I just had a well-crafted crutch adorned with oak rings and gold etchings. When my leg was chopped off, I equipped and suddenly I could jump and dodge like before! Wierd.

They have a spine, even multiple spines, I remember severing the middle one.

Damn it, I just checked in Legends, and that thing had 266 notable kills , and over 270 other kills, reigning with terror for over 1000 years. guess I just got lucky. The current era is not named The Era of the Hydra and the Titan for naught ;-). My dwarf instantly became a famous hero all over the continent... that is before he met the same patrol from Sacks of Craziness that whacked my first hero. Damn you, Sacks of Craziness!!!

Yea, it's description said it's a twisted creature or something, just like the shadow beasts you have to kill during quests. So it was a demon, probably. The most amazing thing is - my original hero was killed, and I started a second one, and I just met this demon while searching a troll's lair! What a coincidence, he had two scars, and was boasting about his victories during the first adventure, but he did not let me recruit him. What a pity.

On to topic - we killed hydra only in three, and the decisive factor was a spear - if you impale the critical organs like heart, liver and spleen, it only vomits and you can proceed to beating the hydra to death. Chopping heads takes too long.

I have just defeated a shadow spouse, and when looting the lair, a hydra came to look what's up. We killed it only with two other dwarves - a spearman's head was cleanly bitten off, the hamerdwarf got both arms torn off, but he kept on kicking and biting, diverging hydra's attention long enough for me to impale her heart, spleen and liver with an iron spear. After that, the hydra seemed to lose ability to hurt anyone. What was most disgusting - a diamond quern in the corner, with human bone meal all around. Disgusting. Curiously, when I came back to a fortress to recruit, with only the surviving, mutilated hammerdwarf, new recruits swarmed under my flag with enthusiasm. Strange folk inhabits these lands, I tell you.

What a reckless behaviour! Didn't you read the book from Strugatsky about Stalkers? If someone suddenly dies for no apparent reason, don't touch his body or equipment, just run!

Just found a prisoner marmot in a human fortress. He asked me to "get him out" when I offered him to join (though he stated he did not need my services before). So I led him out, noone tried to stop me (strange, but I did not check my reputation with the fortress civ).

He follows me now, and is quite capable in combat. Strange thing was that he was fully armored and armed even when imprisoned. But he outrun me when attacking an outlaw camp and gutted their leader before I could even come to melee range. He seems to be really fast.

Both hands broken permanently, ambushed by bogeymen, saved by heroic guards.

I assume a competent kicker and dodger could still ... kick some ass ;-)

Sneak into a lair, if you are lucky, you can steal some equipment and get away. If you are not, your kidneys and brain will end up on a frying pan.

Is it true that every single elf in the game has a wooden weapon?? One of my heroes started with oaken sword, and I have recently fought a patrol that beat me to death with birchen shortswords and maple longswords. It took them several hours to beat my unconscious body before finally killing me. Excruciating.

Anyway, I looked up Nithros and it's a deity depicted as human female. How did that lizard fiend manage to convince anyone he is her manifestation is beyond me.

As I wrote elsewhere, I had a lizard fiend from the underworld in a position of Law Giver of Luxurious Kingdoms. He created about 70 noble positions during his 1000 years in office.

Anyway, Luxurious Kingdoms have an interesting history. Their first ever lawgiver got his post by "threat of violence" (and it was some puny human), three years before Tusnom.

Luxurious Kingdoms seem to be well organized - Fellowship of Rocks started building a huge highway called The Way of Blunting, and what League of Drinks and Climatic Council did is quite obvious. The whole history is divided into short, intense conflicts with some group called The Small Incest of Excavated Terror, and long periods of peace when Tusnom expanded his noble henchmen. I thing was in love with genealogy trees.

Maybe it's a manifestation of the European Union in a parallel universe after all...

I did a background check in the Legends:

In summer 12, Tusnom fooled Luxurious Kingdoms into believing it was a manifestation of the deity Nithros.
In midwinter 12, Tusnom became a lawgiver the Luxurious Kingdoms
In early summer 21, Tusnom created the position of a war leader through the force of argument. (I guess one or two noxious belches can be quite irrefutable, and the subsequent unanimous decision can be expected).
In 26, Tusnom created a position of a lord as a matter of course (No one wanted to argue with him anymore)

.... and he continued to spam lord positions (5-9 a year)... for 1000 years. Amazing career. I found him surrounded by a general and a war leader.

Talk about European Union sprawling beaurocracy ;-)
