DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: horse trading?

Better yet, you can fill the hospital's ICU ward with cage traps.
Let the Elves be torn apart by the vengeful ghosts, and save yourself the trouble of tombs and slabs.

I'd suggest building a giant hand of Armok sticking out from the bottom of the waterfall, with lots of grates to let the flow through.
May Armok catch you when you fall, and may all thine loot be recovered.

DF Suggestions / Re: Make "...has been missing for a week" more useful
« on: April 04, 2012, 08:53:34 pm »
I have to agree that the "has been missing for a week" means they are guaranteed dead.
It would certainly be nice if friends could report a dwarf missing to whomever is in charge.

Does the "passing acquaintance" to "close friend" scale take into account how *often* a dwarf is seen rather than just how many times they have met?

If so, then that naturally gives a source for how long a relation would wait before reporting the dwarf missing.
Passing acquaintances might never inquire about each other.  (Hey, remember that creepy Urist McHermit guy?  No?  Me neither.)
Long-term Acquaintance should ask around after not seeing that person for a season.  (Say, what happened to Urist McMiner?  I haven't seen him do that sewer-brew trick in ages!)
Friends should start asking around after a month.  (Is Urist McParty sick or something?  He's missing happy hour!)

4x4 with bed, 1x fragment of the common booze stockpile, and 2x fragment of the common prepared meal stockpile.
(Designated a huge stockpile across the whole level, and then deleted tiles from it as needed, to reduce FPS cost and make it easier to manage)
Plus an individual 4x4 burrow restricting the migrants to their room.

Plenty of Room (and free booze / food) at my Hotel California.

Why not have the pump slosh the water around to somewhere else in the pool so it doesn't run out?
The mist as it splashes back into the pool will generate happy thoughts too!

Here's another possibility that I came across while trying to dig through a multi-level aquifer.
1) Channel a drain tile to the second aquifer level.
2) Dig out a room in the first aquifer to an appropriate size.  (TBD)
3) Designate a construction in the room to be removed.

Dwarves will run in and try to deconstruct the wall, only to be washed away from it.  At that point they lose their work progress and gain swim skills.  I don't think they can cancel the designation, so it should be completely automatic.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Evicting traders early?
« on: April 01, 2012, 04:17:00 pm »
Yeah, the point is not to upset them, but to keep them happy and bringing lots of stuff.  While getting in and out quick.

What I want is a timeline something like:
1st Obsidian: Lever is pulled to convert entrance from "deathtrap" to "wagon-safe", since traders are due any day now.
12th Obsidian: Traders arrive on map.
20th Obsidian: Goods are all deployed in depot, broker completes deals.
21st Obsidian: Make traders start leaving.
25th Obsidian: Traders are past the bridge, Lever is pulled again to convert the entrance from "wagon-safe" to "deathtrap"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: FPS death by river
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:09:32 pm »
Why not wait for winter, then put some floodgates in at the downstream edge?
After the spring thaw, you can let the river fill up to solid 7's before letting it flow again.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Evicting traders early?
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:40:28 pm »
Once I'm done trading, I'd like to get the merchants moving on their way as soon as possible.

If they're quite happy with the trading, and I give them a gift, and then seize the cheapest trinket they have, they'll definitely leave in a huff.

Will they actually get upset about that, or will they realize once they've left that they've made quite a profit and come back with more stuff next year?

Some other things that might be handy for a quick-tallies list:

A toggle for value rather than count of items.  (Mostly for the trade stockpiles)
An option to filter the tally to only include items that are in certain burrows (How much booze is left in the deep mines, vs in the surface guard post?)
Rather than just items, liquids would be nice to include (How much water is left in the well?  What is the state of the drowning/magma trap?)

Even if it was, necromancy (when providing a useful addition) is a good thing around here.

DF Suggestions / Re: Trading stacks in fortress mode
« on: March 31, 2012, 01:13:05 am »
I've just been hammering Up, Enter, Up, Enter myself.  (Up, because the stuff I want to trade is at the bottom of the list.  Down should work fine too)
The second up doesn't do anything if it is a stack, but that's OK; nothing breaks, and the whole stack gets selected for trade with the second enter.

What goes wrong with your macro?

Sorting and filtering would certainly be handy in the trade screen, though.
"So, Urist McMountainhome, forget all those plants and cloth; what have you brought us in the way of alcohol, and meltable iron junk this year?"

*sips tea* That first drink of water affords me to embark with a half ton of marble and reforge native iron or claimed goblinite into a significant amount of steel.  A set of steel spears counts heavier than a drink of water.
Bringing a dose of booze for everybody only costs 14 dorfbucks, and if you order now, you get a ☼40 set of barrels free!  Its quite a deal.

Would *you* be happy about wearing -iron chain mail- while you were lacking pants and a loincloth?  :o
