Mass produce copper armor and copper picks for all of your civilians, then train them up and breach the HFS.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Gold buckler?
« on: June 12, 2011, 05:28:03 pm »
I wonder, if you gave all your dwarves ample cabinet space in an area with easy kobold access, would that be a handy way of solving the clothing problem? That or just put all less than masterwork crafts topside so you don't have to bother selling cheap scrap, and get more fun for it. Could be a great moneyspinner if you made GCSs mounts and gave kobolds the tags to use them.

Except tamed GCS don't use webs. But who's to say it wouldn't be a lot of FUN! anyways?

Gold is slightly heavier than silver, but bucklers are half the size of shields and so would bash for less damage. Because bucklers are smaller, they also block fewer attacks (I think). However, because it is an artifact, the extra bonuses to accuracy and block it gets may outweigh the drawbacks. I say give it to someone. It can't be that much worse, can it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: question on equipping peasants

I say give them each a mining pick, a shield, and whatever spare armor you don't want your mail military to use. Though, I suppose any spare weapon could do in a pinch. Or no weapon at all. A dozen wrestlers is quite a force to be reckoned with.

you dont really need beds if you get a mason and make him make stone statues EVERYWHERE....and you dont have many mass tragedies...lolz, but this is dwarf fortress, tragedy is where the fun is

oh and a giant engraved sculpture garden and dining room...complete with waterfall.

with a complex system such as this, you can really get around anything if you try hard enough

the way I figure, the primary purpose of beds is to keep your dwarves from sleeping in dangerous places, like outside, in the caverns, or in that new drainage tunnel they were making.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Golden shortsword?
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:34:56 pm »
This may no longer be relevant, but I'd note that since a golden shortsword presumably sucks as a weapon, it's probably best assigned to whoever is in charge of "law enforcement".

Too dangerous for law enforcement. Poor against anything stronger than bone. The artifact bonus is nice, though. Unless you are restricted to copper or silver, put it in a vault or a nice trap for your dwarves to admire.

I thought herbalists used bags. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'd dump it right next to your jewelry workshop and hope one of your jewelers gets a mood.

No dwarf in Smithcities wants to be a gem setter. :\

Why not? They get to handle some of the most beautiful and valuable minerals which come out of the ground. It's a fine, dwarven profession. Or at the very least, a human profession. But hey, It's better than an elfy profession. Like woodcrafting. You aren't part of the woodcrafting guild, are you? Carpentry is fine. Even dwarfier it involves Carp.

Is there a Urist of FBs? If not, I think we have a candidate.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: dual weapons: Is it worth it?

A mining pick and a crossbow. If you could somehow get a dwarf to use both at appropriate times, this is all they will ever need for actual combat.

Just curious: Is it possible for dorfs to get fat later in life without being fat when they were born?

I think so, the same with muscle, agility, and toughness.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Lowest Artifact Value Competition
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:39:11 pm »
I've had several that low. If the dwarf grabs just a single piece of a material with a base value of 1, then it is the lowest possible value artifact.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Archery Training
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:35:36 pm »
Each archery target has to be it's own barracks, even if they overlap. Make sure they are all set for the correct squad and set for T (train).

Of course, live targets are vastly superior, but setting them to hunt means they are vulnerable to invaders. If you can catch live targets in cage traps, you can release them in a controlled environment behind some fortifications.

Until nobles are fleshed out more (or the economy gets fixed), there is little actual benefeit from having nobles (except fun!). In addition, if you become a mountainhome (getting a monarch), you will no longer get a liaison, and therefor, can no longer special request specific items from the dwarven traders (who will still show up).

Also, a dwarf can be both incredibly fat AND incredibly muscular. The extra fat slows them down a bit, but it adds a lot of natural protection for the dwarf as well. Consider it a blessing.
