I have a kickass gaming rig with a top-of-the-line graphics card. I flat-out refuse to play certain games because they look crap. I'm bitterly disappointed in a couple of betas I'm testing because graphically they're not that good. And I have no problem with DF's ascii.
Look, if you don't like ascii, then don't play an ascii game. It's used for many reasons, all of which have been mentioned.
