You can't build constructions on other constructions.
Just build a wall, you don't need a floor first.

I've had more crashes on the linux versions than the windows versions.

When the windows one says 'program not responding', ususally its just lagging and will unfreeze itself after a minute or so.

I keep mine at 20. I also reduced the siege requirements.

When I play fort defense mod though, I bump it up to 100.

Rather than creating a regular ol' map, you can design your own. Amongst the myriad of settings are the Cavern Openness and Cavern Passage Density. Put both of those to 100 and you should have giant, expansive caverns.

Actually you want cavern passage density to be zero.

This kinda depends on your play-style.
Usually, I have 3~4 masons, engravers, miners and only 1 or 2 lye-makers or wood-burners.
Some dwarfs only have 1 or 2 skills active (mason/engrave) and some have 4 (wood burning/lye making/soap making/potash making)

Whenever I breach the caverns accidentally, I just start my silk industry in the caverns.
Then I wall it off and flood it after catching a GCS.

Make a room.
Make that room a burrow.
Assign everyone to that burrow.
Pump water into the room until it is ~6 water deep.
Wait a few seasons.
Now all your dwarfs should be swimmers!

I find elf caravans to be overpowered.
Cost: 1 trade depot.
Reward: Near infinite cloth.
Think of all the socks you can make with those!  :o
