DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Central stairway???
« on: December 01, 2007, 02:11:00 pm »
I've been working fine with a row of three strairs linking levels.

However, I off-set each level's stairs, as dwarves can reportedly fall down them, and will plummet all the way to the bottom. As you can imagine, a legendary armourer falling 10 floors is rather painful, for both the player and dwarf.

That murky pools don't refill when it rains/in the "wet season" is rather an unimplimented feature, and water.exe compensating for it's absence.

You can't honestly tell me that the ponds on my map were supposed to evaporate in the first year and never refill.

Now, sure, if you use it as an unlimited source of water, that's cheating. Running it once every spring, of even just so you can fill an underground cistern and never use it again? Not so much.

It almost sounds like he didn't place his selection area over a brook tile in the local map, and just assumed it'd be there because the biome said there was a brook. :?:

Were they sneaking, or did you just overlook them? 'cause if it's the second you can always use the unit list to find hostiles.

Aye - if the gobbo's aren't up to the task, pissing off the apes or elves should do it.

Might take a while, tho, depending on how profitable past trade relations have been for them.

I too would like to know this - be a shame if the ballista towers I've spent the last few game years building went to waste, but not so bad as delaying the discovery until I need those defences.

Next time you might try deconstructing a magma forge to recover the anvil, lest the caravan not come to your timely aid.

Eh, it's not that far - some of mine have been almost as long. Remember, magma flow time is only a one-time cost, unlike hauling and the ilk, and you can do something else while you wait.

The path is, however, longer than it has to be - by only running it up as far as you had to, you would have made it almost 20% shorter.

I don't think pathing has anything to do with it - they're just teleported around.

Has anyone tested the lead/gold/etc. bins?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Artifacts...worth the cost?
« on: March 26, 2008, 03:07:00 pm »
I like the flavor, and as mentioned, the legendaries are nice. And the last fort's first artifact was a four-figure table that made for a nice early-game legendary dining room.

And they don't take too-too-long to train, either.

Problem is destroying their masterful engravings will send them berserk, and mining out a tile next to one can sometimes have the same effect(or atleast it used to), so you'll want to plan ahead befor you let high-level engravers get to work.

Actually, I thought I was flux-less until stumbling across a large deposit ten levels down in my current fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Booze barrels?
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:15:00 pm »
I've notices that sometimes a stockpile won't take items unrelated to it's original category - say, you zone a finished goods stockpile and then set it to take seeds and only seeds.

I recently goofed my booze stockpile - I think I had wood or something selected when I zoned it - and it wouldn't take booze even after I used Q to properly adjust it's settings. I had to erase it and rezone a new booze stockpile in it's place.

« on: March 25, 2008, 09:09:00 pm »
I've found a squiggly path keeps them out, even if you're near the vent, but always bring bauxite and carve a grate or two. I always work underground, however.

Bigger problem is when they come to the surface and start wandering around harassing your dwarves - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. A ditch or wall will contain them, however, if you don't want to risk casualties, especially if it's early game or there are alot of them.

You could use rewalling/floors to build a giant statue.
