To quote Reagan, "The government is not the solution to our problem; the government is the problem."

Thinking that there's any magical government that can perfectly unite most countries, especially the way the world is today, is absurd.  Any unification of two countries would have to be something that the people would want, not what the government wants.  The biggest problem is the huge amount of opinions that amount to, "My way or...  Wait, there is no other way!"  If people would settle down and take a serious look at opposing views and consider the implications of each, then I think a large amount of the problems that separate not only the US and Canada, but every individual from his neighbor, would be a whole lot easier to get around.

People are just too contrary to form themselves under one government.  It's amazing that a country like the United States has survived so long, all things considered.  I think nationalism plays a huge role in that, as it does in any stable country.  To take that away by merging two countries with so little thought as to the feelings of the people at large would surely splinter both already divided countries.  It would be a disaster, and I bet the leaders of our respective nations know it.

Once people begin to recognize the merit of a conflicting point of view, then we can start talking about unifying nations.  Short of that, we'd need a very large, powerful, alien force to make this world form itself under one government.  Even then, it would be accented by war, decent, and rampant terrorism, because people simply wouldn't understand.  Right now, they - we - just don't want to.

Just don't swamp yourself if you feel overwhelmed.  I'd hate to see you burn out over extremities like this.

I've always thought that Canada and the 'States were similar enough to warrant a union of the two.  If nationalism ("Canada sucks!" "The US sucks!") wasn't so prominent, there wouldn't be a problem.

But it sounds more like a "Let's be better friends" than "Let's get married and transfer both of our minds into our first child".  Too bad.

Sorry if I made my post sound too negative.  I was mostly trying to point at the fact that YouTube is a more widely viewed medium than any blog, so it would have been a fair idea to acknowledge DF there in anticipation of the people who won't read your blog.  I understand the need to test your program with a variety of objects, but it did seem a little unfair that the people who only viewed your video and didn't bother to read your blog should think that the game, as it is right now, doesn't contain 100% self-inspired content.  Noting that DF was a huge inspiration, or at least a big source, when using a new medium from the get-go, even if it seems redundant and annoying, could have saved a lot of grief and misunderstanding - You seem to know how the internet works, so it's best to avoid problems before they start.  With so little time in a day, you can hardly blame people for not reading your blog.

That was my major beef.  Having created new settings in fiction, I understand that it's impossible to do something that doesn't draw inspiration from something else, so I have no problem with the game you're making in and of itself.  Just tread a little more cautiously, next time - Sometimes people look for any reason to get an argument started and ignore any number of unlikely outcomes.

I think the biggest concern here was a mix of your ambiguous, "I might make money off of this" that certain people pulled off your blog with too little mention that DwarvesH was going to be completely different, or at least different enough, from DF.

Thanks for coming here and clarifying, though.  It's good to see you aren't afraid to take a little heat.

...And why in the world did you capitalize the "H" in Dwarvesh?  That bugs the heck out of me.

I like it, honestly.  Develop a style and stick with it.

Kudos for drawing the toy boats individually.

I just got this game.  I have to say: It's awesome.

I haven't even touched multiplayer, yet.

The fact that publishing companies have more lobbyists than pirates do might have something to do with it.

That's cool.  I might look up one of his books, now.

I think it'd be interesting to see if there were a difference in mediums, though.  Books and video games tend to attract different people (With exceptions, of course).  Would the differences in audience affect video game sales the same way they affected Neil Gaiman's book?  I could easily download and read books for free on my computer, or on an e-reader, but I prefer having the paper in front of me and getting away from the LED screens for a while.  The most I've done is glance at a couple of books that I was considering buying.

Many computer games don't even come with anything physical anymore, so the same businesses that sell the games are discouraging that feeling of having something solid to go along with your purchase.  Why should people want to buy a game at all when downloading it illegally is just as easy as buying and downloading it off of the company's website?

I've never illegally downloaded a game, and I don't plan to, but I have to wonder if Gaiman's thoughts could be applied to a medium so different as video games.  I wish someone were trusting enough with the community at large to try it out.

I still think the sales lost from Piracy is marginal - Most of the people who download stuff illegally wouldn't buy it legitimately in the first place.

How many people do think they're missing the point?

Touché.

I did do a poor job of explaining myself the first time - But my point still stands.  More people are going to watch a video about something than read an entire blog about it.
