In my past fort, I used pressure plates and floor hatches to divide cavern monsters into three groups: useful creatures (GCS,cave crocs), useless creatures (crundles, trogs) and building destroyer 2's/trap avoids.
When the useless creatures tried to go through the cage trap corridor, they triggered a floor hatch that would reroute them to the serrated steel disks. Likewise, when useful creatures try to enter the weapon trap corridor, a hatch would open that would send them towards the cages. There is a third path that is blocked by a locked door, behind lies ~10 menacing steel spikes linked to a lever.

In .19 where metals are rarer, it may be a better idea to invest in a building designer if you want a monarch. In .18, there was so much gold that yuou could pave the entire surface in gold roads.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: "Did you know...?" -- Flammable Floorgrates

Make a sideways drawbridge with a gap running perpendicular to it, link it to a lever and raise it.  Fill the space the bridge used to occupy with lignite floor grates, then light them on fire.  Nothing except fireproof enemies will get through that alive, and because the AI currently doesn't understand being on fire very well, they will happily charge right into the blaze.  What I need tested is if the grates will remain flaming after the bridge covers them, or remain in place after the bridge drops.
Sadly, you can't build underneath a bridge.

You don't need to build grates over a channel, so you can have as large a hallway as you like. Then flood it with magma to start the fire. Then the only way to remove the fire is if you wash it with water. The setup isn't too challenging to build.

H-How... How do you KNOW this?  How many times did you pit your own dwarves, watching their skill chart "Good, good, swim like a little fire imp...  Ah, this batch isn't magma-proof either?  Next batch will be different!"

Object testing arena.

Another fact: Dwarfs take ~9 months to reach legendary swimmer in 4-5/7 water.

Keep filling it and hope that they drown?  :-\

Fun Fact: A dwarf in 7/7 magma will get dabbling swimmer before burning.

I made some bigger hydras. The dodecahydron boasts 12 heads and is slightly bigger than the hydra. The isocahydra has 20 heads and is even bigger still. One isocahydra can kill hundreds of kobolds!
Unfortunately, they still can't kill dragons or bronze colossuses.

Spoiler: Dodecahydra (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Isocahydra (click to show/hide)

Next up: more poisonous blood

Is there any use for feathers or skulls?
Feathers no
Skulls can be made into totems.

Is there a way to turn black-cap water wheels to be actually black?
