DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: July 08, 2009, 02:47:40 am »
1. Start with more then one pickaxe/miner.

For a while now I've only started with one miner(often, an unskilled miner, 'cause they're so easy to train), but brought 7 cheap copper picks - no worries about lost picks, and I can retask other dwarves to mine temporarily if I want to quicken my start.

Also: emergency weapons. Enable mining befor conscription and recruits should use the pick and their mining skill to attack.

does anyone have a link for Sean Mirrsen's "all economic stones" minimod? I have looked everywhere on this site and can't find it....

I have it bookmarked.

Best. Mod. Ever., imo.

Oh fuck. The fishy stick fad is bad enough on Bethesda's forums, please don't start that shit here as well.

hehehe, i found it quite entertaining, but as the forum wishes, i shall do, the fishysticks are no more!

One spoilsport is not the forum - people who feel the need to post complaints about the occasional, easily ignored silliness are best ignored.

Tolerance means putting up with other people, not forcing them to stop doing things you don't like. [/pet peeve]

Designating certain flammable items - in particular, wooden items, but perhaps also cloth - as a fuel substitute (even at a 1/2 or fractional increment like the smelter) would be a much better solution than wasting additional fuel to get rid of your items.

It would also allow you to farm fuel via plant fibers on maps that lack wood, coal, or magma, where you'd otherwise be forced to burn imported wood.

It wouldn't be very efficient - quite the opposite - but it would provide an alternative, and provide a reason to expand your normally tiny farming operations.

EDIT:
Also, if you could turn, say, ten units of plant fiber cloth into one of charcoal, elves suddenly become a whole lot more useful.

DF Suggestions / Re: Gunpowder, Cannons and Cannonballs
« on: July 07, 2009, 05:10:58 am »
I think guns can be added(eventually) via mod for those that really want them, but something like explosive charges is more appropriate, can be used in very dwarfy ways, and might not be so easy to mod in(you could also ignore it if you want to, without mods, as invaders prolly won't be attacking you with such things).

Urist Mcdorf: Keep the booze away from the magma!
Urist Mcdwarf: Screw the booze, keep the gunpowder away from the magma!

Pfft! No, save the booze - gun powder only explodes if it's confined, otherwise it just burns.

...and if it is confined(say, in kegs), the blast and resulting cave-in might just stop the magma flood that fool Urist McCheeseMakerMiner#47 caused! Or atleast drop it into the Noble Quarters and buy the masons more time!

Hollow cannon-balls with gunpowder inside is what's know as a mortar, and a working one wouldn't be invented 'til after the cut off date.

That's a shell, actually.

Wiki sez the first explosive shells used in Europe were fired from mortars(which is actually a type of artillery gun), however.

And personally, about the most advanced I'd like to see explosive use in DF become(if it must be implemented) is demolition charges, for mining or traps.

Although you could maybe implement your own cannon by constructing a short hall(iron block walls/floors, maybe?), open at one end, with a demo charge at the closed end and a pile of rocks/narrow iron armour/whatever next to it, the opening facing an enemy's only approach, and the charge linked to a pressure plate or switch. Or something like that, depending on how things work out.

Maybe fireworks, too, for trade, happy thoughts, and setting things on fire.

DF Suggestions / Re: Water barrels?
« on: July 06, 2009, 03:05:17 am »
Keep in mind that your desert fortress might exist for strategic reasons as well, as a safe stopover point for soldiers en route to raid the goblins, a point fortress against goblin raids in turn, et cetera. That could easily be reason enough to send regular water caravans.

Also as a stopover for desert caravans themselves. If they're passing by to trade heavy goods for light, they can haul water on the leg of their journey that they're only hauling light goods, make a profit off their extra capacity by selling it at a premium, and pad their own water supplies against the unexpected.

And remember, a good fortress can buy out any caravan - if you can import a few tons of flux for your steelworks, why can't you import a few tons of water, if you're willing to pay for it?

Weight is weight, afterall.

The thing is that you'd have to shell out a LOT of money for it to be worthwhile at all to the caravan. Like someone else mentioned, the caravan has to make money based on the distance traveled (and difficulty of doing it), not just a profit based on the value of the goods sold. A caravan trekking across the desert to give you water is going to expect a lot in return even if the water isn't worth much.

A barrel of water shouldn't cost more than a barrel of very cheap booze - in terms of shipping, they're functionally the same.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: HFS ore without the HFS? (Spoilers)
« on: July 04, 2009, 06:08:49 pm »
will goblins elves and humans gain access to adamantine weaponry as a result of this modding?

If you remove the [deep] tag? I think gobbos and hunams might get steel instead of iron, iirc, as they use the second-best non-deep metal.

But I don't mod, so don't quote me on that.

Also: as wounded dwarves need water, and water freezes in winter, wouldn't it make sense to store some for your wounded?

That's half the point of inside or underground cisterns. Water that's inside won't freeze or evaporate due to temperature(1/7 evaporation not included, of course)

DF Suggestions / Re: Hungry animals
« on: July 04, 2009, 05:05:09 pm »
Most [Tame] animals also shouldn't attack dwarves, even when starving to death("...so...many...wardogs..."), and you'd maybe want to add some way to better control the cat population('neuter tame animal' job?  ...hehe, 'neuter goblin thief' :D ).

Chained and penned animals can be fed via meat stockpile, I suppose.

How many waterwheels can be powered by one pump?

Seriously. Moving water will power as many waterwheels as you can cram into it.

I've built perpetual motion machines in aquifer pools - just needed one dwarf to start the pump, after which the waterwheels powered the pump which moved the water which powered the waterwheels which powered the pump...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Quantum Stockpiles? How to?
« on: June 25, 2009, 11:39:46 am »
My plan is to have it set up as such. Dwarves dump it down channel. It falls onto a spot that has a Stone Stockpile on it. This is directly behind a Mason's workshop. I'll only dump decent rock.

Microline and shit like that is taking a long dump off my short magma Pier.

Manual Stone Selection - Best. Mod. Ever.

Makes all stone economic so you can enable or disable any given type of stone for general use.

Enjoy.

It says it is on some wiki page or something.

Probably got it mixed up with dumping stuff into pits/magam/etc.

Precisely.  Say, Wolfius, is that a photoshopped image, or did the Pope seriously pose like that?

I'm given to understand that the photo is, in fact, unaltered.

i find your lack of faith in Wolfus disturbing.

I find the lack of comment on my avatar disturbing(right click -> view image for full version).  >:(

Made it myself, I did.
