Life Advice / Re: Heeeellllp!

She's very persuasive :(

Looks like she's already won, man.  *Snicker*

I'd suggest playing FarmVille with here and pointing out all the stupid little oddities, discrepancies, and lack of features.

"Oh, my plants need watering again?  I just watered them five seconds ago!"

"Is there an option to get a real job in this game?  Like, one where you take some dwarves out into the wilderness and survive harsh winters and death from every side?"

"My character hasn't eaten for eight weeks.  In good games, people starve and die when that happens."

"Can I craft an axe or something?  I want to kill my cows for some beef and make some kitten skin boots.  Sure beats milking and eggs.  Again."

And so on.  Be witty, but not overbearing.  If she keeps forcing you to play, she may be trying to "cleanse" you of Dwarf Fortress.  Don't fall for it.

Also.  She might be onto us.  Keep an eye out.

Life Advice / Re: So I'm starting a running routine...

Also, more weight = More Bulk, and lower weights = More Tone.

Preferably, you'd want a balance, unless you're a runner who doesn't want to bulk up.  Then you just try to make your tendons stick out a little bit more.

Most zombie games go for a modern setting because it's more "shocking" to see something you're familiar with, such as people in T-Shirts and jeans, large cities, et cetera turned into something twisted and deformed.  I think the modern setting has been done to death as far as First Person Shooters and Zombie games go, though, since most of them are done using the same formula that's been used the past ten years.  We need something different.

A Steam Punk setting would be awesome for a zombie survival game.  You'd have guns, swords, explosives, blimps, planes, flying cities, robots, and maybe even a coherent plot line!  The cities would be industrialized enough to have lots of access to different supplies, materials, and a broad range of magical doodads, and you expect the protagonist to be good at throwing random stuff together (It's Steam Punk: Everyone's a genius!).  Throw in floating cities, an extensive crafting and skill system, and viola!  Instant success.  I'd totally pre-order a game just based on that premise.

He changed the title to say it wasn't a DF clone, saying that it's "inspired by Dwarf Fortress" instead.  It's not a deliberate copy, as the original title implied.

Kind of looks like Oregon Trail: Dwarf Fortress.  Must be the bright primary colors.

I think most people get upset because Dwarf Fortress is kind of a unique game satisfying a niche market, and then people come along and make their "own" version, pretty much making it "Dwarf Fortress, but with X".  If you going to take ideas from another game, do something more than better graphics and slightly different game play.

As it is, people are essentially making copies of DF before slapping a limited number of their own ideas on it.  I don't mind people having pet projects and messing around with code, though - They're welcome to do that.  They can even make and release their own games if they want to, as long as it's original.

But a little tact and explaining what exactly they're doing would go a long way.

Saying someone has a right to something because they have the ability to do something doesn't mean that they have the right.  Just because someone enjoys walking around knocking over mailboxes doesn't mean that they should, and the fact they're having fun doesn't justify the action any more.

As long as your method of fun doesn't negatively impact anyone else (Outside of the terms set by game play), I'm fine with it.  If the game were a free-for-all, though, then there wouldn't be any griefing - There would be the challenge of defending a structure from everybody else.  On a team game, though, it's stupid to be knocking over your "friend's" stuff.

I let people build, I build, but I usually build with the intent to destroy stuff.  If you want to build mansions with statues and paint pictures, I'm fine with that.  You make a great distraction when the enemy comes in and needs something to shoot at.

I hopped on and didn't see anyone.

I'll be back in ~15 minutes.

I've been exploring a fairly large network of caves in a game I just started.  It's crazy how easy it is to get lost, because these tunnels just weave in and out of each other, but there's resources and large, open caves galore.

If anyone's interested, you start out in some snowy place and have to travel a small ways to get there.  It's a great spelunking map - It feels like what all exploration should be in Minecraft.  Lots of lava, water, natural obsidian, and it rewards taking small peeks around places where you wouldn't think you'd find anything, like lakes of magma.

Seed: "Kinetic" (No quotation marks)

Make your way to these coordinates:

X: 198
Y: 53
Z: -579

There should be two holes in the ground nearby.  Just dive and be prepared to dig just a little bit, once you find the opening you'll find a fork in the tunnel.

I only found it because there was a zombie nearby - After hearing him I "cheated" to find him and discovered the place.  F3 is my favorite button, especially since I just keep finding new places to explore down here with it.  I keep getting lost down here.

Merchant: That's a bug that occurs if you drop your tools and then use them.

The government can phone tap me and go through my records all they want - Those silly agents will just get bored out of their minds.  They're going to be spending the tax money in places no one can agree to spend it anyways, might as well drive them crazy while doing it.

That's the thing, though - They don't have the manpower and technology to really make this law effective on a massive scale (Like some people seem to believe), so they have to choose who and what to poke into in order to not overwhelm their limited resources.  I don't think anything's ever really been accomplished by it since it came out, though, so I'm for getting rid of it.  They pretty much legalized something they were already doing just to get ahead of people being upset over privacy issues.

"Look, it's legal!  See?!"

Also, considering that Pres. Obama has continued a number of Pres. Bush's policies, his decision doesn't surprise me at all, but I didn't expect him to be so obvious about it.

I'm enjoying this, Solifuge.

I've always thought that goblins and kobolds needed to be reworked if DMs wanted to have a reason for them not going extinct.

General Discussion / Re: Modern Guys and Honour

I was disappointed when this thread wasn't about taking cheap shots in a fight, a la Hollywood's "underdog" throwing low blows against the more powerful Big Bad.  That's something I'd be willing to get involved in.

Duels, though?  Now-a-days, if you're dueling someone, it's because it's fun, not because you think it'd give you some perceived advantage over another person.  I'm glad we don't have that silly honor system any more - It was stupid and useless in the first place.  These days, we play games and gossip about celebrities rather than shoot each other and talk about shooting each other (Or the lack thereof).

Life Advice / Re: Exercise Routine
« on: May 26, 2011, 10:37:55 am »
You'll probably get some work on the upper body, and the core muscles (Abdomen and back), too, but nothing extraordinary.

If you really want to know what parts a particular exercise is going to affect, you just need to pay attention while working out.  It could be good to know if you wanted to heavily go into biking, for example, because then you could focus on the muscles that you're going to be using by exercising your back, legs, arms, and even grip for the brakes.  Just remember that it's not something you want to worry about excessively if you're just starting out.

Personally, I enjoy getting a more complete workout than focusing on one particular activity, but whatever keeps you motivated is probably what you want to do.

Sugar's the pot-belly maker.  And as a side note, sit-ups don't help much with belly fat.

If you want to lose weight without starving yourself (Extreme diets are bad - Don't do it), you have to do some cardiovascular exercise.  Read the my post in the Running Routine thread for some advice on that - You don't necessarily have to run, you just have to get some repetition going for at least 20 minutes.  Cardio's the hardest workout to get into, but it's definitely worth it.

Mixing up the routine is great, too, especially if you lose interest quickly - Try jogging in place while watching TV, biking, running, swimming, even lifting small weights.  Each exercise works different muscles but still gives you a good aerobic pace.  If you find one that you enjoy more than the others, you can do it more, but it's nice to be well rounded.  Start out slow, but don't be afraid to challenge yourself.
