Other Games / Re: DF Clones

Which somehow got me thinking.  Why has no one made a DF clone in scifi?  They tend to stick with the same time period and the same short people.  Y U NO Robots?

Aurora... sort of. Lots of depth and complexity, but a much larger scale than DF.

That's what makes be think we need DF in space. SS13 would be so much more fun if it was a bunch of people running around trying to build a spacestation rather than throwing poo in each other's fa(e)ces.

A couple of people have tried to get BS12 to have a gamemode like that, but it never took.

I'd love to play a consistent(ish) server for a week or so, starting from scratch in a small mining colony with a pickaxe and a spacesuit each and building as much of a station as possible in that time.

My first thought upon seeing your post was "Bro... alright?".

Essentially meaning, dammit Deathworks! We were on a roll! You had to come in and be the good guy, giving advice and generally being more helpful than the rest of us. I hope you feel bad, knowing that you helped a new swedish forumite adapt to the ways of rome bay12. Burn in the bliss of afterlife, you helpful heathen!

X-plore your surroundings.
X-pand your empire/civilisation/race/collection of gumdrops.
X-ploit the resources around your newly expanded empire.
X-terminate, X-terminate!

Is it just me or is Baystation 12 dead?

I stopped playing just before the codeswitch a few months ago. Maybe the new reliance on /tg/ code killed it.

Other Games / Re: A Question on Pirating Games
« on: November 24, 2012, 07:16:48 pm »
One of the first games I pirated was Left 4 Dead. My computer was basically a block of plastic with a HDD in it back then, so I wanted to see if it'd work. Much to my surprise (and joy) it ran nearly perfectly. I played the first level, deleted the game and bought it off steam. I was happily playing along in multiplayer the next day with three other people who would become some of my closest friends.

As everyone else has said, I see no problem pirating games from large companies like EA. They're already rich, it's not like they need my $60 to pay their rent. I always laugh when someone says "but they need that money!". For what? Another crappy, over-hyped game I'll play for ten minutes and never hear from again?

When it comes to more trustworthy developers, that's where the line gets blurry. If a company has a reputation for making good games with good post-release production and customer service, I'd much rather support them with real money to encourage them to keep doing a good job. It's always sad to see a brilliant company go under because their games weren't point and click adventures with modern graphics.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: mushrooms
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:32:20 pm »
Just keep chopping them. This will give you a good supply of wood, as well as keeping them in check. I *think* that putting a door
to the cavern and chopping all of the mushrooms outside of it will stop the mfrom spreading further.

Nope, cavern plants spread via spores. They'll start spreading once the caverns are opened and will never stop.

To the OP, you could try placing roads. I'm pretty sure that stops any further spread unless you muddy them up.

And yes, Necromancer is at war with anyone that's too close. Well, except for other Towers, apparently.

More than one tower at a time is guaranteed Fun.

replace most of your "..." with commas. .

'...' instead of ',' is one of my pet hates. I feel the slightest amount of intense homicidal rage every time I see three periods instead of a comma.

And to EnderCrypt, you seem like you're typing how you speak. The difference between typing and speaking is that when typing, you have time to think about your words and plan them, making sure they make sense in the sentence as a whole. While talking, it's usually just a "words come out i hope they make sense you understand me right?" dealio. At least it is for me.

I think your problem is that you're not using commercial engines. Trust me on this; if you use high-powere engines for survey ships you will run out of fuel very quickly. Heres my GeoSurvey and GravSurvey designs for my current campaign:

Spoiler: LRSUGEO1 (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: LRSUGRV1 (click to show/hide)

Kinda expensivwe to build, but they can last a long time.

Those are really big for survey ships. I guess I'll keep these designs in mind for later game tech.

Also, the Aurora forums. My god. Those people throw around mathematical equations I doubt even a calculator could understand like nobodies business. Every post I read over there, I become more and more convinced that that's where mathematicians go to play. I also die a little inside, knowing that I will never have any idea what the hell they're talking about.

My survey ships keep running out of full, even though they have 50,000 litre tanks and the order to refuel at 50% fuel. I modified their designs to have 100,000 litres total, but it'll take 9 years to refit each one.

Is there anything else I can do?

I researched the components, I need to figure out how to put them on the ships.

EDIT: Nevermind, a new tab appeared out of nowhere when I created my fourth new ship class :P

You might have accidentally locked the design. In the bottom left of the class design tab is the button for locking and unlocking - try that.

Anyone know how to fix an error to do with my orbiting miner?

Code: [Select]
Error in OrbitingFleets
Error 11 was generated by aurora
Division by zero

I've tried changing his orbiting distance and even disabling orbit, but that doesn't seem to fix it.

This came up in a bug report over on the aurora forums recently. Move the asteroid miner away from the asteroid then move back using the 'move to' order not the 'orbit' order. The division by zero error is due to the asteroid having a zero gravity, which is being used in calculating how far along it's orbit the ship moves during the increment. The orbit order should generally not be used for most purposes and never used to orbit at a distance of zero as it causes multiple issues.

Will the miner follow the asteroid as it moves if it's not orbiting?

So here is a philosophical question : Is diversification of fleets better than specialization? As in the navy ONLY consists of fast beam ships or battleships with beam OR have a fleet with missile corvettes and carriers and beam ships with geosurveying capibility and stuff like that?

From what I've seen so far, focusing on a single weapon type is the way to go. Researching takes time and you don't really want to wait decades to get high enough beam, missile, armour, shielding etc tech.
