I was just wondering. If you ignore completely the issues of clothing, what happens to your dwarves? In all of my fortresses, I have never thought of what my dwarves are wearing. What happens to their clothes, and does it affect their mood?

Warning, you haven't spent a single point.
Warning, you still have x amounts of points left to spend.
Warning, you have no food.
Warning, you have no alcohol.
Warning, you have a very limited (less than 2 months supply) of food or alcohol.
Warning, you are in a wilderness area without an axe, you will not be able to cut down trees.
Warning, you have not brought along any wood. This location has no wood that is local. Without wood, you will not be able to make beds.
Warning, you are starting in a terrifying area with no weapons, fighting skills or defences.
Warning, this area is scorching. Your dwarfs will have a hard time on the surface. Death by melting is likely.
Warning, this area is freezing. Your dwarfs will have a hard time on the surface. Death by frostbite or hypothermia is likely.
Warning, you have attempted to reclaim this fort xxx number of times. All attempts have been met with xxx amount of dwarfs dead from dismemberment. Perhaps you should bring more weapons?

Last time I checked, most players do that on purpose.
Unless I'm wrong.

3. If it for some reason *collapses* after the sky shielding floor is built, what would happen?
3. You get a map-wide cave in, which will utterly destroy anything on the surface freeze your computer for seven hours and replace it with a thick layer of dust and "whacky stone". soot

Fix'd.

In all seriousness, though, go for it.

DF Suggestions / Embark warnings suggestion
« on: March 24, 2011, 03:18:53 pm »
I'm going to tell a quick story. I put together what I thought was my best embark stats ever. All my dwarves were fully skilled, I had everything I needed, and I had 120 points left to spare. I thought I was a genius.

Then I get to the site, and find I forgot any kind of digging or cutting implements whatsoever. Abandon Fortress.

While I admit, I was probably in the wrong here, I wondered what sort of other mistakes could be made in embark. Perhaps warnings like this could be shown in the problems box:
Code: [Select]
You are not bringing any digging implements with you. It may be impossible to start a fortress without one
You are not bringing an anvil with you. Many players find the game harder without bringing one.
You are not bringing any seeds with you. You may be unable to feed your population.
And so on

The trouble is, though, that these warnings would have to be carefully chosen. Nobody wants to be inundated with that sort of thing before the game starts. Thus, I want to ask what might the most important things be in an embark? What deserves a warning, and how many should the player see at most?

PS: Has anybody made an embark profile creator with a better UI than Dwarf Fortress itself?

...Inglonias was one of those killed in the attack as well, meaning we've lost yet another skilled dwarf, another of the original party, and another of my friends...

Noo!

Ah, well. Good luck! Its starting to get interesting!

DF Modding / Re: Tileset request - Default, but square
« on: March 20, 2011, 05:30:13 pm »
Alloy's tileset didn't work properly. All sorts of weird colors everywhere.

I do, however, like Hanuman's square character set. I think I'll use that. Thanks for all your help, guys!

Thanks. My one complaint is that its too big. It makes the viewing window too small for my liking. I can play without the menus (at this point, I can remember all of them) but its a bit sad. Oh, well.

DF Modding / Tileset request - Default, but square
« on: March 20, 2011, 04:14:22 pm »
Is there a tileset identical to the default, but square? I've really gotten used to the default tileset, but I'm starting to be annoyed by the way the font is taller than it is wide. Anybody have a suggestion?

DF Gameplay Questions / Ambushes are way too much Fun
« on: March 20, 2011, 02:30:47 pm »
I hate ambushes. I really do. For my last fortress, I turned them off, but after a while it just got boring! And yet when I have ambushes, I usually have more Fun than I want. Same thing with sieges. (I only had one, but I got impatient after a while waiting in the fortress.)

My questions are these:
1. When should I form my first squad, and what sort of weapons should they be equipped with? When I equipped my squad with crossbows, they were often killed outright by ambushes.

2. When a siege arrives, how should I deal with it? Do I wait it out if possible, or can I attack?

3. How soon should I have an attack in mind when I'm designing and planning? Do I start day 1 by building a drawbridge and dry ditch immediately, or can it wait a year or two?

4. I'm looking for a way to implement a boulder that falls on top of something when it presses a pressure plate. Anybody know how effective that may/may not be, and if it is, designs for such a device?

I wouldn't mind being dorfed. Don't really care who I am, although if I have a choice, I'll take mason or crafter.

My mother always insists that its "Dwarf Castle" simply because she wants to annoy me.

Dwarves don't build castles! They dig them.

(I can't find any rules regarding thread bumps. Could somebody point me to some?)

I'm still interested in seeing how people think about this.
