DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ballistas - Seemingly random?
« on: August 05, 2012, 04:47:15 am »
you can very handily combine a dodge/fall trap with a ballista bolt retrieval system

I like to use a dodging pit, combined with multiple ballistas on the sides. It actually works quite well, considering it only uses ballistas and crossbows.

DF General Discussion / Re: Forgetting Suggestions
« on: August 01, 2012, 03:05:50 pm »
I used to think about things that would improve DF, but then I realised the Toady has the mind of Einstein, Socrates, Newton, Jesus and Billy Bob Jimbo from down the road. He's made a game that I would never have comprehended existing. Any of my ideas would be a complete waste of his golden time.  :D

General Discussion / Re: Internet habits which annoy you.
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:13:57 am »
I think one of my greatest annoyances comes from people not understanding what a contraction is. 'Should've' is not 'should of', people! I could have punched everyone that does this, but I would have probably broken my fist.

There's also 'their, they're and there', especially when people say 'there' to substitute for all three. 'There' is a place. 'Their' belongs to them. 'They're' is obviously 'they-are'.

I could go on forever about these, but I'll keep it short with one more: '...' DOES NOT REPLACE A FULL STOP OR COMMA! Please people... don't do this... it's probably giving you cancer...

That's English done. Other that that, there isn't really much I find annoying about the internet.

I'm a little bit of a brony; I like the show, but I'm not a fanboy for it. I think the stories are well written, the characters are fleshed out, the voice acting is very good, and the musical numbers are really damn catchy. I can understand how people would think it's strange for men to like that kind of thing, though. I did too, before I sat down and watched a few episodes with an open mind. The first two episodes, I couldn't stop myself laughing. Then I found that I actually enjoyed the show.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can a baby be a Vampire?
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:42:18 pm »
Quoted from wiki:

Quote
None of your seven starting dwarves will ever be vampires, nor will children or babies, caravans, sieges, ambushes, outpost liaisons, or thieves, but any of the rest of your dwarves can be.

Does this mean they can't be converted by drinking from a vampire blood filled water source?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: shift key
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:36:59 pm »
I've had this problem before. It's incredibly frustrating, and I have no idea what caused it or how I fixed it. It could be something like a ghost keypress (computer thinking you have capslock on when you don't, for example) I guess.

Sounds like a problem with your keyboard and not DF. Pressing shift+an arrow key makes your cursor move like, 6 or 7 tiles in the chosen direction, by the way.

Eleven tiles, actually. Or ten, depending on how you count it.

I've seen twelve year old vampires born a thousand years ago, but I don't know if babies or even children can be vampires.

General Discussion / Night or morning?
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:32:09 pm »
I was just watching a video and someone said "2am on a Tuesday night". This got me to thinking; What did they mean? If it's 2am on a Tuesday, is it Tuesday morning? Did they mean Monday night, but somehow two hours into Tuesday? Was it Tuesday night, but 2am on a Wednesday?

I guess what got me thinking about this is the odd phrasing. I know they meant 2am on Tuesday morning, but I don't know how. The phrase itself makes no sense whatsoever, yet I understood it. It's sort of like saying 'The third one too' (3rd 1 2). I know what it means, I can understand it, but the sentence itself is completely nonsensical.

Anyway, just my random thoughts on a random subject. Let me know what you think!

Just like fish, it's possible that you've hunted your wildlife to extinction. Have you actually got any wild animals on the map?

Noone has said elf.

Call them pixies. They hate being called pixies.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Designated Lever Puller
« on: July 30, 2012, 03:24:12 pm »
Or you could build all of your levers in a sealed room with a vampire. No need for food or drink, so they won't starve, and they live for eternity so they're always there when you need them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Easy FPS efficiency tips?
« on: July 30, 2012, 03:13:53 pm »
Has there been any science on whether pasturing is as effective as caging?  Although I guess if a creature is caged, it won't break out of its pasture and require a dwarf to put it back.

Animals still path in a pasture, so caging is definitely better.

No idea why he's chasing them around, but the best way would be to burrow the mason and try to atom smash the birds without harming the mason. He'll get a pretty bad thought from this, so make sure you put him under your waterfall for a few seconds.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pitfall+upright spears
« on: July 28, 2012, 02:35:22 pm »
Great, since some people claim that the upright spears have no effect at all.

In the old version, they had to be connected to a lever or some other activation mechanism before they caused damage, though it might have changed in the current version.

You can run DF on practically anything. You'll only encounter issues if you have a big map, alot of dwarves or some sort of large-scale liquid movement. Other than that, you should get reasonable FPS on a potato.

A cap is basically a bowl with a strap on it. I'd go with copper helms instead.

Also, the description is purely aesthetic. You could have spikes of dragon bone on a steel shield and all you'd get is a cool image of the weight your dwarves are carrying into every engagement.
