DF General Discussion / Re: Hello, have one question.

I wonder what happens to all the scrap after a craftsdwarf manages to make an earring out of a huge stone which OTOH can be turned into four blocks by a mason. ^^

It's obviously a really big earring.

I lock all my vampires in a 24/7 danger room. I've even contemplated turning unwanted migrants into vampires just for quick and easy combat training without worrying about thirst or hunger, or main fortress tantrum spirals, considering they won't have met other dwarves first.

It appears that the maximum possible grid size is 256x256, and you've run into that limit.
Well I hope Toady can add support for a scalable grid in the future then. Guess I'll just have to play 3 seperate forts at the same time.
He did add support for a scalable grid back in version 0.28.181.39f (released August 9, 2008 - before then, it was hardcoded to 80x25) - it's just that he never expected somebody would want a grid size larger than 256x256...

He's obviously never met a 21st century computer dwarf.

"256x256? Screw that, my computer can run more, SO GIVE ME MOAR, DAMMIT!"

They feed their beards with it in order to keep the furnaces clean.

I've found that if three beds are in a corner and a dwarf is asleep in the corner bed, vampires can feed on them with impunity. The solution is just to remove one of the beds on either side.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Urist's left hand is missing!
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:40:17 pm »
Dwarves can carry a shield and weapon with only one hand. In fact, if you abuse the game a little, you can get your dwarves carrying quite a few weapons with one finger.

Losing a limb in battle (or otherwise) isn't a big deal. Lose an arm, you've got the other one. Lose that one too, you've got your feet. Lose one of those, you can use a crutch (assuming you still have hands). Lose the other one, you crawl around. Lose all your limbs and you use your tentacle-like teeth to pull yourself along the ground, and you can even fight with those things. I've had biter dwarves dominate entire goblin sieges because of the buggy stats of teeth.

As a matter of fact, losing a foot can be a good thing. Because the dwarf will move around using a crutch (which trains their agility), by the time they're legendary crutch-walkers they actually move faster than other dwarves. Things like this is why people purposely maim and disfigure their dwarves.

I have my maximum child cap limited to 10, and they also grow to adults in two years.

The init files are a brilliant thing.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Nobles (crush them or not?)
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:25:31 pm »
Preferences definitely count, though.  Mayor Blob was awesome.  Strapped with massive amounts of muscle and lard, a powerful consoler and pacifier, and all he needed to be happy was coffins.  Not like I ever export those anyway, but I'll certainly be building 'em.

My current mayor is a vampiress. She's locked away, obviously, but everyone seems to like her even though they've never met her. She also demands that I make shields practically nonstop.

Fortunately, her favorite metal is copper. It just so happened that I have half a dozen artifact copper armor pieces in my fort, one of which is a shield. I put her in the military, gave her the copper, then sent her into my permanent danger room in her palace at the bottom of the map.

I plan to keep her training until the inevitable death of my populace, at which point I'll release her and pull a Urist, slowly converting all migrants to my own private army of vampires.

Make blocks from your stones. Dwarves can haul blocks much faster.

Never before have blocks been so useful. They save so much time.

Yeah, I know.  What I'm really worried about is FB's made of fire or some equally awkward material.  I don't really want to have an impossible-to-kill FB wandering around down there.

A floor dropped on the head is usually a sure-fire way to kill everything. If that doesn't work, magma is the obvious next choice. Preferably in quantities that some would call 'overkill', but I just call joyful. The more the merrier, as they say!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Beekeeping worth it?
« on: June 26, 2012, 11:10:04 pm »
It's an amusing novelty, and it can help a little with alleviating "tired of drinking the same old booze" thoughts, but no.  It's not worth the dwarves, time and resources invested, and certainly not something you can live on.  Save it for when you've got surplus everything, dwarves included.

If the bugs with it ever get fixed I'm probably going to try to make a fortress live on it alone again, though.
What but are you talking about?

Dwarves have trouble keeping track of the status of wild hives.  They will go to the obsolete site of a wild hive that was destroyed to fill a constructed hive, and stand around scratching their ass looking for bees until they get killed by a wild animal or invader.  They will fail to notice new wild hives that form.  Sometimes you can fix this behaviour by deconstructing all artificial hives that may be asking for bees and then rebuilding them, but other times even that doesn't help.

I usually just give a dorf the beepkeeper labor and let him do his thing. I had no idea it was buggy.

Does it work without issues if you fill one hive, then seal it (and the beekeeper) off from the outside world, using the first hive to split and spread into the other ones?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Duchess unhappy with improper dining room
« on: June 25, 2012, 10:48:40 pm »
By the way a noble who doesn't have their wants met only gains unhappy thoughts. They don't have any innocent/guilty dwarves punished. So there's no need to arrange an unfortunate accident, at worst the noble will just go insane by themselves.

They usually get all uppity if they don't have the best your fortress can provide, though. A rampaging monarch is bad news for fortress happiness, considering the fact that most of them have high social skills, which means many friends to console at the funeral.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Building walls, Micromanaging nightmare
« on: June 25, 2012, 10:46:33 pm »
I'm using 34.11 and I just build an aboveground compound with walls, so it must be an uncommon bug.

When building in DF, it helps to know which direction dwarves prefer to move in. It can be a little random at times, but it's usually pretty reliable.
