DF Suggestions / Regarding location finder...
« on: February 17, 2011, 02:54:45 pm »
The soil category in the location finder seems like it also needs "Greater than" options in addition to "less than" options. Thoughts?

DF Suggestions / Confirm screen on embark
« on: February 10, 2011, 02:51:25 pm »
This one is pretty simple. I'm sure that all of us have embarked before we had finished preparing at least once. At least, I'm sure that I do. Usually I do it right before I remember to name the fortress and group myself. My suggestion is to add a simple "Are you sure?" message before embark, possibly also showing a summary of relevant information.

A possible example:
Code: [Select]
Are you CERTAIN that you're ready to embark?
*These two lines are choices
No (Putting no on top would help me personally, but I'd be willing to concede on this)
Yes

Items you are bringing:
*LIST OF ITEMS*

Fortress Name: *FORTRESS NAME*
Group Name: *GROUP NAME*

Comments? Would this help you?

This seems like a great thread to put my question in.

What happens to a pressure plate underneath a bridge when the bridge lowers on top of it?

I was talking to Starver. Sorry about that. Edited my last post with the quote.

DF Suggestions / Re: Alphabetize. The Stone Menu.
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:57:01 am »
Somewhere, on another drive, I have a pretty thorough analysis of what items are where under:
  • Z-Stones
  • Z-Stock/subitems*
  • Stockpile/type/subtypes
  • Depot assignment, where otherwise considered equal (of distance or value, depending on the current setting)

Given the intermix of ore/economic/plain stones under Z-Stones (with, of course, some of the more elemental bars, right at the top, and obsidian's absence) and yet separation under sub-menus under the under Stockpile/Stones area (and I forget what happens under the stockpile thing, but of course it also includes the likes of various loams and random sludges) and repetition of a sort under both the 2nd and 4th sub-menus of the Blocks stockpiling allocation, there's some inconsistencies, even while small groupings are often like-related on the others.

I think the often called-for solution is to have sorting available in absolutely every single list, including the construction material option one (as I recall was mentioned in another recent thread I was party to).  Whatever the default ordering, add Sort by bare name, Sort by item type (e.g. clothing/craft type), Sort by item material (perhaps first by leatherness/clothness/stoneness/etc, then by the the type of leather/cloth/stone/etc?), Sort by value, Sort by distance (to the cursor prior to entering whatever menu it is?), etc, etc,...  Well, that list of sorts would be up to what's easy for Toady and sounds reasonable to provide, I suppose.  It needn't be an exhaustive suggestion list, but it could end up exhausting to implement into the disparate code-fragments.

I often use the Z-Stones menu to repeatedly remind myself (or convince myself I'm not going to get (in vanilla, at least) mercury from that cinnabar deposit, etc, and put me right as to the requirements of the various pewters by referencing the information attached to lead/whatever...  I must admit I now know approximately where to look for everything, even if I can't remember the information I'm trying to look up!!! quite so readily. :)

* Although not so complete, as the likes of exotic clothing items only show up when one has any (or visitors of various hues are on map and have them), so I don't think I got a 'final and complete order' out of it.
I'm sorry. It might just be me being tired, but...
I don't get it. What are you getting at?

Agreed. Expanding the Zoom-To function would be great.

Dear Dwarves.

While I am at the same time impressed and perplexed about how you managed to get your embark wagon so high up, I'd like it if you started much, much closer to "ground level." I realize that you had a hard trip, but you don't need to stop on THE SIDE OF A $&%*ING MOUNTAIN.

Signed me.

DF Suggestions / Alphabetize. The Stone Menu.
« on: January 23, 2011, 05:01:06 pm »
Nuff said, really. The stone menu isn't something I use often, but its a good way to tell what stones do what. Could this be alphabetized for easy use and reference?

No, no. Don't get me wrong. I love my fun.
Just too much fun isn't always healthy.

This. I don't mind ambushes so much, but I absolutely abhor sieges.
Mainly because my military skills suck in that I think that crossbows are the godliest thing ever because my first fortress was destroyed by enemies wielding them. Turns out that they aren't...

Are you kidding? I thought I was the only one!

After about three years, the game just gets boring. On one hand, I could start on the mainland where invasions can occur, I can interact with the world, and make the game more interesting.

On the other, I can find an island somewhere and mine in peace. It doesn't help me that I haven't lived through a single siege.

The wiki. I started fooling around right when 31.18 came out. Took me three days to realize there was more than one Z-level. DOY!

Apologies for the bump.
This worldset gives a second completely uninhabited continent in addition to the mainland. The continent is rather small, but contains a variety of biomes including mountains and areas without aquifers. Perfect for a little peace and quiet.
