General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: June 23, 2016, 09:25:23 am »
I mean at the heart of everything, every community mentioned is dumb, every point mentioned is dumb, this conversation is dumb, but the difference is that you dwell on it, whereas I just pop a can of Coca-Cola and listen to Roundabout by Yes while I wander the forums.

That's funny, because to me it looked just like you started a pages long argument over it. Maybe that's just what a can opening sounds like where you're from.
So what's the point of this post besides deliberately attempting to start another argument?
Sometimes a tone of sarcasm comes from others seeing a situation that could be resolved if arguing stopped with conceding and working with each other. It's generally not intended, but an afterthought from...what is seen.
I'm not understanding your point here. I'd be surprised if anyone could interpret that post and tone in any way other than being snarky for the sake of starting something with me, because that's what I see it as.
Also adhering to the "nobody enters an argument to change their point of view" point too!

I think they were saying you are a hypocrite, since you did continue a rather pointless argument for several pages while supposedly not really caring about it.

Would've been nice for you to do that before the day ended. As it is, you're 8 1/2 hours late...

Well it's more the person behind the opinion. It's morning time and I can't articulate.

Re: flame warrior classes: is silly. Pigeon-holing people based on the type of arguments they make is very dismissive, as though you're saying you are [x, y or z] so your words don't matter. It makes y'all look foolish, like you're trying to win an argument by making the other person look stupid than by refuting what they say.
1 - It's the WTF thread.
2 - I don't treat online discussions seriously most of the time anyway and would rather have fun with people rather than refute/debunk them. Plus opinions tend to be highly subjective and their owners protective of them to the point of not changing them no matter how convincing the arguments you might come up with are.

Refute was the wrong word to use for what I meant. Challenge would've been better. Ah well...

I'm not sure many people think it's fun to be treated like they're not worth the effort to say "I disagree with you" rather than post an image of what you think they are based on arbitrary criteria that you didn't even come up with.

As I'm sure you've noticed, sometimes the WTF thread - like the other emotion threads - does spontaneously erupt into genuine discussions of things.

I am taking this too seriously though. Basically my argument being "other folk have opinions, try to respect 'em even if they're nonsense, bro"

General Discussion / Re: Minimal wage - should it exist?
« on: June 22, 2016, 09:51:05 am »
Arg 4: Specious; personal value judgement. Have you ever worked as a janitor? It's quite a bit of physical labor and near-constant exposure to harsh chemicals. In a more general sense, tying back into Arg 2, any job that is valued at below a living wage is admitting its own irrelevance. If a business needs a job done, then it needs to be able to support the worker doing said job. Business can't do this, business fail.

As an addendum, this could be extended to other jobs which have no great value to society. What of those in the financial, insurance and entertainment industries, among the highest paid in the US? Do they deserve to be paid the quite frankly ridiculous amount of money they get paid for moving numbers around, profiting on fear and providing entertainment?

Despite the hypocrisy that exudes from my use of the next argument, who are we to judge someone's worth to society? Any individual has the potential to go to school and learn to do something useful, but they need to pay for it (at least in the US) which is quite difficult to do if you get paid nothing.

I'm going to make an argument against minimum wage.

Argument 1: Minimum wage laws reduce the number of jobs in existence.
Proof:
1. Deadweight loss. It's a microeconomics term for the loss in mutually beneficial transactions produced by a price floor or price ceiling, or some other laws.
2. Minimum wage is a price ceiling on the price of labor.
3. Hence: several mutually beneficial transactions go unexploited as a result of the minimum wage law.
4. In this case, a transaction is a worker working for a company/supplier/whatnot.

In the short-term, perhaps.

Consider all the people on minimum wage now have disposable income, though. What do you think that's going to be doing for the local economy? These people have needs to be sated (places to live, goods for sustenance and a little bit of entertainment) and they're going to be using that income to pay for them. This will help the economy grow, providing more jobs in the long-run.

Re: pedestrian lights: I know of one set that makes the lights change immediately upon pressing the button, but those lights were specifically out in to make it safer to cross the road for pedestrians so... great example.

Re: cyclists: of the two times I've almost been hit by a road vehicle, they were cyclists. One of them for some inexplicably stupid arsehole reason was wearing a black jacket and trousers at 11.30 at night so I couldn't see them until they were in the glow of a streetlight, and the other came speedin' round the corner onto the road I was walking on, also at night. This guy was nice enough to be wearing high-vis stuff though, but still almost hit meh when I was crossing.

I've also seen more cyclists break traffic laws than cars, bizarrely. Don't mind so much when they get off their bike at traffic lights and walk through, but some don't even have the sense to do that.

Cocking phone.

Right. Bugger typing that all over again. I would appreciate Starver acting on me on N1, if he'd be so kind.

TBF, TDS and Moonlit all brought up nonsense about confirming a blocker, and since TDS has claimed that role and that it only works when someone acts upon him, I find it hard to believe Moonlit can know about it when he says he acted on Starver

Also, unvote 'cause my analysis is shite.

So I am a little confused, having to make a few assumptions. I'm thinking BiggerFish is most likely scum at this point, based on these.

Do you know what TBF did to you when he visited you, DarkStar?
