I ask because I never designated one and none of my grazing animals are dying off. The meeting area is near a bunch of moss and grass though. If they don't need to be in a designated pasture, it will cut down on micromanaging because they will just find their own food.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / wear the wooden armor... no, really
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:23:33 pm »
I wan't to make my dwarves wear the wooden armor I bought from the elves (because it's better than the leather I have), but there is no option for it under the equip screen. the mail shirt wasn't a problem, because I don't have any others, but the wooden caps and helms have to compete with the leather, which is more expensive. How do I coax them to wear the wooden caps instead of leather ones, considering I already have leather ones made?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why is my magma sea disappearing?!
« on: March 11, 2011, 01:13:16 am »
I have an embark where the magma sea started slowly emptying. Additionally, for some reason, it appears to be draining through the SMR (despite there being no visible holes) and hell, then off the bottom of the map, going through huge eerie glowing pits. I've never seen an eerie glowing pit myself, but the pit itself and every square above it, all the way to the top of hell has the falling magma graphic. Or is the magma just draining off the edge of the map? Does it have to do with the fact that I used reveal?

I'll post the save in a couple minutes.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / left shoe, right shoe... or not?
« on: March 10, 2011, 07:30:59 pm »
I've noticed that footwear no longer has "left" and "right" as part of the description. Is this normal with the new version? Also on a related note, let's assume you have a copper low boot and an iron low boot: how do you get a single dwarf to equip both of them?

I'm trying to remake my stairs because I dug into the top of a wide open cavern. However, they keep cancelling the construction because there are rocks on the spot where they are trying to build it. The rocks are not forbidden or set for dumping, but if I move the rocks beforehand, they can build it. Before they would always move unmarked rocks automatically. Why are they suddenly being more retarded than normal?

DF General Discussion / The Banner of Ghosts
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:07:55 pm »
I just genned a new world in 31.21 and had an extinct dwarven civilization with the name "The Banner of Ghosts". i figured this would have novelty to some on the forums, so I posted it.

The world has:
1. about 225 years of history
2. some of each race
3. a single cavern layer
4. is large
5. 10 z-levels above ground
6. 5 z-levels of stone (I think) above the first cavern

If I were to upload the world to DFFD, would anyone want to use it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / dust troubles
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:32:58 pm »
I had a runin with a forgotten beast with a dust attack. It killed a couple of dogs and a bunch of dwarves got hit with the dust. One of them also got a ripped tendon, but I digress. They all have a flashing white "X" and won't move. Why aren't they requesting a diagnosis and how can I fix the issue?

edit: it seems they were stunned, but there is also a bunch of forgotten beast extract all over the floor. It's all frozen, somehow, and it's all in the caverns. Why is this? Is it still dangerous? Will it ever unfreeze?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / a new low
« on: February 21, 2011, 06:49:57 pm »
I just started a new .18 fort (haven't upgraded to .19 yet). It was a rough start. Much of the meat I embarked with rotted because I didn't get it out of the quantum dump fast enough. Farming got a late start because the river was frozen for most of the spring. Food ran out soon because I forgot to process the quarry bush leaves, and some of the dwarves were eating vermin to fill their bellies. The dwarven caravan had come and gone and I was about to start up my metal industry, only to realize I somehow didn't have an anvil. I had already had a few snatchers which succeeded in stealing a star ruby and 2 children, so I hastily drafted my 2 miners into the militia and set up a danger room. Lacking an anvil, I resorted to crafting leather armor, only to find out I somehow didn't have any of that either. So I had to quickly make some bolts and a crossbow to give to some dwarf so he could hunt. I got 2 groundhog leather armor made up for my miners before the first ambush, coming in behind the elves. Some mostly useless dwarf died revealing the ambush, so I sent out the miners. Though highly skilled in fighting and mining, I was worried about their safety. Lucky for me, picks made from something as cheap as copper are still mighty weapons, and they slaughtered half of the ambush, causing the remaining goblins to run like scared little elves. And now, I find myself buying wooden armor from the tree hugging hippies. And now my bonecrafter is asking for shells.

Fun indeed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / officially tired of the fps death
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:14:13 pm »
So I was wondering, what exactly do I change in the RAWS to get what I want?

1. Smaller caverns, but would still like all 3 layers, as well as the carnival
2. A shallower world overall, but still retaining the previously mentioned cavern layers
3. I would also like to keep temperature, weather, etc. turned on, because they are part of the experience
4. Anything else I might be overlooking without turning any features off

I have never done anything to the RAWS before, so please format your answers assuming I know nothing about it. Thanks in advance :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / questions about unarmed fighting
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:27:32 pm »
Obviously the strength of the dwarf matters, but what is the "weapon size" of the limb, if there is one at all? Does striking/kicking have a velocity multiplier? Is the damage increased by wearing hand/footwear? Does the material of the limb affect the attack? Is there a way to mod weapons that use unarmed skills (striking, kicking, wrestling)? Would the size of this weapon add itself to the size of the limb, or be considered by itself?

Just out of curiosity. Can a thief steal an entire bin full of stuff in one go?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Danger Room too full?
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:02:18 pm »
My danger room is 1X1 and I have 23 military dwarves all using the same danger room. However, just recently I've noticed that they all seem to teleport out of the room when too many dwarves get inside. Is this normal and what does this mean to our beloved dwarven physics?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / defending the burrows
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:43:45 pm »
Since my military likes to run outside every once in a while (even when I give them a move command), i was wondering if ordering them to defend a burrow would remedy this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / dwarf therapist glitch?
« on: January 29, 2011, 10:45:14 pm »
I didn't know if it would go in modding or here, so here it is. I have recently equipped several new recruits with whips. In game they are referred to as "lashers", but in dwarf therapist, it lists them as having pike skill instead. This is affecting all of my lashers and nothing else. Is this a known bug or is there some way to fix it? It's not causing a problem per say, it's more of a curiosity thing.
