DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Monstrous nobility?
« on: November 15, 2010, 10:36:23 am »
I marched into a fortress and went straight to the main keep to discuss quest, and I met there... a lizard fiend law-giver.

Tusnom Ukatusnom
(hey, the name rhymes!)
A huge one-eyed lizard twisted into humanoid form. It belches and croaks. Beware its noxious secretions!
It is skinny.

How the hell it got into a seat of power in a human fortress? I bet it was not by a due democratic elections, that's for sure! Well, at least he's not fat.

Does it work in 31.17 fortress mode? I read it was bugged for a long time. Anyone tested? Thanx.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Be careful around rivers!
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:44:46 am »
My band of mercenaries was marching by a river on one sunny day, when suddenly, I heard a scream and my elite, battle-hardened crossbowman Eso WinkledBlossoms was gone! I was searching the river bank (a tracking skill would be useful!), when loads of combat messages flooded the screen. Poor Eso was fighting for his life underwater with some  insignifficant fish like carp (I forgot), and the only think I ever saw of him was his blood flowing downstream.

So keep your distance, unless you want your best brothers-in-arms end up nibbled to death by a trout in the damp, watery depths of a local brook. And next time a fish soup is served, stab it a few times with a knife, just to be sure!

If you have problems grasping the pure awesomeness that IS a demi-god, think about Chuck Norris. He could crush all 7 hydra hears with a single roundhouse kick. He is the only documented living demi-god in our world.

I have just discovered a small hamlet called HelpfulSystem. At first glance, perfectly normal village, but I smell something sinister beneath that thin crust of complacency, something dark and vicious. Maybe they are all hippies in disguise... or worse... communists! I must report it immediately to the local goblin authorities, the Just and Enlightened Fat of Wickedness. They will know what to do...

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Hydra's greatest weakness
« on: November 15, 2010, 05:48:38 am »
Hydra? I had to chop all seven heads off to kill it, while it was distracted by my "companions" (read: goblin ambush fodder).

On that note, did you notice how weak and useless the soldiers became? Take 20 of them, go for a while, you get ambushed by 20-30 goblins and you're lucky if anyone of your's survives, let alone not horribly mutilated beyond repair and I'm not even speaking about still having his weapon...

.17 is fucking brutal (and I like it).

I dare to disagree. One of my most successful dwarven demi-god Urist Worthystandards was acompanied by a human axeman Leto, armed with bronze great axe. This guy managed to get most of the kills instead of my dwarf - gloom horror's spouse, troglodyte, 3 goblin chieftains, and some twisted shadow monster, they all fell to him. Most notably, he survived my dwarf, and I bet he continues his rampage.

I think it greatly depends on how armored the recruits are - if they have some iron or bronze on, it extends their life expectancy greatly.

Ad topic - I think hydra's are vulnerable to really large groups of fanatic henchmen. I took 14 people to a quest to kill hydra, and just watched as my troops hacked it to death. It's amazing how they all fight to the death, seeing their comrade being bitten in half. I lost about 5 or 6 people.

Bah, bandaging is for wussies. We just need an ample supply of peg-legs, hooks and parrots, and off ye go, landlubber!

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Wrestling Moves
« on: November 14, 2010, 08:54:40 pm »
Everytime i time to wrrestle it doesnt do anything, all it does is grab a bodypart ;/ then i can just release it

Well, to dislocate a limb, you must grab it on two places, then you will see more options in the menu, like throws, joint dislocations, takedown, etc. The one exception is when you grab a throat, you can proceed to choke it and then you can strangle your opponent. Also, if you manage to grab a head with your hand (not forearm), you can try to gouge eyes out.

Also, I've never seen enemies use many moves. They seem to prefer breaking limbs and sometimes taking things down, but no chokeholds or such.

Well, I was just choked to death by a dragon. I expected to be torn to pieces or burned to death, but the beast just grabbed my neck with its left wing and choked me to death. I also met a troll who hurled his maul at me, and when I ducked it, he proceeded to break every possible bone with wrestling moves.

My appropriately named dwarven demi-god Urist WorthyStandards managed to wipe out no less than five goblin gangs, slay a mate of some gloom horror, or whatever that anorexic cowering in a small cave was, and finally, when being worshiped as a hero and savior far and near, he managed to assemble a sizable party of 15 men-at-arms, and fulfilled a quest of a local noble to slay 1000 years old hydra. To be honest, Urist did not charge the beast as a valiant example of bravery, no, his health was not what it used to be after losing the ability to use his left hand, so he let his fresh recruits the privilege of the front line. After the beast mangled a few of his over-eager henchmen, it was already menacing with a forest of crossbow bolts. One lucky shot severed its spine, and after the beast lost its ability to retaliate, Urist, observed the combat from a safe distance, stopped pillaging the riches of the hydra's lair, and began lashing the abomination with his custom-made silver whip, decorated by pictures of narrow crests, cave crocodiles and coal necklaces. Worthy standards finally prevailed, but when the cheering party of the surviving heroes started their journey back to the noble's fortress, already picturing themselves as wealthy and respected members of the local society, they were suddenly ambushed by a goblin patrol from Spiraling Jackals. The patrol killed Urist and most of his companions, and the news about their glorious victory never reached the towns and hamlets of the Balanced Steppes. What an anticlimax.

I am starting to appreciate the power of wrestling, so I go with shield, free hand, and wrestling + shield user + kicker skills. You can dislocate limbs easily, apply chokeholds, and when the opponent passes out, you stomp on his head. The ultimate maneuver = grap left foot with right hand + grab opponent's weapon with left forearm + kick him in the head. If this ain't cool, I don't know what is.
