The one problem with this theory: the mafia usually actually kills you, the elves usually just try, fail miserably, and supply you with useless crap they were wearing.  Amusing mental image though :D

Well, I never be sayin' they be a very compotent mafia, yarr?

I still want to know where this guy got his numbers.  I find it a little hard to believe that a legendary artifact would be no better than stuff that some untrained shmuck can churn out at the local forge, regardless of material.  So I want to see just where this info came from with my own eyes.

It's not plain steel, it's ☼Masterwork Steel☼ that can apparently rival artifacts made of Mookish 0.5-modifier materials. And even then, it would be a slim advantage, assuming a 5x quality modifier for artifacts is correct.

I theorise that the Elves are, in fact, the Lumberjack Mafia - ethics is just a facade, a pretext to excuse their actions, confuse outsiders, and sucker the gullible.

Think about it - they sell you wood, won't buy any(or the products thereof) from you, and will kill you if you move in on their turf by harvesting your own.

Still, steel most likely wins.

Also, note that there's another multiplier that applies for body ware amours, so that, say, a pants is worse than a greaves by default, before you even get to choosing materials. So, apart from shields, artifact leather Armour won't be too good.

Tho with how artifacts go, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dwarves could make artifact leather platemail.  ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Need help filling a moat
« on: September 16, 2008, 06:09:57 pm »
if that fails, you will need to fill an intermediate resevoir with water (moats don't need to be thick!)
something with a low surface area is easier to fill

Aye - I generally dig part of my moat, open it to the water/magma, allow it to fill, then continue digging incrementally.

With magma, you can also use meltable floodgates/mechanisms to section a moat off, fill each segment, then open the gates to fill the next, allowing the magma to then destroy the open gate construction and slowly melt the components. It's a fair bit more work, but it allows you to get a trench defence up without delay and still fill it later. Also if you have to drain ponds that intersect your moat first and need the space to evaporate the water.

You can do it with water, too, but then it's not self-cleaning, so you're left with invisible(if left open) floodgates.

That's like the community deciding that the incredible hulk is orange and female.

I invented him as a male. Thus, he is a male.

For you, maybe. However, these things happen by generally incidental coincidence and happenstance.

You must be new to the internet - trying to force a meme is generally lame and doomed to fail.

  ;)

Also, I'd have to say the only "stereotypical female dwarf" thusfar is Mother Militant, charging into battle with a babe in each arm and string of children in tow.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: So... Wells...
« on: September 12, 2008, 02:55:31 pm »
i was a tad annoyed cos when i was building a well from a brook i thought to make it fun id dig a shaft to the bottom z-level from the brook then dig a shaft up to my fortress at the same level as the brook and put the wells on top of that. For some reason the water only went up to the z-level below the brook so i couldnt build wells there - i had to just dig a tunnel from the brook to the well to get the water to the right well.

Odd.

However, empty space between the well and the water doesn't matter, iirc. There could be ten z-levels of empty pit, but so long as the well had water below it it should work.

Barrels? PAH! Real dwarves swim in booze and just soak it up through their skin and genitalia.

what.

Your regularly scheduled flight through the intertubes has been unavoidably diverted to Too Much Information Land for a brief stop-over.

According to all I know they will survive and feel well like a fish in the water ;D

Don't forget to hook the cage up to a lever, so you can let them out of the Cage-Hyperspace Pocket to drown if you get tired of them. Just make sure it's secure enough they can't get out or shoot anyone befor they die.

Spider Bear; If you dodge the webs, the first thing it does once you get to melee range is administer a paralysing bite, then smack your head off. Maybe venom-up the claws, too.

And if your dwarves survive, and who were bitten will periodicly drop unconscious from the venom's lingering effects.

Now, give it wings, and a scorpion tail so it can strike you from a full tile away. Chitin natural armour under the insulating fur...

And an oral ovipositer, so when your wounded War Hero's go to sleep, there's a chance of Chest-Buster fun!  ;D

Maybe allow the cubs to spit flaming web, too.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I deal with a flooded fortress?
« on: September 12, 2008, 01:09:40 pm »
If you're not in a hot climate, then water deeper than 1/7 will never evaporate. However, in hot climates, water may evaporate at any depth when it's exposed to the outside. Indoor water is still safe from evaporation, so you should make it a priority to dig some cisterns on such maps before the water all vanishes.

Aye; high temperature will cause evaporation(awesome physics action!!), but underground temperature is generally fixed, so it's not a concern; hence the cisterns.

Water reduced to 1/7 will evaporate, gradually, no matter where it is. Same with magma. Water that is mostly 2/7 with some 1/7 should eventually evaporate, I've heard, but it'll take a long time.

If water is vanishing from ponds and neither those causes are to blame, dwarves either drinking it(ie, no booze), or bringing it via bucket to wounded and thirsty injured dwarves stuck in bed resting.

A tile 2/7 or deeper will never evaporate in and of itself.

The image this brings to my mind is perhaps a little too disturbing and I'm wondering if others have felt the same and if maybe this should be toned down.

Never!

If your dwarves' suffering is causing a sympathetic emotional response in you, that's a sign of a great game.

Seriously, think about it; this video game has given you an empathetic emotional motivation to play differently, because of the suffering of a fictional, randomly-generated mook.

That, my friend, is amazing.
