tl:dr version plz?

Speed determines how fast creatures move. Lower number, faster movement.
The idea is that as FPS lowers, you can increase the speed of ALL the creatures proportionally so that it takes less real life time and feels like higher FPS.

Happy now?  :P

Also, do Giant cave spiders silk webs randomly spawn in caverns? I have a few patches in one of mine, but I can't find the GCS.

Its possible that the CGS has already left the cavern.
GCS's are like any other cavern creature, including FB's. Eventually, they will wander off the edge of the map.

Clearly this is the reason why dwarf fortress is #68 and not higher on the list.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to be super-optimal. Even with 1/tile, the dwarfs should reach legendary in weapon/fighting in < 1 year. Their shield and armor skills will be high enough for all vanilla enemies. I hate the micromanagement  :'(

I would put the ranged squads after the melee units.
Some demons can use deadly dust which might spread before killing. Maybe put the bears first, though they'll probably all die.

Forgotten beasts are &s that didn't make it to the circus in time and were trapped in the caverns.
Titans didn't even make it to the caverns, so they live on the surface.

They are fine, just disable woodcutting labor when you draft them otherwise they might bounce between the two uniforms, so they'll pick up an axe, put it down ad infiinitum
