Ridiculous laws are notoriously hard to enforce.

Yeah.  If it does get passed, it'll probably get to the Supreme Court in no time flat and, if there's enough publicity, the outcry will be strong enough to get it declared unconstitutional.  Which it is.

Interesting - So, basically, homosexuality could be labeled as wrong if it detracted from someone else's life.

I just had an idea about why homosexuality could be fundamentally wrong in Christianity.  I'll try to explain it with the hopes that it'll be insightful rather than insulting or demeaning - It's an attempt to play along with the premise/conclusion game.

Family is a large part of most Christian communities, and even the teachings in the bible.  The ability to procreate is considered sacred, and so should not be abused.  If you believe that one purpose of a family is to give more people the opportunity to come to earth, learn, and grow (Assuming that our being here is part of God's plan), then homosexuality or even celibacy would be wrong.  If you also believe that families can continue to grow after resurrection, then even someone who doesn't have the ability to procreate in this life would have the responsibility to be in a position to be able to do so in the next; so someone who's sterile can't become homosexual by saying that they can't have children anyways.

This is, of course, laying aside the whole self-control and mastery of passions and desires bit, which is also a big part of Christianity.

In the end, whether or not homosexuality is acceptable is dependent on your belief in God and/or your view of the importance of a family and bringing life into existence, whether in this life or the next.  So, to most Christians, homosexuality could/should be seen as less of an act of rebellion as failing to acknowledge the importance of families and giving others the chance to come to earth.  Thus being a homosexual doesn't automatically make you an "evil person".

I hope that makes sense.  I didn't think about it too much - It sort of popped into my head.  I'm not going to claim ownership of or advocate the idea until I can think about it some more (And with school starting tomorrow, I probably won't have time to explain that, not to mention the inevitable misunderstandings :\ ).

And please don't take it out of context - I'm really trying to open up understanding by thinking about what could be causing people to detracting homosexuality.  I'm not trying to tell people that they're wrong and need to mend their ways - In fact, I'm presenting more of an idea than a personal opinion!  Whether or not it's the reason behind the belief that "homosexuality is bad" is still up in the air (To me).

Regardless of where my opinion goes, my previous statements on freedom of choice still stand, of course.  As long as something doesn't affect or harm me, I'm not going to get all worked up about it.

If you don't remember them or haven't read said opinions and don't understand the above line, feel free to browse around for them in this thread.  I think it sums up what a large portion of Christians think.

This was really interesting.  (Ignoring all the religious side discussions - This guy explained it in a manner that made some sense to me in a way that helped me know how to apply it and understand it, which is much more than I can say about the few Zen techniques I've heard of.)

I also wish he'd provided more examples.  He talked about Expressing, Suppressing, and "Cognitive Change" - Rethinking a situation.  He explained you could turn a traffic jam into a positive thing by talking on the phone, or doing yoga, but those aren't problems most of us run into.  Most of us run into people insulting us, making us do things that we don't want to do, or generally direct interactions with people in general.

Watching it again, though, he says you simply "define" or "label" the emotion.  So, if someone is insulting you and you feel uncomfortable, you simply identify that the person is attacking your "Status", "Fairness", and maybe even your "Certainty" social positions, and it's making you angry, and you suddenly understand the situation enough to be able to overcome the emotion that's taking rise in you.

And apparently being too happy could be a bad thing, too.

Very interesting.  I'll have to test some of this stuff out, and watch the video again some time later in the week after trying out some of the stuff he brought up.  Like the blogger stated, it could be life changing.

General Discussion / Re: Eastern Religion
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:44:20 pm »
I meditate semi-regularly, but that's the only eastern ideology I've really picked up.  Nearly everything else would take a great deal of study and learning to really get down, but it's something I wouldn't be averse to.

I think the main difference between Eastern and Western religions is the focus on philosophy - Like Darkmere said, Western philosophy focuses a lot more on the individual "rightness" of an action, while Eastern looks more at self and universe a lot more abstractly.  Neither one is flawed, of course, and they both generally lead to the same thing: Self improvement.  The difference is, where Western culture sees improvement more as a goal with a definitive baseline (Perfection), Eastern culture sees it more as a journey of introspection.

Free Form Schooler: I think some people are so willing to see and point out the flaws (Perceived or not) in others because it mitigates their own flaws.  Kind of a "I'm not so bad, see?" attitude that makes someone feel superior because they don't "suffer" from the same thing, whether it's physical or spiritual.  It's one of the reasons soap operas are so popular - Seeing how "bad" other people's lives are makes people feel better about their own.  They just don't understand the stress people go actually go through.

GGamer:  Everyone has a bad day, but we should vent it in a productive way.  You've certainly made this thread a lot more interesting.  :P

I'm sure a lot of the fallout and misconceptions came from your hostile way of presenting your opinions, though.  That automatically sets a lot of people into, "He must fall under the stereotype" mode (Including me).

Man, it's hard to write a well thought out post during these hot debates!  Everything I'm saying is almost a page behind!

The big problem is that people tend to dehumanize anything that they see as abnormal or deviant.  They focus too much on actions and don't realize there's a person behind those actions.  They see someone as different, and immediately don't know what they're dealing with.  It's a problem on all sides of the spectrum, and it's one that breeds misunderstanding, because people are afraid of knowing more about something they don't understand.  Acknowledging that all those who take part in bi- or homosexual activities actually have normal problems, live their lives, work, and are human means that they have to face their own preconceived notions that Good and Evil isn't like what it is in the movies.

As for what's good or evil, I'm not going to tell anyone how to live.  I'm hardly perfect enough to go around saying, "You're 100% wrong and must mend your ways!!"  I don't think anyone is.  I'll give my opinion as politely as possible, sure - But directly try to force someone into a certain attitude or opinion?  Never.

I just hope you guys don't think that every Christian's going to have the same reaction as GGamer's.  I've known a lot of people from different Christian faiths, but the portion that ignore the whole "love their neighbor as thyself" of the Bible is rather small.  The majority likely disapprove, but they're not the kind to swear at and hate those that swing a little different to them.

Reaching a relationship of understanding requires effort on both sides, I think.  We're allowed to have differing opinions and beliefs, but that doesn't mean we automatically can't get along together.

Wow, I turn around for a couple hours and GGamer went and declared war on the world.

Saying that we're "programed" to sin seems like you're saying that God designed us to sin, meaning that he's responsible for all sin.  I'm all for interpretation of the Bible, but it seems like you're saying God's responsible for homosexuality because he designed us to be that way, so at least be consistent.  Also check out "loving your neighbor", "turning the other cheek", and also the part about being condemned and justified by your words (I'm sure God doesn't swear).

Try casting out that beam before pulling motes out of peoples' eyes.  I'm certainly not perfect, but at least I'm not demanding people line up to my ideology.  If they want my honest opinion, I'll give it to them, but I'm not going to look down on them for choices they've made.  We're all sinners.

As for the whole public displays of affection bit, I'd be uncomfortable with anyone doing it, hetero-, homo-, or whatever, but not overly so.  Lesbians used to kiss in the middle of lunch at my old high school, and I just ignored it.  Straight people also used to kiss in the hallways, and I didn't react any differently.  Doesn't affect me, right?

(Holy frikkin' ninjas, 10 11 posts while I was writing that!  Where did you guys come from?!)

General Discussion / Re: Martial Arts / Martial Arts Philosophy / etc
« on: June 04, 2011, 02:41:31 pm »
I think the point of martial arts isn't to "win" a fight - It's to discipline yourself.  There's different styles and philosophies, but all of them point towards mastering your mind, spirit, and body rather than domination.  From what I understand, Asian culture is more about the capability of their own self than Western culture - Eastern culture tends to see weapons or fighting styles as an extension of body or will, while Western culture focuses on the style or weapon as a tool to further one's will.

So, combat has some part in Martial Arts, but a fight is more of an opportunity to improve oneself rather than just come out on top.  If martial arts were really all about winning, then it would have devolved into a gun competition a long time ago.

As long as we understand the difference between what defines a party and what defines a person doing something legitimately wrong.

Whether or not a Republican or a Democrat has some scandal (Involving money, sex, or both) has no bearing on their class.  We're not going around saying that all Democrats are crazed sex addicts based purely on "insider information" and some mistakes that people have made, and neither are we going around saying that all Republicans are greedy sons-of-guns based on the same things (Mistakes and "inside info").  Either one would be insanely presumptuous, no matter what one's class preference, because both parties have the same "human" fallacies.  Both Republicans and Democrats have sex scandals, bad money, and a bunch of other things that result from human nature, not their party affiliation.

We also need to understand that the people who go about forcing their views and ideologies on others are wrong.  I would not condone anybody forcing someone to do anything against their will in an effort to "change" them, no matter the excuse.  I wouldn't support a school making people heterosexual as I would someone trying to make others homosexual.  They're both on the same degree of wrong.

What we need to do is realize that someone who disagrees with us is not automatically an enemy.  They simply have a differing opinion, and we should respect their opinion, whether or not we see merit in it.  Refusing to see both sides of the story will make us blind.  I'm tired of the "us versus them" mentality - It gets tiring.

Sorry for the off-topic rant on "othering".

I'm not Republican, actually.

Surprise!

You're just doing the "othering" that Vector mentioned without presenting any proof beyond your "insider" information.
