if you can arange for some large powerful creature to be disabled somehow such that it remains unconscious then they'll train up really really fast wrestling it.

Do ambushes and seiges strictly come at 50 and 80 respectively?

Or if I produce enough wealth, and am below the thresh-hold will they come nonetheless?

I believe you need all the requirements, 80 dwarves, 100k created wealth, etc.

ok so the elf merchant have all gone stark raving mad because i locked em in the trade depot...is it safe to let em out now and take all their stuff or will they run off?

I haven't fiddled with any raws. I'm using the latest Ironhand pack.

Maybe it's because he's an Ambusher? He began at Proficient Ambushing, so perhaps he's so badass he can stay practically invisible to them, since he's shooting at range and not going too close?
Though many times he's been relatively in close proximity to the monsters, yet they haven't detected him.

Interesting note : It's now Summer, year 2. He's Legendary+3 in Marksmanship.
The ambusher skill will allow the dwarf to sneak up against the enemy without getting caught, kinda like kobold thieves. The scorpians are probably wounded so they are running away.

I've embarked on many volcanoes. Never happened before.

Actually, I think he wants players to be able to decide how strict they want to play.

As for me, I'll focus on trying to keep my conventional fortress from having too much fun first.

 Somehow, I've found that danger rooms in 18 are less dangerous than they were in 16. In 16, several of my dwaves lost fingers or got bruises from a 3x3 room with a single training spear. In 18, I've had no dwarven injuries so far, except for babies.

The embark wagon. How your 7 dwarves reached your embark site. When do you deconstruct it?

For me, I never deconstruct my embark wagon. It's only 3 wood. In fact, after digging my fortress, I construct a wall around it to prevent building destroyers from touching it.
Then again, I never bothered to do the uber-minimalistic and micromanagy embark where you make your own tools and stuff or embarked in a biome with no trees.
