DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Is it just me or is 3.18 EXTREMELY buggy
« on: November 23, 2010, 01:42:12 pm »
For the most part I've had almost no problems with it. Only crashes I've come across were last night when I generated a 20-100 volcanism world and tried to start a game in it. Oddly enough another world with the same parameters worked fine, but crashed on embark when I found a volcano I liked (in the middle of a glacier).

I don't have much trouble with the freezing/thawing, myself. For some reason the maps I embark on tend to have a good amount of an ocean that freezes over during winter, and I only really lag when it thaws (though at that time I freeze for a good five to ten minutes).

As an interesting anecdote, when I found a glacier-volcano I could embark on in that second world for some reason the lava just all spilled away into the depths, never to be seen again. I think I might've angered Armok...

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Combat tips, tricks and exploits

Whips are still the sickest damage dealers -- their very existence begs for exploitation. And it's far easier to get a silver one earlier.

I hate those things. I fought a bandit leader with a silver whip and they just smashed my foot in with it and caused me to pass out from pain two turns later and get ripped apart.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?

I'm still picking up how to do the mode properly, myself, but after a few terrible fates and an act of mercy leading to my retiring (when killing some bandit guy, I let his last friend live because I wounded him and messed up one of his feet, and felt bad chasing him as he crawled away. He later came back, claiming I'd remember the Merchants of Stopping when he was through with me, stabbed me in the foot, permanently crippling my ability to stand, and we proceeded to duel for like ten minutes while I was laying on the ground before I cut his wounded foot off and I finished him when we were both on the ground) I'm starting to have some good fun. Though during this adventurer, I seem to keep coming across mysteriously abandoned towns. Two so far, in the first one I nearly got killed by two alligators, and in the second I had to slaughter a pack of wolves. Anyone know what that's about?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / So those Bogeyman...
« on: November 21, 2010, 01:53:59 am »
Pretty cool, I think, the whole cackling and evil and it's dangerous to go alone stuff... They actually seem pretty managable for a new guy if you're careful though, or am I just lucky?

On the other hand, they seem to have an annoying tendency to kick me in the chest and bruise vital organs like the heart or the lung... (The former got an adventurer of mine I'd grown attached to, though I actually managed to survive and recover from the latter, despite it bringing up the "Mortal Wound" label-thing... Is that supposed to work that way?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Somekinda Cave-in Glitch?

Yeah... It did seem to kinda reset the landscape, pretty much... And I had embarked on an old location... I'll have to keep that in mind then, thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Somekinda Cave-in Glitch?
« on: November 06, 2010, 10:55:21 am »
So I just recently got back into Dwarf Fortress, and I've been going through quite a few forts thanks to some really fun embark choices on my part, but an odd thing seems to occasionally happen... The first time I kinda shrugged it off, but I'm getting slightly concerned after the second time. Basically after a short time starting on my fortress, the entire fortress will suddenly seem to cave-in, for seemingly no reason, and with no announcement. In addition, all of my items and dwarves aren't destroyed, simply trapped into one tile where they subsequently die of dehydration. Is this some kind of odd glitch, or a new cave-in method? For what it's worth, I'm running DF 0.31.16, with no mods whatsoever, embarking in a heavily forested area with sand, a volcano, and an aquifier, a little island kinda place. The area I was digging into was almost entirely peat, and was right nearby a volcano's magma, but quite a few tiles were between them.
