General Discussion / Re: what tv shows are you currently watching?
« on: April 05, 2022, 10:47:12 pm »
Finished watching Elementary and it was highly entertaining.

It does do the fairly typical American thing of having far too many episodes to fit the story they tell, but even the stand-alone cases were oftentimes compelling enough to keep me interested and unable to predict who was doing what and why.

If you have a smart phone, probably listening to you through that.

I visited Kentucky last year, without searching for it on the interwebs but discussing it with the people I was going with.

Many Kentucky tourism ads followed.

I asked what would be self-correcting about the collapse of the financial industry, probably the world over, because millions of people facing financial uncertainty through no fault of their own doesn’t seem particularly corrective to me, not what was self-corrective when governments around the world bailed out their financial institutions.

Insurance is all well and good, but what about pensions? How do people get paid, or pay for their stuff, when their bank doesn’t exist anymore to process those payments? What happens to the stock market when the brokerages collapse? What happens to mortgages and business loans? Credit cards? Corporate accounts? Government accounts? The insurance industry?

Shaq retired from basketball in ‘91 ‘cause of AIDS-related issues. no he didn’t the internet lied to me!

Capitalism can’t self-correct btw. Remember the the financial crisis in ‘08, and how the banks were all like “lol, too big to fail” and asked for fuck tons of government money? What was self-correcting about that?
...that was socialism.
Capitalism would have been to let the banks fail.
Thank you for proving my point.

What point was that exactly? That the better system, capitalism, would have allowed the banks to fail, meaning that - unless you have a mattress full of money somewhere - you effectively lose the ability to function in society: you can’t get paid unless it’s cash in hand, you can’t pay for anything unless it’s cash in hand.

This would have happened in at least every major nation in the world. Catastrophic global depression, at minimum.

So, to amend my question, what has been self-corrected in this specific example?

The Ukraine war thread was locked for a reason, so probably not a good idea to establish other threads in its wake for the time being.

I saw the Death of Stalin the other day. I couldn't recommend it more, it was very fun.

Jason Isaacs is very funny.

Absolutely failed to read anything last year.

I might read Dune this year, I might not. LotR would be after that if I manage it.

There's also the unavoidable problem that people are very good at sharing thier suffering, and right now the karma train isn't greased yet. People also like to spread thier joy, but more sporadically.

Selflessness tends to be looked upon with suspicion. The selfless are obviously up to something if they don’t overtly benefit from their actions.

Bill Gates is apparently injecting mine-control chips into everyone in the world through vaccine initiatives, for example.

But then regular people are the ones being punished for the financial sectors evils. Heck, how many decision-makers at the businesses get punished?

The better response would’ve been to make the bailout contingent on the banks being broken up and the original executives being ousted from their positions sans severance packages.

A Twitter user was sentenced to the worst punishment of all time over an offensive tweet, he was sentenced to 150 hours of going outside, will he survive touching grass and seeing sunlight?

How often are British MPs prosecuted under that law?

British MPs tend not to post things like that.

They prefer to hold parties instead.

I feel like this belongs here, since Amazon is so tightly would around our economy and political lobbying engine. Amazon apparently had a doc leak showing its plans to ban specific words and phrases internally to it's employees. Here's a list!

This sounds like a joke from a dystopian scifi starring Sylvester Stallone, but it is not. Naturally no major news outlet is covering it at present.

Their official response is "lol we weren't really going to".

Good thing their employees are Unionizing the crap out of them.

One warehouse, out of more than a hundred, unionizing does not a movement make.

You asserted that capitalism was self-correcting, and that the two other economic systems you brought up were not, and thus capitalism was superior (perhaps an inference on my part I’m too lazy to go back and check).

I presented a real-life situation in which capitalism appeared to have not self-corrected (the ‘08 financial crisis) requiring a response from government (government bailouts the world over). You said the real-life solution to that was in fact socialism and that the solution to the supposedly better system would have been to allow part of the economy to collapse, and that your point was proven; I asked what your point was as I was genuinely mystified as to what your point was, and then asked how allowing part of the economy to collapse was self-correcting.

How is asking questions about your position stupid? I ask them because I want to know more of your perspective, because I don’t share it. I might even stand to learn something.  That is what arguing is all about. Why are you standing in the way of my knowledge gathering bruv? :o

Indeed. Saying Russia never accomplished anything useful by itself is flat out a lie. I want the government to burn and for Putin to be slowly electrocuted to death (I'd torture him with a taser if it was up to me) but I like the country's history and culture.

Can I ask which part of Russian history do you like? Chechen Wars? Invasion in Afghanistan? The subjugation of Hungary and Czechoslovakia? Conquest of Europe in WW2 which Russia started together with Hitler? (Luckily Hitler, in his hubris, chose to betray Russian allies instead of dividing the world) Terror of 1930s? Bloodbath of  the 1917 revolution? WW1 that wouldn't happen without Russian warmongering. Numerous genocides of 19th century? So called Serfdom (actually, form of slavery)? What exactly makes you proud?

Find a country with a couple of centuries behind them that doesn’t have a similar history, man.

The CGI was from an updated version George Lucas did at some point.

One of the more controversial aspects of it was also making  the bounty hunter we meet when Han Solo enters the story - Greedo - miss shooting Solo from the other side of a small table in order to make Han seem like less of a murderer.

In the original, Han just blasts him and Greedo doesn’t get a shot off.
