Life Advice / Re: How should I promote my Youtube channel?
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:27:06 pm »
That said, I don't suppose you'd know if there's some kind of list that details which companies/developers do similar things? That would be very useful to me.

Usually it's best to go on a developer by developer basis, but here's a couple of lists I've found. The first one I think is done by someone here on the forum, the second one has a list of stuff under the video. Either could be out of date, but it's a good start if you're looking to promote companies that are cool about that sort of thing.

Are you monetized? If so, then I really don't recommend posting the Link to the Past videos. Nintendo recently went on an idiot spree and started claiming all videos containing games they've copyrighted as their own, monetizing it if it's not already monetized and taking away advertising income if you did monetize it.

There's also the risk of a company claiming copyright to your material, so do some research behind each game you do to make sure you don't get any strikes against your account. Sometimes you'll find stuff like this, which basically shows that a company is awesome. Be careful with sounds and music in most games, since sometimes those are actually owned by someone and looked for under Google's Content Protection Software. I've heard of problems over trap door sounds, of all things.

With that out of the way, the best way you can promote your videos is just being consistent. Make a schedule and post the videos. Honestly, I don't think folks would care if you made a thread over in Creative Projects about your channel in order to get feedback and get it started. I did that a while ago with my own channel, but I didn't follow up on making more videos. If you're curious, I've got a link in my signature, but I haven't done any videos for a few months and they were mostly things I did to test the waters. Once you're more established you can do what Max White suggests and post in the Play with Your Buddies section.

Once you've got a fair following behind you, you'll want to think about joining a partnership. I don't recommend Machinima, since they've kind of turned into Satan since they became popular, but there's a few other choices. Don't bother until you have about 10k+ subscribers and have a fair bit of consistency on your video schedule, though. No one will be interested until then. If partners are malls, the channels they host are stores. Stores that probably won't pull a profit or stick around for long won't get into the mall, even if that mall has no real size limit.

The big thing about being in a partnership is that it pretends to help protect you from copyright trolls and promotes your use of gaming video as Fair Use as you go on to more prominent games. None of them do a very good job of it unless you end up on the level of Total Biscuit or some such (And even then folks like Total Biscuit, commentator on one of the most popular gaming channels on YouTube, can have a problem with it), but it's better than nothing. Most importantly being a partner helps your videos get promoted by other creators within the same partnership.

So just keep trucking. From what I've seen your videos are pretty good. You've got a non-American accent, which is one of the more consistent signs of success in the YouTube market, so you've already got more going for you than I do. You may consider editing the videos down to only the interesting bits, but it's totally up to you. Generally when I do videos every hour of game play gives me about ten minutes of usable video, but there's so many ways to do it it doesn't really matter. Just do what you love you'll be successful. Unless what you love isn't loved by everyone else, but you know.

As for the friend who already has a channel, take advantage of that in the cleverest way possible: Do videos together. For example, play a game where part of the video is on his channel, and the other part is on yours. Like, play a multiplayer game of Tomb Raider with two matches, with one match on each channel. YouTubers working together is probably one of the best ways to increase viewership for both of them, because it means that if someone watching his channel likes you, or someone watching your channel likes him, you'll both win out. Just don't do the "yeah, check out my friends' channel for no reason other than I say so". Just, "This is my friend, here we are playing a game together, link to his own channel in the description in case you cared".

If you liked Payday 1 and thought it could use more customization (Like masks and gun mods) and skill trees, then you'll like Payday 2.

The only thing that they didn't improve on was making the heists quite as epic as they felt in the first one, but I get the feeling they were going for humble origins rather than epic-heist fest. Maybe it'll get more epic as the DLC comes out, but we'll see. I'm honestly hoping for a 7-day heist at that passes the White House at some point, since you can't not do that in a game set in DC.

Without smooth talker, you can only answer two pagers. With it, you can answer four. It's important to note that if one teammate has smooth talker and the other doesn't, the guy who doesn't can answer the first two, but he can't answer any after that. Only the guy with smooth talker can. Very rarely I've heard of it messing up, but I'm pretty sure those stories were just a guy who stopped answered the page before it was finished rather than a bug.

You also have to be careful because having people freak out can cause a chain reaction as other people witness the people freaking out, and then more people witness those people freaking out. On most street heists, four civilians or so will spawn and walk the streets unless you tie them up or kill them. If you don't tie someone down, certain civilians will get brave and try calling the police. Keep an eye out for people that tend to move around a lot or don't listen very well. I think they tend to be the ones that try to play hero, but it's hard to tell.

I've found in the Jewelry heist it usually isn't even necessary to go into the back room, much less the alleyway. Just melee the one guard that usually hangs out in front, answer his pager while your buddy handles the civvies, and start running jewels to the car. Keep people in the street down and watch for guards in the alleys or civilians coming up from the back room and you're golden; no extra pagers need to be answered. I've solo'd it in stealth before with only hitting the front room; with two guys it should be much easier.

If you desperately need some cards or just want to rush through some missions, do Four Stores and bring an ECM jammer. You can hack the ATMs and get $22k from them, which will instantly summon the escape van. Sometimes he shows up before the first assault, making it an easy and consistent way to farm mods and stuff.

And trust me when I say that the game will get easier. Just ditch the starting weapons ASAP and maybe find a couple more people you don't mind playing with. Despite everyone's complaints, most of the randoms I've run into haven't been that bad and the size of my friends' list has doubled since I started playing. I'd offer to play with you guys, but I'm level 80-something.

I had someone accuse me of hacking in Planetside 2 after I killed him a single time. He even claimed that they had video of it, but when I asked him what good a video would do when he wasn't even looking at me, he didn't respond.

It's kind of funny, because I'm not even that good at the game.

I just find stealthing incredibly boring and unrewarding. I'm spec'd for it with dominator and smooth talker just in case, but it's one of those things where I'd rather spend my time shooting stuff and having fun rather than reliving horrible stealth memories from action games.

Did this game ever get the upgradable hideout they mentioned before release?

Not yet.

WD had a specific release date. Both AC4 and WD were scheduled to come out on November 19th for the PC.

I'm starting to wonder if it's becoming standard practice to delay games beyond their promised release date, though. It's probably something to get investors more interested, since they probably want something more specific than "Oh, some time eventually within 2 to 4 years..."

The engineers on the team probably know what's going on and have a much more honest idea of when the game will come out, but that's why engineers aren't typically the same guys that do marketing.

Watch Dogs has been delayed until "Spring 2014", which is a vague date usually reserved for games that were just announced. I'm disappointed, but I get the feeling this is a good thing. There didn't seem to be much there beyond screwing around and the main story line. It also explains why it hasn't popped up on Steam for preorder yet, which had me worried Ubisoft was going to try to make Watch Dogs the champion of its Steam-like service. I won't be surprised if there's more delays, but I doubt Ubisoft will allow it to go too long without a release. At least they seem to be willing to give it time to be polished.

It's also a good thing since I won't have to decide between AC4 and WD now. (Both had the same PC release date.)

All of the 3-day jobs pay pretty well, but Framing Frame just takes so long to stealth that it's almost not worth it with all the times you have to restart because "whoops, set off the alarm". No matter how good your crew is, it relies a lot on luck. It's gotten to the point where I don't do Framing Frame anymore. The stealth is too wonky since the game is balanced and designed for combat. It's just not fun.

Rats is probably the quickest if you're willing to blow up the lab on the first day, rush the apartments on the second day, and steal all the money on the third day. You could probably rush two rounds of Rats in the time it takes you to do one round of Framing Frame and get something close to double the payout and experience.

Not a whole lot going on with the game, but there's been a few updates since the last post nearly a month ago. There was an overhaul on weapons and skills, so you can see the actual numbers behind them rather than bar graphs and vague descriptions.

Of particular interest is today's update, which adds a casino temporarily where you can drop your Off-Shore funds for cards. I finally got a couple of weapon mods I'd been looking for since the game began this way. This is probably the big one, in case anyone wanted to drop $25 million in Off-Shore cash for each extra card.

You can also join the Payday 2 group today (This weekend?) and get an incredibly ugly mask.

That doesn't mean we should prop everything he says up on a pedestal just because he was a smart guy. Even smart guys are wrong sometimes, and ethics are one of those things that varies between even the smartest guys. If you decide to become a vegetarian just because Einstein was and with no reasoning beyond that, that's no different than deciding not to eat eggs just because Einstein didn't like eggs.

Yeah, that's what happened.

The big problem was that I pinned a lot, emotionally, on that job. After the interview I was pretty happy for the first time in months.

I kinda wish my relative hadn't told me. It was nice being happy for a minute.

Went to an interview today. It was pretty promising, got my hopes up real high. The interviewers seemed really responsive, and I felt like I nailed it. One lady even showed me around the offices, and showed me where a relative works.

Relative comes home, says that they told her they didn't think I had enough experience. Not sure why I bother.

Life Advice / Re: Bamboo Tablet Drawing Program
« on: October 17, 2013, 09:11:32 pm »
Unless the Bamboo is very different from Wacom's other tablets, there should be a Customize button in the options along with a little graph that you can fiddle with. Just set it so that the pen is 100% sensitive, no matter how hard you push. You'll have to adjust the graph to be at the top all the way across.

If you just want it to be a temporary thing, check the Brush settings. I'm not sure about Gimp, but Photoshop has some options for pen pressure and brush size under Shape Dynamics.

I've actually sat down and started drawing stuff more often thanks to this thread. Not quite ready to post my drawings (Done in Photoshop with a tablet), but I'm rather pleased with how they're turning out so far. Today I finally figured out a method of shading in Photoshop that I was comfortable with, and it's got me pretty happy with myself. Faces no longer look like they've been ravaged by fire after I shade them.

I've mostly been drawing women since that's where my people-drawing skills are weakest. Before I kind of haphazarded my way through womens' faces and breasts, and now they look like something a real human might have. It's strangely therapeutic looking at a woman in an aesthetic way rather than a sexual way.
