Other Games / Re: why is everquest 2 hated?

Text.

You probably have NO idea how much nostalgia you have wrought upon me.
I never played EQ myself but what you typed in just reeks of early World of Warcraft emulator software.
God i miss those days when both horde and the alliance fought over the right to kill Ragnaros in the middle of MC.

As for EQ2.
I guess EQ "vets" decided the game was too simplified while the "newbs" saw it as a less polished WoW.
This and some odd ideas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG36yC2e5QY&feature=g-logo-xit combined with going more towards WoW with every patch that probably turned away the remaining "vets".

As for using the Phlogistonator in a crowd of bots... i'd like to point out that bots are many times better at organising a focused attack on a taunting pyro than 90% of human teams.
That applies to bots in general. They fight way better than most players I've seen, and would win any PUG you could find out there.
In terms of raw aim and DM, of course an expert level bot would fight better than a player. In terms of actually winning a pick up game, you're mistaken.

The the team has no human players the bots will always gradually switch to Demoman... that's what usually happens when you run a tutorial game and switch to spectator.

The huge problem i see here is... whi the hell this console is for?

Hardcore console gamers are too busy softscoping noobs/fags/each other via X-Bawks and Play Station.
Causual gamers and families with kids most likely already have the Wii (and this console is barely a sidegrade for it).
And people really interested in Indie games most likely already have a PC.

The hardware is also a problem... it especially seems to be somewhat short on RAM.
On the other hand Indie games are rarely very resource hungry.

The best part about playing offensive pyro is my unerring tendency to fill my Mmmph just at the right times. Plus, all those scoped snipers who leave themselves vulnerable to getting a glob of whatever-the-fuck-the-Manmelter-shoots to the skull. Ding ding ding ding...

Plus, even if they kill me, they're likely still on fire, so I get my revenge kill.

You should try playing pyro in non-tutorial-mode.

I find that implication fucking insulting.

I find tutorial mode offensive because my PC cannot run the game at 20+ FPS while managing bot AI at the same time.

As for using the Phlogistonator in a crowd of bots... i'd like to point out that bots are many times better at organising a focused attack on a taunting pyro than 90% of human teams.

A manmelter crit can and will kill a sniper with afterburn unless he gets healed one way or another.

Dorfs are great at smashing buildings and caster monsters.

As for the dragon mission.
I didn't say it's impossible. It's just hard like hell and it only gets worse from that point onward.

This and mission difficulty also depends on the randomness factor.

For example in the mission where you are supposed to defeat some evil wizard (and have to build a lvl 2 mage guild to stop his attacks) a Werewolf attacks your settlement before your heroes level up enough to hurt him.
I barely managed to get through the first werewolf thanks to a high level warrior from the lords hall and several healers spamming heals on him.

Hillariously enough i didn't even notice when my heroes killed that werewolf the first time i played this mission.

The rake seems usefull for medics to get their Uber charged since loading it slows down once they fully overheal someone.
And since the pyro is healed slower than the rest he will last a bit more before the medic has t look for somoene else to heal.
Beseides it's kickass for Melee servers i guess.

The volcano fragment is pretty much useless unless on a melee only server and teamed up with another pyro (you have a freaking flamethrower so why whack them with a blunt axe?).

The axtinguisher/mailbox is the most basic weapon for a pyro ever (for obvious reasons)

I've played a couple hours of Majesty 2... I guess what bores me is that every mission is "the same". There's not a lot you can do, and there does not seem to be that much tactical variety or choices. Place your favourite guild, recruit, yadda yadda. I guess it's about optimising what you place and when you place it. Maybe I'm not looking deep enough?

Yea, I suppose majesty just isn't for you. The first game is similar; like said before, it is a lot like GROW. You need to build everything in the right order, recruit at the right times, etc. It remains challenging because there are a ton of different starting scenarios, ranging from extremely hard to extremely easy; you'll always have to be adjusting what and where you build.

I don't know if 2 had these also, but for 1 you did get some tactical variety out of spells. Each temple you build not only lets you recruit followers of the temple, but also spells that temple provides. Using the right spells at the right time to improve the chances of your heroes coming out on top can be quite fun.

I agree the game is a little repetitive; while there's always something for you to get better at, you are very limited in what you can do and in the end the gameplay is roughly the same regardless. I find it quite worth it though, especially if you can enjoy the gameplay that is there.

2 has a little less of teh "build perfectly or die" due to the "Lords Hall" building that serves as a guild for up to 3 heroes you can "export" from older maps meaning you can get a lvl 20 mage into the field in the very first several minutes of the game.

Then there are artifacts you recover during the campaign that basically serve as additional spells.

HOWEVER... some missions are HELL.
For example there is one mission where you are supposed to kill a dragon that just happens to be immune to just about everything and comes every few minutes over to destrou some of your buildings.
That alone wouldn't be actually that bad but there are also tens of beast dens spawning HUGE numbers of drakes ALL the time.

You get swarmed by 10 of those things before you complete the typical buildup (market healer guild warrior guild).
Total freaking madness.

Yeah Majesty both 1 and 2 is a bit like GROW type games where you have to build up your town almost perfectly in order to survive.

As for the game itself...

It is probably the only game where you have to pamper heroes as a lord/king instead it being the other way.

Also... Warriors of Discord.
Dear god i love those psychos if only for their hillarious stupidity.

I don't want any of those but since i'm a total newbie to giveaways i'd want to ask one question...

What's the point beside being randomly generous?
Do you get those games from steam as a bonus for free or something?
I'm asking because i don't thnk anyone would buy a game only to organise a giveaway and give it to a random person (possibly even a stranger).

Majesty 1 and 2.
Not nearly like DF but still fun... till you start doing missions from the expansion (majesty 1) or the hard ones (majesty 2).
Seriously if you manage to defeat the dragon or rat king without restarting the game at least 10 times then i salute you.

Alien Nations 1 and 2.
Simplified DF or Settlers with more complexity.

Enemy Nations.
Not really fantasy but it kinda fits. Several spacefaring races fight over the last uncolonized but habitable planet in the universe.
However instead of waging a huge pangalactic war over it they decide to send one ship filled with the most basic technology materials and manpower to build a city and wipe out other races.
It's kinda like Settlers meet Simcity meet Red Alert.

SHOGO:MAD has some Mecha driving segments.

The bonesaw has a higher crit rate than Amputator... and probably Solemn as well.

Then again i like my +1 health regen from the amputator and crossbow.

And i really like the crossbow... if only headshots with it would crit...

SR is a clear upgrade when you have at least several seconds to prepare for the enemy (most likely defense) and have to block off several paths at once.
However it fails in a direct firefight due to the longer arm time, and having to look at the stickies to detonate them can cause additional delay that might be the differeence between blowing up a scout and not hitting anything with them.

Then again you still have the grenade launcher.

Other Games / Re: Caribbean! (naval action-RPG à la M&B)
« on: July 04, 2012, 05:40:15 am »
I remember Corsairs. I also remember the game had a gamebreaking bug that probably never got fixed.

If you had a ship witl let's say 100 cargo space you could load upto 100 units of cargo. However it counted for all types of cargo SEPERATELY so you could load 100 coppr 100 silk 100 jewelery... basically 100 everything.

And to make things worse white colonies ALWAYS bought everything at a premium.
And things got worse in the second mission where you have a white colony right next to your city.

As for the Carribean!
It kinda looks like a very well made mod for M&B... but then again it's the same engine and it gives hope it will work on my coal powered PC.
The pirate genre has a lot of potential to dig up so it might be a huge success.
