DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Wierd development priorities
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:40:48 am »
Reading the dev blog, I understand less and less the rationale behind the priorities. One would think that implementing/fixing the basic stuff should go first, and complex, advanced and potentially problematic stuff later.

For example, I keep reading crazy stuff about undead, necromancy, spell system, witness reporting with multiple layers of added complexity (and, of course, bug potential).

Meanwhile, the game still lacks basic stuff (or it is buggy), like economy - salaries, hirelings, etc. The clothes bug would be nice to fix. Much effort should be spend optimizing the game, since many players report quitting due to FPS problems created by tracking dust/mist/vapor after a simple cave-in - how much worse will things happen after the game will also track stuff like who knows who is a werewolf and who does not (division of authentic and alleged information layers), who witnessed what when, and what chopped-off bodyparts have developed nice personalities.

Also, extending the development to one release per year brings practical problems - players will age and die too quickly to appreciate the final product!

DF General Discussion / Toady's hurt ankle has been raised as a skeleton

... and now helps the project by doing minor coding assignments. Hooray for multitasking!

Okay, the stuff I keep reading on the main page sounds too insane to believe. Chopping off one's arm, animating it with necromancy, and make it enter the Legends after countless deeds of valor? What next? Could it become a ruler of a nation, or perhaps found a dynasty?

The other day, you could just clip your fingernails and hair, animate them, and let them infiltrate an enemy faction, destroying it from the inside with acts of subterfuge. Or just spit by the road, having the spittle to become a teacher and founder of a new monastic order, changing the culture of the land forever.

Insane, I tell you...

Anyway, I had this nice dwarf adventurer, he got a steel battleaxe from the start. Needless to say, he massacred everything left and right, limbs flying, night creatures dying.

But once, I witnessed that bizarre wilderness encounter, elves vs. goblins, and the elves were quite friendly. After killing the gobbos, I talk to one of them, hello, nice to meet you, could you do a few quests for us? Kill this one, and that one, and this guy too. Guess what - they were inhabitants of human towns. I did not even touch anyone yet, and every carpenter and soap-maker went like: "Don't talk to me!". Rude, isn't it? Not only that, he attacked me after, and all the poor sods in the town too. After I depopulated a few villages in self-defense, I wanted to repent somehow, but no. In the end, bogeymen got me, because, I had nowhere friendly to sleep at. How sad.

Out of the many smaller worlds I recently generated, most of them were dominated by a single civilization - usually an elf civilization. They even depopulate towns and villages. I wondered what makes them so successful in the many autocalc battles each civ goes through, and found out elven patrols now regularly use iron weapons. Has there been a change in their taboo?

DF General Discussion / ACCUM_BUFFER vs FRAME_BUFFER vs VBO

Have you tasted the rendering modes? Which one is fastest/most stable?

Elves seem to be a lot more deadly, according to legends. Monsters that kill many dwarves and humans, only to be slain by a random elf. Is it due to a change in the rules, or something?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Animals in Legends
« on: March 28, 2011, 06:12:34 am »
I have noticed that ordinary animals started to appear in Legends. Is that intentional? I have looked at their history, but they are not special, like a cave bat that lives in some cave and does not do anything. Wolves, bats, cougars, stuff like that.

Have you seen them recently? IMO they were (temporarily?) removed from the game.

DF Suggestions / Stone weapons
« on: March 20, 2011, 02:45:34 pm »
I think stone weapons beside obsidian short swords should really be and option - think stone age, hammers and axe/maul hybrids, or stone-tipped spears. Beats wooden weapons (literally) any day. They could be even traded from troglodytes!

DF Suggestions / Squires for nobles
« on: March 20, 2011, 02:43:45 pm »
Reading a thread about a legendary axedwarf who lost his ability to grasp in both hands due to nerve damage, I thought about the pity this dwarf cannot put on armor by himself and so cannot join future battles as a biting, kicking tornado of pain.

If notable dwarves could be assigned squires who would take care of their equipment and dressed them to battle (it was common for middle-ages knights), he could still go into battle armored!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Healthcare fixes praise zone
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:15:20 am »
# made dwarves get crutches properly
# allowed dwarves that can't stand even with a crutch to move around instead of never moving again
# stopped webs from cancelling rest job
# made "apply cast" job use water properly
# made hospital stock plaster properly
# a few fixes for hospital zone/health interface

It's not even here yet, and I have already entered an excitement frenzy.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Bone-chilling horror scene
« on: March 08, 2011, 04:56:36 am »
Creeping into a monster lair, my character smelled a horrible stench. Mustering all his will, he forced himself to proceed down the dim-lit corridor. Suddenly, a grisly scene opened before his eyes - a pestle, mortar, bumblebee remains all around, and in a clay dish in the middle of the room - bumblebee paste. The horror, the madness! What monster could grind those fluffy, buzzing balls of cuteness into such sinister luncheon? Overcome with panic, our hero flees the cursed cavern, never to return again...
