General Discussion / Re: Maybe the WWIII thread (soon) (Ukraine)

Do you think Xi will offer up Chinese bodies for Putin’s failing vanity project?

What's the most convincing combination of Monkey and Sheep?

What on earth prompted you to consider this question?

Finally was able to write my brother over whatsapp. Besides as permanent hicup he seems to be fine now. Well, under recovery for the interventions but fine, as fine he can be.
That's about the best you can wish for, glad you can be relieved

Step Six: Throw oneself at the climbing wall, overcoming all challenges.

((I've noticed significant improvements in my climbing!))
Ehhh.... You're supposed to go up the wall, not trebuchet yourself at it with your huge forearms!

Maybe trebuchets are to Dwarfy what spinach is to Popeye.

I mean… it doesn’t help that the cops in the spotlight tend to be shit at the job, aye?

George Floyd being a good example. There were four of them dealing with one guy, admittedly huge and in a state of distress, but all it would have taken is one of the three not-Chauvin officers to go “hey, maybe there’s a better way of dealing with this?” instead of being wary of the crowd that had gathered because they were in the process of killing a guy.

There’s a difference between blatant hate and a reasonable expectation that they not do things like that.

As a Scotsman, it is my duty to inform you that you can fry anything.

Fried pizza is a common one around here, though I've never tried it.

Tried a deep fried Mars bar once.

It was… not very pleasant.

I’m sure there’s a chippy somewhere that will allow you to bring in something and they’ll deep fry it for you.

As an aside, Boris Johnson compared the plight of the Ukrainians fighting against an authoritarian regime trying to stop them from getting closer to Europe to Britain voting for Brexit.

Far be it from him to take the get out of jail free card that is a hugely distracting global crisis and instead try to use said crisis to remind people he is a complete and utter tit.

I get what you’re saying, but that time saving adds up.

When I still cared about it I used to stay at work an extra 7 minutes in order to get a bonus at the end of the year for having worked a certain number of hours. It basically worked out as an extra hour a week (the earliest I could punch in was 5 minutes prior to my scheduled start time, so 12 minutes per day * 5 days per week = 60 minutes) which meant I could also take extra time off later in the year if I happened to work beyond that 7 minutes, which I frequently did, though that tended to amount to taking my time cleaning up and then going for a pee as the bathrooms were conveniently far away from the punch clock.

As it pertains to using extra gas though, maybe not worth the extra pennies that get spent, but to each their own I guess *shrug*

I can fool my brain into thinking my teeth are at very extreme angles relative to the teeth next to them by curling my tongue up near them.

I came for the dwarves and stayed for the humans I met along the way.

Was surprisingly touched by this

You should report it.

I would hardly call two neighbouring countries engaging in… well, one of them murdering civilians sheltering in theaters and the other defending their homeland from that, WWIII. Providing material support is not the same as being an active participant in the war.

Can you call it state sponsored terrorism when it’s the state actually doing the terrorism?

Also I don’t think Putin was head of the KGB, just an agent, as per a 30 second Google so pinch of salt required.

3222
I didn't want to say anything Dwarfy, because I don't want to be judgmental or discriminatory against your, eh, "hobby", but can you, like, keep it down? I'm certain that the neighbors can hear, and you're interrupting my DF playing.

Okay this worries me because I did start practicing the keyboard recently  :o

Edit/Random observation: If you're being discriminatory based on that, are you then a pianist?

Excuse me you little sh-

Oh, pianist.

*nervous chuckle*

I think that kind of thing is normal. There’s probably a name for it but I can’t be bothered looking.

They’ve asked for military support (weapons, presumably) and economic support.

From a BBC report on one of those live pages:

Quote
Asked about media reports that Russia was asking China for military help, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington says Beijing is focused on keeping the war in Ukraine from "getting out of control".

Reuters quoted embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu as saying that "the situation in Ukraine is indeed disconcerting".

"The high priority now is to prevent the tense situation escalating or even getting out of control," he said.

Earlier on Sunday, the Financial Times and a number of other media outlets reported that US officials believe Russia has requested Chinese military supplies to help with the war effort, as well as economic support.

When asked about the reports, the spokesperson said that he "never heard of that".

US officials have warned that China would face consequences if it takes steps to help Russia evade sanctions.

China has so far publicly remained neutral in the conflict and refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
