However, I can guarantee magic is never going to make an appearance in the game, I'm afraid :(.
!!!

Haven't been keeping too much up with the thread, but... plans for magic were dropped?

Same here, haven't been following in here either, and this makes me a little disappointed. However, I'm sure there's good reasons for it. Power level, coding issues, possibility of it becoming too much of a 'unfun' mechanic, etc. etc.

This game can be (and is on track to be!) an amazing game without it, so that in itself is one reason not to include it, I suppose.  :P

DF General Discussion / Re: least menicing wear beast

I love how the fact that the typo everyone has focused on is "wear beast", and not "menicing". Probably because several people have said "menicing" too. It makes me facepalm. ._.

Anyway, on-topic, don't have a screencap of it, but a weregiraffe once beat down half my militia in a glorious bloodfest. I have to admit, I was impressed.

Why don't you want to disable UAC? It seems to clear up quite a few problems in recent Windows.

This. Honestly, disabling UAC isn't a big deal, and you can always just do it for the gaming session.

Other than that, I have no clue.

This. So much, this.

Currently playing through Fate/Stay Night. Almost didn't soldier through the prologue, trying to drudge through to where the beginning of the 'real game' meets with where the prologue ended. I really don't like the drudgery up to this point (the story is 'meh' when you're just reliving the same three days as the prologue from a different POV). We'll see if I like it as I continue through it.

I didn't enjoy Shuffle all that much. Seemed a run of the mill VN, but then again I only played the first one.

It pretty much was with a little bit of an exception, but I guess I enjoyed the anime enough that it stands out for me.

I enjoyed Katawa Shoujo quite a bit when it came out, but for me, I can rarely ever go through more than one storyline of a VN. It's too much like an anime or manga for me to accept any other storyline as canonical, and I'm just a purist dick like that (for me, it was Hanako; the ending scenes were a little rushed and awkward for my tastes at times, but it satisfied my eagerness for a conclusion to the story, I guess).

As for good VNs, good luck acquiring them outside of living in japan. However, if you do manage to find ways to do so, pretty much any VN by Key is going to be good imo - especially Clannad (and is obviously my exception to going through more than one storyline of a VN; you'll understand when you play it).

Also recommended: Shuffle! and School Days.

Bonus points if he has a silver warhammer.

Even more bonus points if it's a gold warhammer.

Wait until a Bronze Colossus came... and then pull it, immediately arming himself.

WWUD if elves had beards?

(Slightly Off-Topic: I want a wrist band that says WWUD with the Dwarf character on it now.)

DF General Discussion / Re: What Do You Think About Tilesets?
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:36:30 am »
(Disclaimer: mostly talking about graphics packs here in my post)

I admire the detail and underappreciated beauty of many tilesets, and respect the time put into them. I absolutely love sprite work. It's always been my favorite form of computer graphics, especially when done well.

However, I refuse to use them for Dwarf Fortress. For me they only add to my confusion at the best of times, and they really break my immersion from the game.

1) Confusion: Let's point out the obvious; tilesets often try to make things look like what it represents, but in doing so, causes weird situations where it's NOT what it's supposed to represent. This has already been covered earlier in this thread. It seems to me that I would just prefer a symbol that I will ALWAYS be able to instantly glance at and, according to context, be able to figure out. But when the tileset is TELLING me that something is something entirely different, it breaks immersion.

2) Immersion: For me, any game with graphics needs very appealing (read: aesthetically pleasing, not necessarily realistic) graphics to keep me immersed. Kingdom Hearts, with it's almost anime-3D style was appealing for its time, and kept me immersed. Mass Effect (sometimes 1, and sometimes 2), with its broad and epic tale of the future, had the graphics to match 99% of the time to keep me immersed. But tilesets? It's just not 'good enough'. There is a HUGE level of detail in the game for descriptions of appearances, inventories, equipment, actions, etc.

But with tilesets, all of that is lost. You're telling me that that blonde-haired elf sprite there is ACTUALLY bald, missing an arm and an eye, and bleeding to death? Don't buy it. It's far too literal. However, ASCII is immediately open for interpretation; it's not telling you that the little 'g' is a goblin swordsman with no nose and scars all over his arms, it gives you the bare minimum for your interpretation of details. If you want to know more, then you read a description. Imagination takes over. You're more immersed. In a way, I could cover all of this in a third category of 'accuracy vs abstraction', how sprites attempt to feign accuracy when they're not and ASCII only demonstrates abstraction, which it excels at.

That's how it is for me anyway. I wonder how the numbers of people who prefer ASCII to prefer graphics packs reflect the numbers of players with high levels of creativity/imagination vs those with low levels of it. Not meaning to be insulting, just a genuine thought, as I know all kinds of people do enjoy Dwarf Fortress. I'd never argue against having graphics packs, mind you, it's important that people who otherwise would never have played get to play, because this game is simply amazing. But graphics packs are just SO not for me; it's turned me off from a small handful of roguelikes that I've tried and otherwise would have liked.

General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: June 01, 2012, 05:47:43 pm »
Backstory; I have a girlfriend of over a year now that I cared about quite a bit. But then I met a girl a little while back that I've become pretty taken with. I find out after she starts dating one of her friends that she liked me too. Well, I was going to back off, but neither of us quite can manage to do it; we just don't want to. We haven't done anything to actually cheat, mind you, but I'm not sure how - or if I can - break up with my current girlfriend. Especially with this girl dating someone else anyway. However, this relatively recent boyfriend of hers treats her like crap. He's controlling, cruel, and often simply ignores her 99% of the time. Not to mention he's a small time drug-addict who ratted out a friend of mine to save his own skin when he almost got found out. Mind you, I don't condone any form of drug use, but still, no matter what your lifestyle is, being a selfish rat is always distasteful.

So suffice to say I really dislike this guy for a lot of reasons.

What's getting me down about this today? I'm graduating next Friday, all that's left of High School life are exams, and I'm not going to be able to see this girl much at all now. But she's very close to dumping her boyfriend. Not necessarily for me, mind you, but because of the way he treats her. Plus, I still have my own confusion with my current girlfriend, who I really feel like I've lost all attachment to between stuff happening between me and her, and my feelings that have crept up on me with this girl I've been getting close to.

Basically, life and emotions are confusing, and I just really needed to get all that off my chest.

It may have been asked and/or answered somewhere previously, but PLEASE tell me there'll be an option for no graphics once the tiles are merged with the vanilla game (I may have read that wrong, so if tilesets aren't going to be merged, then my bad, I'm an idiot). As nice as your tilesets are Deon, I DESPISE tile sets for roguelikes. Breaks the immersion for me and it would kill me to honestly not be able to play this amazing game because of something like that.
I am almost 100% sure it will be optional, and you could always just clear the graphics.cfg even in the current graphics mod to make it pure ASCII, so don't worry.

Mk, good. Don't get me wrong though, I do admire your work, regardless. Just isn't for me. :P
