gets recruited to the vamp squad) and were-hyenas from time to time. It is boring...
So, now I am planing a surprize party for elves when they aprear in spring :)
I've constructed a special room with depo access just for them, that can be sealed with floodgates. Also there is a pit next to it which walls can be lowered - yes you guessed it right - filled with presents  ;D
So far I've captured dozen unicorns, few elephants, lava man and a cave crawler... Now I am thinking - is it safe for me to just dump them from 1lvl above the pit? Are they going to escape? I know every time I try to move unicorns they escape. I would not like for that to happen to me with let's say a cave crawler...
Is there some other way except for linking them to a lever? (it would take a lot of mechanisms and time).

Too bad I've read this just now (about the combat log). I've had one of my dwarfs chopping woods outside, and all of the sudden a werehyena appears close to him. I write him off as one of the necessery casualties to save the rest of the fort. While I was appointing everyone to the burrows I did not notice that this dwarf (although he was partially in his civilian clothing) survived for a few moments. Then I've checked his equipment and noticed that he was one of the lucky ones that had the adamantine battle axe. Well... few swings over this beast and the hyena was dead... BUT... my dwarf was wounded... And might I add, he was the only Great warior at that time... well, good thing you can wield battle axe with only one hand cos he was missing the entire left arm.
Anyways... I bring him to my fort, and marked my self one month to build him some confy secluded room. It was simmilar in design like my vamp room, but this time he had to have some food and drinks. Well... one month passed, nothing yet. Two months and BOOM - but not him - another were heyena outside. This time he ran away. Good thing is that he did not notice my king who was stralling outside about 30 blocks away from him. Well.. either that or he saw my Vamp squad of 7 gaining on him (good armor and adamantine weapons). BUT my one-armed dwarf was still there in his room - he did not change, and he still had a missing arm.

Do you think that I can now safelly assume that he was not bitten (maybe hyena scratched him so hard, his arm fell off)?

So,
after a minotaur appeared outside my fort, I've activated few of my squads (overkill :) ) including the secluded Vampire squad "Turquoise kisses" (notice the name (random)  :)- DF definately has a sense of humor turned on to the max) that I let out on this special occasion. Well, none of my dorfs was killed, and the Minotaur was dead even before the first dorf from the Vamp squad came.
So, I tell my "Turquoise kisses" squad to go back to their seqluded room where their train. I've went on with other bussiness around the fort being sure that they will respectfully obey my order, and then I get a reported cryme about someone being drained of blood... let me check the Vamp room - guess what - no dwarfs there... where are they?!? mingling with other dwarfs...
And of course, one of them is happy because she enjoyed in slaughter  8)... But wait ... what do I see? Other two have unhappy thoughts?!? It seams that they "Whitnessed a death receantly" :'(... awwww... poor incredibly-tough-with-pointy-teeth Vampires - they've whitnessed a death. Notice the amount of hipocricy. BUT WAIT - where are they going?!?!? They are going to report the crime .... and, they did.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After a nice drink, and after they picked up and filled their new waterskins with some booze, they are back to their burrows grumbling around. Well... all but the one who had a grin on his face and a full stomach.
