DF General Discussion / Re: Building a computer
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:35:41 pm »
I did not have good experience with hybrid disks. On paper, it should be great, but it does not work that well. The problem is that Windows 7 has Prefetch that guesses up what are you going to launch (by memorizing your habits), and loads that into memory in advance, so that the OS feels faster and more responsive. Couple of Prefetch misses, and your cache will be full of app data you never used. Try for yourself, however.

I don't know what are you talking about, but I would like to state that I hate Notch, and I would like him to return all the money. To me, preferrably.

DF General Discussion / Brace for the bugs!!! Incoming!
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:09:01 pm »
It starts with a faint noise, then a rumble, like a coming storm or a thousand-horses strong Tatar army. And then it's here - a new release, a monstrous thing of maddening complexity with its inevitable share of entropy manifestation - bugs, glitches, and crashes.

Reading the dev blog, I fear it will be massive this time.

Cephalo - the fact remains is that you know crap about the person who made the flash movie - for all we know, it could have been some sociology student writing his thesis on the subject of "Trolling clueless internet denizens with overblown graphic violence - part 1". He may be quite a cool guy who loves pulling people's legs, or he might be a neurotic wreck waiting to happen.

All your "analysis" here is just a bunch of your projections, you just need some mook to show your self-righteous moral kung fu on. The interesting question is - why do you need to? What drives you, what inner fear, wish, or hidden minervertichaikomplex? Lie on the sofa here, relax, and close your eyes. I will slowly count to ten, and when I am done, you will fall asleep...

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Sigged!!! You, sir, have made my day. Along with Pinochio and Inspector Clouseau, your place is in a pedestal.

Edit - haha, what a marvelous typo. Let me specify - in an obsidian pedestal.

I am in, as long as you let me play a pregnant kobold assassin.

Magma solves (and dissolves) everything.

What doesn't kill you will cripple you for the rest of your days.

Pffft!... What do I see here? GRAPHICS???? Bah, this has nothing to do with Dwarf Fortress.

If that all sounds too complicated or you're on a shared Linux machine without root access, the Windows version should run okay under Wine, with negligible FPS loss.

I hope you are joking. Emulation never comes with negligible performance costs - the sole exception is when a kernel is compiled with binary compatibility, like Linux Base on FreeBSD.

DF General Discussion / Re: [Grim Topic] Toady's death.
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:36:45 pm »
But what if someone goes all davinci code on everyone?

Please, don't mention that horrible, clumsy attempt on a pseudo-historical novel here. Even a passing reference makes my hair stand, and that feels really creepy since I am bald.

No to the topic of Toady's death... I gave it a thorough consideration, and I believe there is only one solution. Yep, and it is - ascention to Godhood. Plain and simple. Failing to achieve that, lesser status like Chinese Immortals would be sufficient:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Immortals

Apparently, after passing certain trials, it can be done. The bad news is that their number is fixed to 8, but some of them may have... and accident one day? Perhaps one involving magma, or a dehydrated leg caused by a vicious bee sting?

Once Immortal, the thousands years long path to the 1.0 version won't be disturbed by mundane earthly woes like age, diseases, love, wars, end of the world due to fossil fuel depletion and following economic collapse, etc.

I think it just means that the next release will be a file 0 bytes long.

Curses / Re: [MOD] LCS Gen [v 0.9] - armors conceal guns properly
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:51:33 am »
Thank you, that worked flawlessly.

EDIT - or not. When I added the MOD and compiled the whole package, I noticed that the two extra gameplay options D and E (nightmare mode and the prolonged mode, I think) vanished, only A, B, C is possible.

On the already compiled windows version, all options are still present.

Question regarding compiling on Linux - is it supposed to be compiled together with the main game, or separately? I did not find any configure script, nor could I create a proper Makefile. Sorry if this is written somewhere, I found no README with the files. Thanks in advance.

I listen to Bob Marley or other reggae music. If I had some, I would smoke pot ;-)
